- The Lion King is a platformer video game based on Disney's popular animated film of the same name. The title was developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Interactive for the Super NES and Genesis in 1994, and was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, PC, Amiga, Master System, and Game Gear. The NES, Master System and Amiga versions were only released in the PAL region, with the NES version in particular being the last game released for the platform in the region. The game follows Simba's journey from a young care-free cub to the battle with his evil uncle Scar as an adult.
The Lion King is a side-scrolling platform game in which players control the protagonist, Simba, through the events of the film, going through both child and adult forms as the game progresses. In the first half of the game, players control Simba as a child, who primarily defeats enemies by jumping on them. Simba also has the ability to roar, using up a replenishable meter, which can be used to stun enemies, make them vulnerable, or solve puzzles. In the second half of the game, Simba becomes an adult and gains access to various combat moves such as scratching, mauling, and throws. In either form, Simba will lose a life if he runs out of health or encounters an instant-death obstacle, such as a bottomless pit or a rolling boulder.
Throughout the game, the player can collect various types of bugs to help them through the game. Some bugs restore Simba's health and roar meters, other more rare bugs can increase these meters for the remainder of the game, while black spiders will cause Simba to lose health. By finding certain bugs hidden in certain levels, the player can participate in bonus levels in which they play as either Timon or Pumbaa to earn extra lives and continues. Pumbaa's stages have him collecting falling bugs and items until either one hits the bottom of the screen or he eats a bad bug, while Timon's stages have him hunting for bugs within a time limit while avoiding spiders.
The sprites and backgrounds were drawn by Disney animators themselves at Walt Disney Feature Animation, and the music was adapted from songs and orchestrations in the soundtrack. In a "Devs Play" session with Double Fine, game designer Louis Castle revealed that two of the game's levels, Hakuna Matata and Be Prepared, were adapted from scenes that were scrapped from the final movie.
The Amiga 1200 version of the game was developed in 2 months from scratch in Assembly language by Dave Semmons, who was willing to take on the conversion if he received the Genesis source code. He assumed the game to be programmed in 68000 assembly, since the Amiga and Genesis shared the same CPU family, but turned out to be written in C, a language he was unfamiliar with.

It turns out that the goal of the double jumps is for THE OSTRICH to clear the lower nest and the second jump is for Simba to clear the 2nd one. Took me years to realize that it was registering the Ostrich getting hit as well as Simba

Ah, so this is what the other 99% of the game looks like.
On CRT monitors the pixels weren't so visible, they smoothed them out. And these games were made with that in mind.

I play this as 7 years old and was able complete this game. So why not we are "old gaming generation" we love when games was hard (lion king isnt hard)

@@GodFormHermet Not in middle Europe, it ´s not so hard for us. :) Just joke, I complete this game remember fight with Scar i still hit him and nothing happen than was able to throw him so my suggestion was throw him from cliff and end game.. this game is easy. I always play game hard for finish so nothing special. I remember other games like a scorch, dyna blaster ou so much memories.
7 year old me rented this and somehow made it to the end where you fight scar and I could not figure out how to beat him. same thing happened to me with Aladdin.

PC graphics have improved so much that while this looks poor by today's standards, it was quite impressive back then. Likely it boils down to the fact that you didn't expect such high quality (for that time) graphics from a pc game. Also I believe that many old school graphics look a bit odd on todays large flat screen monitors. When I first saw this game it was on a 15" crt monitor. Now I have a 24" flat screen. :-) Just that alone makes a difference when looking at this game.

I played this in the year 2000 on our win 98 pc, this was when I was 4 with my dad...getting a blast of nostalgia here. We never beat the game so rewatching this makes me feel complete. 😝

I remember playing this game over 20 years ago. I couldn't get past the 2nd part of the 2nd level where the ostrich ride doesn't tell you to jump, double jump, or duck. I guess a kid's memory and reaction time is just too limited.
I never really had those issues. My hardest issue was reaching the end of the level by roaring at the right monkeys and set them up so they help you reach the end. Although I had to say I still find it hard to time the double jump right sometimes.

How can you have the slightest difficulty on the second level? I mean I could get it done as a child within minutes. Blimey, that is why I exclude myself from the millennials.
British Tutor I was 5 or 6 years old at the time, and not really a motivated gamer. I’m sure the more avid gamer of that age group had no problem with it! Luckily my older bro helped me past these parts so we both had our fun!
My 4 year old self could never make that log waterfall. This feels like some sort of closure to see what the rest of the game is like.

But I will say early 00's did have some gems but there will never be shows like King of the Hill, South Park, Family Guy, The Simpsons, Gargoyles, Batman TAS, Spiderman TAS or X-Men TAS all of those were great.

You clearly have some skills here, I remember playing the Stampede and Elephant Graveyard with sweaty hands as a kid because it was so bloody difficult! I think I finished the game once and literally went outside and started dancing in the garden...
I kept replaying the whole game over and over again. This was my favourite game in my childhood. I know all the musics too!

That intro reminds me of those days when you already get excited after starting the game in the DOS prompt and realize the game is running properly. Good memories.

I remember playing this on my then PC, for exactly two sittings. One alone and one with a friend of mine. Total play time about an hour, perhaps. I still want that hour back. Beautiful game, gorgeous music, level design from hell.

This is probably the first game I ever played on our Win 98 PC and I remember clearing level 2 fairly easily but seeing Elephant Graveyard, Stampede and Simba's Exile still makes my hands sweat after over 20 years. I was so bad at jumping in this game, level 5 and 6 were a nightmare to me, I quit the game so many times in the log jumping in Hakuna Matata. I cleared the game once and never touched it again. What a nostalgia blast, still love the graphics!

Thanks for posting this. My older brother showed me how to play this when we were kids (or at least, showed me how to get to the elephant graveyard and neither of us could get any further.) He died last year and it's one of very few childhood memories I still have - I'd forgotten all about it til I watched this. The "It starts" really threw me back.

I had this game on the first Nintendo gameboy… NO color, just black and white. I remember a couple of levels a little differently but overall it’s identical.

If you want you can check the Game Gear version on my channel which I uploaded last week, which is a bit different too.
For those unaware, this version is toned down in difficulty and is closer to what the devs originally wanted to release on the SNES. The osterich is slower, the monkeys easier I believe, better log spread and timing in the waterfall, etc.
There's a good interview with the producer here on YT explaining why that one was so difficult. Long story short, it was to push sales so kids couldn't beat it when just renting.

@Bold One It was a terrible practice that IMO ruined a lot of games back then.
Ecco the Dolphin was the best example of the strategy gone wrong. The first game sold decent because it was pushed so hard in ads, but the sales for the second game dropped sharply. The original was so ridiculous it killed any interest in a franchise.

My dad had gotten me this game on our Pentium 4 back in early 2000s.I was just 6 years old. I used to get like 1 hr to play this game daily. I remember I had played this game right after my school and my mom was always furious that I had not even changed my uniform. Aaaaaa it gave me nostalgia when I had finished this off. the goosebumps when the simba grows older in later stages of game and maaynnn the sound tracks of this game brings old good times back.
Re-uniting with this again after all this year is really cool.

I just bought the game and I cannot pass the ostrich part (I'm an adult! Lol) I double jump but the ostrich gets stuck behind so I land on the floor and die. Anyone that can help me move past that level? I used to pass the whole game so easily, I can't believe I'm stuck there!

I wasn’t expecting to be one of the small number of commenters who beat this game as a child without cheats. Played on SNES and Genesis. Believe me, I know it’s disgustingly difficult but if you put the time in it’s doable.
