    As the original owner of a 2002 DL1000 S/N 00142, I appreciate all the advances that have been made on the model. I bought that bike when I was 50, and here I am 70 years old. Where did all that time go? IMHO, that it has come so far is a testament to the decision of my original purchase. Everyone knows that the stonkin' 1000cc v-twin adapted from the TL1000 (RIP) is addicting and I couldn't wait to get on board. First farkle was a Givi windscreen, much better than the original. Second farkle was engine guards and a set of highway peg mounts from Happy Trails. Next was the Givi top box. I've had two valve checks in my 105km and counting and just one shim was replaced. Not because it needed it, but because it was getting close to tolerance. That's a valve train we can all appreciate. I'm one of those rare guys who found the original saddle pretty comfortable and I'm on my second saddle cover now as the original was wearing pretty thin. I know that the DL1000 has been transformed through technology twenty years later, but for some reason I enjoy the simplicity of the one I own. I do know this through experience; from single track to interstate, to intercontinental, my 1000 has never let me down and always kept me comfortable. Best bike purchase decision ever, hands down.

      I'm glad that you're into the good DL 1000. It's a beast out there, and has a certain cool vibe. I wish it had ABS and traction control as then it would be fully relevant today for many riders. This is what I was missing in it when I was owning a V-Strom 1000 myself. If not for those reasons, I might even keep it till today too.

    You need to learn how to ride in the city at slow speed.. Its not the bike its you.. I've ridden a bmw gs1200 and a gs 1250 and they are not better at slow speed than the v-strom, in fact the v-strom is much better in traffic than the gs because they are narrower,i had a 650 v strom and the 1000xt that i have now feels as confortable ridding in the city as the 650, and if you like you can even see a vídeo i made ridding some gnarly single tracks very slow without a problem in the 1000xt

      If it was me and not the bike, I'd feel and say the same thing about every bike. And I don't, so the conclusion seems to be different. The handlebar is not the case for me when it comes to judging the bike's behavior at low speeds. I used to ride in those circumstances almost daily in the past and that's why it's important to me. I’ve owned this bike a few months and done some thousand kms. I disagree with the lack of stability at low speeds. It is a stable and balanced bike, however you cannot go around the fact that it weighs 250 kg. One needs to get used to this. The engine likes it above 3000 revs. Below it vibrates. Mine doesn’t have that awkward wire on the right hand side. It must be an after market thing. This is a really great bike and that’s why I bought it. I feel that some tend to compare it with the big GS and they are different leagues.

      I think that the wire is simply a heated grip on that side. Now, there are other bikes in this class that are even heavier, and they simply do better at lower speeds. It's not bad but it's been here from the beginning of the first V-Strom. I do compare this area to the big GS as it's a benchmark here. But Ducati is not far behind and in fact the 2015 Multistrada 1200 already was great in terms of low speed riding precision and balancing. This proved to me that it's not only because of BMW's boxer hanging so low but it's the whole suspension setup, angles and how things work together. If we were to compare the V-Strom 1050 to the newest Honda Africa Twin 1100 which I just gave back, then yeah, V-Strom kicks its ass anytime and is so much better at low speeds. I think it's also slightly better than the Harley Pan America here. Still, I know Suzuki can do better and I keep my fingers crossed that they will. Cheers!

    Good fluid review, but I think you were too hard on the Vstrom.
    The looks is subjective, I kinda like it and the color scheme is pretty cool too.
    The positive:
    1. Value for money
    2. Enough tech that its easy to use ( not like the Africa Twin with lots of buttoms or so many features like the Ducati).
    3. Great smooth and reliable engine.
    4.Low manintenance.
    5. Cruise control ( at least in the XT, finally!!)
    The negative:
    1. The LCD is way to simple, it could have been better, an analogue hybrid like the Hayabusa or a TFT.
    2. No quick shifter.
    3. No ABS switch
    4. The weight could be lower.
    For me its a 8 out of 10, not as fancy like the other brands but reliable and complete.
    By the way the suspension feels good to me too.
    Hopefully they can put another dash anda quick shifter.
    Take care.

      Thanks a lot for the input. I do agree with all the points that you mentioned. Not sure about the weight as it may not be too heavy I think. At least it doesn't feel very, very heavy like Africa Twin or Harley-Davidson Pan America Special within this category. Also, not as easy to handle as R1250GS or Multistrada 1260 or V4. As for reliability, then it of course depends. I've heard some hard-to-believe stories about the newest 1050 that were quite critical but perhaps it's too early to judge that part. V-Strom has a special place in my heart forever.

My last bike was an Africa Twin and I never got used to the 21 inch front wheel and long travel suspension and it really dove when braking. The Vstrom is much better for what I do. Thanks for your review. I certainly agree with your comments on the engine. I don't mind its weight as I use it only for long highway rides. It feels solid even with luggage. I am 184 cm and raised the seat height as it felt too low. For one person it is long enough but for two-up riding it may need to be just a little longer. Overall I think the bike is an excellent alternative to the GS and in Australia much cheaper. An excellent choice for touring; love the bike.

    As I found when I bought my 2014 Vee new, I had to adjust the front suspension which made it perfect for me-no more diving during braking. I use mine a lot off road so switched out the front sprocket easily with a 14T replacing the 17T stock. It does not effect toad quality much at all, just a bit more rev but acceptable. For road trips I can switch it back in 15 minutes. I love the low torque the ‘14 series have that they changed in the newer models BUT like all the standard accessories that comes with the new ones. Mine is also the adv model with some stuff on it but not as much as the new. The new still seems like a solid bike and I am sure a great tourer. Mine will run anywhere I want it to as you ride them like a tank. They are not subtle, you power through stuff. Anyway, a great review my friend and as all Vstroms are so adaptable to your preferences very economically. The ride by wire is nice, the spoked wheels (yet my cast have banged a lot of rocks out of their way w/o even a Knick riding year round. I have ridden bikes for over 50 years on road and way back into nowhere Ian’s I can say I chose a Vee because it will start, run, take you anywhere you want to go and bring you home. Super reliable and easy maintenance. I ride with a good mix of AFs, GS, Tigers, etc and we all go out and come home at ghe same time. Riding skill makes a big difference in that. Some are better at certain things but a Vee will always get you there and back. I had the 650 also and they are amazing also. I got the Vee as my forever bike, now in my 60s, to go back to more road once my body can not handle the back woods but that may be a while. With just a bit of figment, adjustment and a couple economical add ons these bikes will give you many years and even many more maintenance free miles. There are great support groups on line for any questions you may ever have and tried and reuse accessories to use. Again, a really great honest review here you don’t see every day. Keep up this good work!!

Since the beginning it was successful and without major issues. Suzuki did a really good job with the concept and made those bikes a good proposition for their price. Versys 650 might be closer to an Yamaha Tracer than anything that is really and adventure bike. Out of the two, I'd likely go for the V-Strom 1050 even despite its looks. It's a real issue for me but that V2 sound makes me extremely excited. And it's a pretty comfortable bike too.

    One of the best reviews on the 1050 Vee I’ve seen, however your score doesn’t reconcile with your review, and seems to be based more on design. For the money the 1050xt is really hard to beat. I got the all black XT and its pretty cool. However I have been looking for something a bit more exciting and had a test ride on the S1000xr and I am going to stick with the Vee. Whilst the s1000xr is orgasmic at high revs, it’s really not comfortable at the low end and because I do a lot of city riding, I couldn’t justify the significant increase in price for the thrill of the odd weekend ride. Are there any other bikes you would recommend having a look at? , considering I am 198cm and 36inch inside leg. 👍

      Thanks, I'm glad that you like the video. I tend to agree that it's still a good value proposition. I totally get your conclusion in regard to S1000XR and here I've got to give you credit for a pretty accurate description of what riding it in the city would look like. It's fun on a long stretch of road with no speed limit. V-Strom seems to be more happy in city riding but if you'd really like to enjoy slow speed punching your way through the traffic, then BMW R1250GS would be the number 1 choice with its perfect balancing and plenty of torque down low. My second choice would be the previous Ducati Multistrada, so 1260 or even one generation before, but absolutely after its face lifting in 2015 I believe. Those Ducatis do pretty well at low speeds and are pretty close to how good the GS is in this area but they sound a ton better having proper V2 engines. So if you like that in a V-Strom, then the sound of big Ducati twins should be fine to you too. They're also just as comfy as the V-Strom 1000. I hope that this helps! With your height though, the GS may have an edge anyway with that wide handlebar.

      I actually have an answer for you as I gave back a rented Africa Twin 1100 Adventure Sports from 2022 with DCT transmission. If you mention "city", this automatically directs me into the V-Strom 1050XT. On the highway it will also likely do better thanks to a much better seat than Africa. It's also not as hard to steer in traffic at city speeds. It may not be as eager to turn as Africa, but that's mainly an advantage on twisty roads. V-Strom isn't bad there either. If not V-Strom's design, I'd easily choose it over AT1100. The engine also feels just a bit more punchy than Africa's. Now, personally taking design into account, I'd have to go with Africa and accept that it's not as friendly as a V-Strom. All in all, I hope that you like the V-Strom 1050XT looks and can go with it as I consider it a significantly better choice for city riding than Africa Twin 1100. You haven't mentioned "offroad", so that would make this choice even more justified. I hole this helps, cheers! Dzieki too!

    Nice talk 👍
    I'm actually in the process of looking around and test riding bikes to replace my 2004 VStrom and it's not easy.
    So many great bikes out there, but even so, I'm finding them hard to justify the price tags, when my old VStrom, with some personal upgrades, isn't really worse than todays offerings...
    I didn't even consider this new VStrom, because it just doesn't look like a VStrom anymore. It just looks likes everything else on the market...
    IMO suzuki should go back to the first gen design, modernize it, loose a bit of weight, squeeze in more torque and i think loyal Strommers, like myself, would give it more consideration, based upon the first gen experience, which has been fantastic 👍
    What bike do you think would be a good replacement for the 1st gen?

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  2 года назад +1

      Good question to a former V-Strom owner (myself). I like punchy V2 engines with great sound, so the new V-Strom would be in the game along with KTM 1290 Super Adventure or Super Duke GT. I don’t care about off-roading and hence the Super Duke GT. But I worry that it may be too stiff but there’s no demo to try it. I also care a lot about precision in steering and good balancing so BMW R1250GS and Ducati Multistrada V4 are the two options (Triumph Tiger 1200 to be ridden soon). Here I don’t know about the KTM. In an old V-Strom 1000, there was no ABS and traction control, and it isn’t too stable at low speeds either. In the end of the day, I’ve got similar conclusions as yourself that there is no perfect replacement. The perfect combination would be a BMW R1250GS with Harley Pan America’s V2, 150 HP engine. I cannot think of anything else that would nail it. So GS would win if I could stand its sound and the tractor engine. This conflict is impossible to overcome for me at this moment. But I’m curious about the two KTMs mentioned. I hope this helps if you’ve got a similar perspective.

      I'm not sure I understand how mentioning a one push start means not knowing it. Sounds sort of illogical, doesn't it? What does "fully informed" mean exactly? Is user's manual a "full information" on a motorcycle and what matters when you ride it, or rather how certain functions work, how they feel and whether they are intuitive to use or not?

      If you mean a Ducati Multistrada 950S, then I might not be able to respond to that since I haven't had a chance to ride it before the V2 arriving. I'll likely jump on the V2 somewhere in 2023 and it may be interesting. Some used to say that they like this variant more than the bigger Multistrada. If it indeed would turn out to be just as good as the bigger one (older Variant) and have some areas at an even higher level, then well... it may just as well be an overall more well-engineered bike. Now if I'd personally include design into such a comparison, then sorry V-Strom. It would have to be Ducati in my case. I hope this helps.

    Bought mine 2 years ago and have ridden it quite a lot. I ride other bikes and have owned lots of bikes, a DL650 preceded this purchase. I don't disagree with some of your critical points; adjusting the windscreen from the front? Dumb. A bit too tall. Yep. But that's about it. I happen to really like the styling, as does pretty much everyone else. The front-end dive is no issue for me, and I also own a BMW motorcycle with that fancy BMW front suspension. Low-speed instability? Nope, but then again I don't lane split either. However, I can get to a stop sign/light and balance many times without putting a foot down. The one thing I have hated since the beginning, and only now coming to terms with, is the hydraulic clutch. I hate it. No feedback at all, and it disengages almost as soon as you pull on the lever. My old DL650 had that wonderful gearbox that clicked through gears like butter with positive feedback. Not so the new gearbox. I'm getting used to how it wants to be shifted, just don't care for it yet.

    • @VToldsMotoShow

      Interesting point about the clutch. I think that the disengaging behaviour of it has been there since the beginning of the V-Stroms in 2002. I believe that whatever changes Suzuki have done over the years, it's not a night and day difference. Even in the first V-Stroms, after installing a Power Commander and building your own fuel map, the difference would be like having eaten a lunch before riding or not - almost impossible to notice if you don't have two bikes next to each other to test. Manufacturers sometimes claim a lot of things that then turn out either pure marketing or just what they intended to do. Here I'd put it into the marketing slogans territory. Overall I like this engine as it's pretty encouraging but is it better than before? I can't really tell the difference. I hope that this in fact helps. Cheers!

      Can't comment on 1000XT but affer 5 years and 55k kms of SV650 the 1050XT(i own it for a month and 2000 kms)is definitely underwhelming below 3000rpm for a litre bike...It needs to be pushed and then it is OK,although as i said above then you deal with the clunky/skratchy 1st to 2nd gear change.Other than that the bike is beautiful,complete,easy,fast enough,has excellent brakes,it is well made BUT it lacks charisma as it was written above. It doesn't please me to drive it,in contrast with the SV(which has a perfect gearbox btw).

But yeh the 1000xt has a lot of torque until 3000 rpm( in fact peak torque is at 3000 rpm) for me the 1000xt is a better bike than the 1050xt because of many things.. The 1000 is lighter has some storage space below the seat, you can adjust the windshield while ridding, doesn't have a bunch of electronics you don't need but it does have the one's you need ( cornering abs and dual brake done by the abs if needed) and other stuff... About charisma looks whatever you want to call it i don't care about that, it's all subjective.. If Suzuki had compensated with thrifty pricing, I would be glad to see it around...it would have a valuable place. But it's gone the way of Honda with the Africa Twin and Yamaha with the Tracer 9 by acting like raising the MSRP is a way of keeping up with the competition, when the truth is exactly the opposite. I still own the Bandit 1250S that i bought for 9000 euros in 2008. At this time it was a bargain as the price a little later raised to 12000 euros. It wasn't the quickest, it wasn't with the best handling also it wasn't the best looking for it's category. But it was good at all the cases. Bottom line, I fell so in love with this motorcycle that 14 years later and I still haven't changed it. It is unbreakable due to the big engine and low HP, and everytime I test ride another motorcylce (lately i rode the Tracer 9 GT) I m thinking of the extra money I must spend to get the new motorcycle and if this money will offer me a big difference and then I decide not to change the motorcycle because I get less for this money. All this because it was in offer for 9000!!
      Funny thing is that the bike I had before the 1250 bandit was a VSTORM 1000, and I decided to sell it because in low speed and especially when turning in low speeds, the handling was bad and the engine had a tendency to switch off (it happened in some ocations).

Now I have a 1290SAS which is simply the best Adventure bike I have owned. I consider them the way to go for older riders. At 74 I'm not sure how many more I will own.

      I'd say that front suspension is still bad but a tad better. Definitely more quiet which I appreciate. I'm also wondering what 1290 SA is but no way to test any so far here in this part of Europe. All the best with your KTM!

    With respect.. the softness and stability you talk off after 6000 plus miles in all weathers and shity UK roads dosnt show to me at all ...🤔...the reason i purchased bike was after demo ride.. the low speed handling ... tech .... the value for money.... sold it too me....but hey we are all different..

      @VToldsMotoShow  2 года назад +1

      If you meant the soft front suspension and not enough stability when at very low speeds, then yes, this is up to some point personal judgement - like everything in fact. I base mine on comparing to other motorcycles in this and similar segments. "Shitty UK roads"? That was a good one. Let's hope this part improves for all of us. With today's raises in fuel prices, governments should have a lot of extra money to fix the roads. In theory of course...

    After owning 3 V-Stroms in a row I couldn't see myself purchasing this new model. I hate the look, front suspension, windshield, cheap dash, less wind protection, headlight... Just not for me but others may like it. So, went for 1250GS, the bike I thought I will never buy. My love was always with V-Strom so it was sad separation.

    on the vstrom650 you need to drive home, get off your bike, go upstairs, get your toolbox, than adjust the windshield, put the tools back and than you can ride on. its even worse! so the stupid solution is an upgrade at suzuki but i do think the oldschool design of the 1050 is badass!

  • @stockrappy
    @stockrappy 2 года назад

    my biggest issue with the 1050 is that it was a complete waste of resources from a company that has very few, they built a bike for a part of the adv market that was literally dying off instead of focusing on the midsize market like anyone that can actually read the market did.

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  2 года назад +2

      I wonder as I'd think that since it's sort of in between the 800/900 bikes and the 1200 ones, it could fill in the gap for so many who'd want something in between. There really isn't anything else for it to really compete. Also price-wise, it may be pretty good proposition. I guess that time will tell.

It's far better than on the Tracers 9 ( 2022 ) 🤮🤮 One thing that put me off - NO quickshifter avaliable ( even for the 2022 mod ) 😣 Maybe next year ?🤔 The price in Norway is over, overfarted. I think your review is a bit biased because you’re forcing your subjective opinion and bringing down an all around great bike. Yes, its fair to say its not a GS or a Multi but its still an awesome bike for the money. Can it get better with few updates? Of course! Anyhow, I like your channel but try to be a bit more objective and not focus on the things you don’t like so negatively. You’re going against the grain of what an honest review should be. Maybe choose your wording differently. Keep it up! 👍🏻

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  Год назад

      Thanks for sharing. My understanding of honest is that I'm not holding anything back and share exactly what I feel. It's also customer feedback for the manufacturer that I hope they appreciate even if it mentions imperfections. Otherwise we wouldn't go forward. So yeah, I feel like I'm sort of on a mission here. It all started with me not seeing a worthy replacement bike for mine in the category, so for my own good (and ours), I hope that manufacturers will consider the feedback. So, not being compensated in any way here allows me to say whatever I want with no external pressure. Love the sound? I say it. Don't like the seat, I also say it :). Is all of that subjective? It totally is, yet we're often similar in what we like and customer reviews are a super hot topic today. No better help that a recommendation/review of a trusted friend... Who I'm not exactly here but still not benefiting in any way from praising products, so at least 'honest'. I hope this shows my approach better. All the best!

    My seat makes my ass bleed it's so hard. It won't run on 95 octane and even detonates under load with 98. It's spoked wheels are not required for this level of off road ability. It's a road bike thats too tall.

      Everything I've ever ridden runs just fine on 95. You don't need 98 unless you're driving a supercar I believe. In older V-Stroms like my former 1000, it would choke and sneeze regularly due to a too lean of a fuel map. Could've been fixed with a Power Commander but I never bothered installing it in the end. Add an aftermarket exhaust and a less restrictive air filter, the thing is breathing even better and then things become even worse. In other words: nothing to worry about.

      @@VToldsMotoShow No offence but based on your opinion Honda has the same issue with the new NT 1100 because it has almost the same windshield adjustment for security reasons. On the other hand, as long as I know the standard version of Africa Twin which is more expensive than the V Srom XT doesn't have an adjustable windscrean and I haven't heared to many complainings for that. I've seen a Puig aftermarket adjustment system but, even though the adjustment can be made without dismounting, the rider still have to stop the bike because he must use his both hands for making the adjustment.
