  • Former King Gyanendra Shah, in an exclusive interview with Sagarmatha Television, believes that an internationally-accepted democratic system should guide the country. During the course of interview, he seeks a "space" (for him as well) within the democratic system, which he argued should fit well with the Nepalese context. Regarding about his Magh 19 takeover, Shah defends his move dubbing it a "demand of the then time and situation" what he said to "further strengthen democracy". In the course of interview, Former King Shah expressed serious worry about the country's current situation saying that nationality, democracy and sovereignty have been at risk. He unhesitatingly expressed his willingness to take the lead to protect democracy provided that people gave him the responsibility. Shah, however, said people should come forward...he would not take the initiatives on his own. Conceding that he made a courteous agreement with the political parties during the People's Movement II, Shah urged political parties to make sacrifices for the sake of democracy and the country. Claimed that the institution of monarchy still remains in the hearts of the people, Shah said he would continue to respect the people's sentiments and aspirations. He said that he would continue to be patient for some more time saying that he would prefer to remain in the rear for the time being.
