    One piece of information that is perhaps not clearly explained here is that ultimately pain is not an input signal to the brain but an output from the brain. In other words, it's the brain that produces the pain. Pain is a personal experience highly based on past experiences and context, and its intensity is proportional to the perception of threat.

    I didn't know about the 3 gates, so now I need to figure out where they all are as I live with chronic pain. Pain is a broad topic, so I thought you might touch on how emotional pain works, and why it feels like its coming from the chest. There should be quite a bit of data on the threshold of human pain, which is say much higher than that of a rabbit. And then how endorphins work to mitigate pain, and how poisons can trigger it. I clearly should be a pain specialist.

    I have had Fibromyalgia since puberty, and it creates two kinds of pain. There is the obvious musculoskeletal pain, due to hypertonic muscle tissue constantly stressing itself, my joints, and the muscle’s muscular attachments. It’s stiff and sore like you would expect.
    The second, and equally problematic pain, is the ambient pain. It is a pain that is just sort of… there. It is always present but never specific. The closest description I can give is the odd sort of pain you feel after a limb has fallen asleep for a significant period of time.
    Like when your arm is totally numb. It takes attempts to move it and time for the sensation to come back. That ache, that pain you feel as the limb wakes up… that is closest thing to the ambient pain. It’s like a constant low level version of that everywhere.
    I’m pretty sure it has to be my brain processing stimuli wrong, or something along those lines.

    Why don’t adults cry like children when they’re in pain?

    • @crisptomato9495
      @crisptomato9495 3 года назад +4

      I think children have more sensitive nerves and also adults have more life experience so a stubbed toe feels like a minor inconvenience compared to other struggles in their life but to someone who’s only been around for a few years stubbing their toe is literally the worst thing to ever happen to them so far in their entire life. Not based on any science just my two cents.

    • @hyperfoxartist9
      @hyperfoxartist9 3 года назад +1

      @@crisptomato9495 also I think it's to do with the emotional factor of pain. Since children often do not have the emotional maturity to deal with certain pain, crying is their only way to cope with the stress of being in pain and being so panicked by it, while adults know how to "suck it in" better from experience overall.

    You should look into how red heads feel pain differently. Personally, I am miserable in the cold, but can cut or whack myself with a hammer and clearly feel far less pain than another person. Since I do a lot of DIY, it's not uncommon for me to bleed onto something I'm working on and that's how I realize I've cut myself. Separately, my eye surgeon supposedly wrote a paper/article that I inspired after I warned them I needed extra anesthesia and I still kept waking up during surgery to the point that they ran out. I have long thought and said that intelligence is distributed throughout the body and does not reside ONLY in the brain. Obviously the brain controls most overall functions, and is where highly complex thought occurs (in some of us) but a heart will beat with no nerve inputs (as I understand it), here the spinal chord gates pain to the brain, so no brain control there, and systems like the gut are FULL of control feedback loops, etc. It is almost ALWAYS more complicated when you start to understand a subject into its fundamentals and interrelationships. I suspect there are MANY many more that will be discovered. So far we basically know nothing about the brain, compared to what I predict we will 50 to 100 years from now. Statements made by those in the know today may very well cause rolled eyes in the average intelligent well read (or programmed, or whatever, at some point) person of the future. The exponential curve of knowledge seems to be near vertical at this point with more cumulative information learned and stored in a week than was accomplished in a year not all that long ago. Thing is, it will just continue to approach the vertical...you think it's a crazy ride now, imagine living when AI has far surpassed us (if it does, seems pretty likely if the discipline continues) and we are TRULY just along for the ride. Reality is weird, quantum mechanics all the way to philosophy, maybe, in terms of answering the ultimate questions to life, the universe and everything. That is unless, of course, you buy into that 42 'thing'. I have not decided yet. :)

Pain is just signals, nothing more. If I burn your arm, but cut of the signaling bridge in your spine, you won't feel a thing.
