  • As mentioned in my previous book review, a lot of my piano education in university actually came from reading books on music and piano.
This book, Note Grouping by Thurmond, is a holy grail for all classical musicians. If you are looking to improve your :
    - musicality, technique, phrasing, interpretation
    - understanding of music and weight
    - sense of direction and movement in music
This is the book for you: amzn.to/3TIVqpN
In this video, I review this dense but practice book while breaking down it’s main idea of grouping. Understanding how to group notes drastically bumped my musical skills and understanding to a new level. I hope that the concept of note grouping will be just as effective for you too!
    Happy Practicing!

Very well prepared, Michelle. Watched it all. I wouldn't really advertise it, but I just couldn't help here. It is really so similar to what I teach about phrasing (you can read and watch about it in my Book 3 I sent to you some time ago). When I came up with a similar discovery a decade ago I was attacked. A lot. Because somehow phrasing was always perceived as something you approach intuitively and, it's either you have it in you or not. Well, you know what I mean...Thats why I am so so happy to see more videos about this topic, especially done as well as yours. Thank you for that

Hi Emma! Thanks so much for your kind words and no worries about advertising! I think your materials are very valuable and people should know about it! You said it really well- phrasing is often approached and learned from intuition but there has to be something underlying that intuition! This book did a really good job on shedding light on the shadow of intuition for both me and my students!

@@theOpenScore using it as a starting algorithm to give your creativity initial direction, and most importantly, to feel clear about the message you want to convey, is what this is all about. So well said. 🤍 thank you again for sharing this book with us all

Thank you for the recommendation, Michelle! Hopefully it becomes available in Kindle Format at an affordable price! 39 bucks for a second hand "heavily used" paperback is outrageous. Sorry!

I know! I think it’s because it out of print ☹️. Someone on Instagram told me that it’s available on eBay if want to check that out. I also saw some book suppliers selling the book after a quick google search but not sure if it’s actually in stock. Maybe we can cause a resurgence to get this book reprinted?Haha

Nice! I’ll definitely check the book out. It gave a very clear and concise method on something that isn’t really talked about in class and lessons. You did a fantastic job explaining as well.

Thank you for watching! Im glad you found my explanation clear - Thurmond is even more so! You’re right that this topic isn’t much touch upon in such a clear an practical manner. I’m finding that unless it’s cultivated holistically and intuitively- like in early childhood education, it gets lost in translation for people who didn’t have that access. He really fills in the gaps for those who need it!
