Here are two measures of five beats with the rests in brackets.

I just bought a goldfish has the same rhythm as 'CA-mels IN the WA-ter', which I was taught years ago. They are more like 10/8 time than 5/4. e.g. 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2 (repeat)... which is 10 beats.
    A good mnemonic for 5/4 is: MAN-go ban-NA-na... which is 1-2-3, 1-2 (repeat)... or 5 beats.

this might actually be my favorite of your videos on here. Wonderful lesson. Thank you! Edit:The groove pack is totally worth it. I'm only an hour in and my rhythm playing is already soooo much better. Best $25 I've spent in a long time!

As a composer, I really love 5/4, one of my favorite meters! It helps that I grew up playing percussion but for me it's always been that feeling of 4/4 plus an extra breath, if that makes sense. Like I feel the pulse of 4 beats and then there's just another breath or turn before the cycle begins. Hard to explain because it's kind of a feeling, but once you get into it, 5/4 is really fun because it actually is quite groovy and doesn't sound so lopsided after all!

This is fantastic stuff! Thank you Tom. I'd love to see another video about rhythm and ways to internalise rhythm. I often finding counting the beats makes me more confused whereas by using a stress-based sentence like " I just bought a goldfish" it is so easy to immediately internalise the rhythm so that it's not just one more thing to think about. However, teachers of classical piano may not agree
