Nice review! Going with the Float SL on my Top Fuel. I love the remote lockout feature, and i don't want to lose that.

I believe the Open 3 position adjustment is for low speed compression, not high speed.

Just bought the Float SL remote for my S-Works evo. Had Fox adjust the stroke (pity I didn’t watch this before) & they did the Specialized RX XC tune for what it’s worth, presume they adjusted the compression somewhat. Works really well on the bike so far, only issue being it’s a little noisy compared to the RockShox Sid Ult. Mainly hear it when stationary and bob the bike, can’t hear it much once up to a bit of speed so not a big issue.

Nice.... some of the fox fork dampers are a bit noisy in my experience as well but they work great.

I also recently installed a Float SL in my Epic Evo (standard tune). How firm is the firm mode on your shock? I was a little surprised at how much motion this shock still has in the firm mode compared to the Rockshox Deluxe that I was running previously. It is definitely firmer than open, but it is far from locked. Wondering if this is normal or there is something wrong with my shock...

I'm getting one installed on my epic evo as well, paired with a 130 fox performance 34 elite plus. How does the float sl ride on trails/tech /downhills vs the deluxe select plus or sidluxe?

You can dial both of those shocks into a similar feel but out of the box, that doesn't surprise me... I'd try playing with volume spacer size if you like the feel of your previous shock better... whichever direction you need.

Had the float Sl on my Evo for 7months now and love it. The damping is noticeably better than the Sid and super plush. It is a little softer than the Sid in lock out but this adds comfort and there’s no bob. If you have a remote just set it as far as you can before you tighten the crimp. Shock comes into its own the harder you push the bike on descents.

Working on one. I just got a new X in for the same bike to swap in and try.

Thanks for the review. I am trying to get my head around the relative sizes (volumes of the outgoing DPS, the new Float SL and this Float shock. Is this shock bigger than the DPS and the SL smaller than the DPS? I have seen pictures of this shock next to the new SL, but nothing with the existing DPS for comparison.
My bike (YT Izzo) was spec'd with a DPS remote and it doesn't handle fast, rough stuff at all well, it just chokes. My wife's Izzo Blaze was spec'd with a larger volume Rockshox Deluxe Ultimate. I swapped that to my frame to test the difference and it was way more controlled than the DPS. I am holding my hopes out for this new 2024 float to be a lot better on my bike, and suspect it will be, mainly because of a larger volume. I have one of these on order, hopefully I made the right choice.

As far as I'm aware, the new SL is smaller than the current DPS but you're right.... at this point, there's no confirmation out there. Thevfact that the SL and the DPS use the same volume spacers though probably means that its very close. Either way, this standard float is noticeably bigger. To me, the damper feels more robust. This bike is a bit of a challenge, being 130mm of wheel travel with a flex stay.... it's just demanding. And this shock deals with it really well. I think you're on the right track. I do wish it had high and low speed rebound control but for most people that would just get confusing so I get why Fox kept it simple.

@@DirtCraftMTB Thanks, I think this new Float will work better for my frame. The DPS is known to be a firm shock, best suited to XC, where pedaling efficiency is the biggest priority. The remote version I have is even more specialized, and only has open, “locked” and rebound adjustments. The open mode is not great for a 130mm trail bike IMO and there is no way of changing it without sending it back to Fox. I have tried playing with spacers, but that’s not we’re the problem lies. I will report back when mine arrives.

@@chrisbennett5796Fox's RUclips channel has a video comparing the Float SL, Float, Float X and Float X2.
Float SL is the lightest, the Float is extremely similar but has a bit more volume and weighs 60 grams more, the Float X has the piggyback, weighs more and is more of a rough trail/enduro shock, and the Float X2 is a straight up gravity shock. Not made for climbing. Made for ripping down mountains.

My Tallboy 4 Fox DPS broke. Wont stay in open mode, rebound doesnt work and the open compression setting wont stay off. Been riding FS MTBs for 20 years and never seen this kind of failure. I contacted Santa Cruz asking which shock to get. They said the new float was best choice a that it should improve ride. Just ordered it and new hardware. I hope they are right. $535 repair.

You'll have better durability out of the new float if my experience so far is any indication. The DPS is a good shock but does not tolerate weird frame forces very well.

So how did you find the new Float to be on that Stumpjumper? I have the same model Stumpjumper that you show with the flex stay and the shock is very sensitive to air pressure. I find you blow through the travel unless you set it up on the stiffer end of the spectrum. Adding a spacer helped, but not perfect. Is the new Float worth swapping over from the DPS that came with the bike? I was actually thinking of putting a Float X on it to gain some more adjustability which I think has the same size air can as that new Float. I was thinking that a firmer compression tune than what Specialized uses might also be beneficial.

I would go for the float X. The 2024 float didn't make enough difference to warrant the upgrade. It's a better shock than the DPS, but not enough to be night-and-day. I actually have a float X on the bench to try next but I know from previous tests that it'll be a huge gain over the DPS... especially on a bike like this with a very narrow window of optimal setup available.

@DirtCraftMTB +1 appreciate that feedback. What fork do you have on your Stumpy? Curious if the Float X kinda outperforms the Fox 34. I have the 2021 performance elite in this case.

How are you liking the Specialized Stump Jumper carbon frame?

    • @DirtCraftMTB
      @DirtCraftMTB  4 месяца назад +1

It was a great bike but I've moved on. I built an epic evo and a bigger trail bike. 2-for-1 special! I would recommend it though. It can be built to be an ultra light trail bike or a bruiser xc/dc style bike so if either of those are what you're looking for - go for it.
