Yeah, we love pressure points at my dojo but all my teachers say that in a self defense situation the best thing you can do is to get a very simple but effective technique out, which is oftentimes a good strike to the groin or face.
I’m no expert at martial arts (got some background) but I have the ultimate tip: You can’t lose the fight, if you ain’t at the fight - always run away if you can
This shows that a lot of the time the first few belts (for self defense at least), and the first self defense you learn in general, is usually going to be some of the best you'll ever learn. It's simple, it's effective, and its success rate is much higher than some of these big, very planned out movements. These big, fancy self defense options usually look good to beginners, because they think, "Complex = Effective", but most of the time, you're gonna want to use the simple, effective, and realistic self defense. EDIT: Of course all of the techniques and self defense you learn is important, but usually, (from my experience), you learn a lot of simple, effective self defense with the first few belt ranks. It is very important to always remember the original self defense that you learn on the first belts for this reason.
Heh... My Sifu likes to say that by yellow belt, you've already learned all the "dangerous stuff." From then on, it's just muscle memory, nuance, more muscle memory, some fancy stuff, muscle memory.
love the longer videos I truly believe you could one day become as well renowned in the martial arts community as Jesse Enkamp the mix of short form and long form content is something unique and if you keep posting stuff like this you will get to be one of the best out there. As David Goggins says: Stay Hard!🙏🥋👊
Hey nat, I’ve been subbed for a month and your workout videos help me out so much as a martial artist! I’ve been doing it for 8 years but this is the first time a workout video has helped me so much!
Nat learns martial arts not for the society's "real fights" but for the many other benefits and dimensions of martial arts... also he supports running in tough situations.. AND THATS WHY I LOVE HIS CHANNEL. POV- the jump back kick is op, but in sparring ... irl just run!
Definitely. The crazy stuff is fun and good to learn just to train your body how to move, but in practical terms, you'd be using a fraction of one of those crazy techniques. So, not at all great for RUclips School Of Self Defense. There's just no substitute for LOTS of training to unlearn bad habits and learn better ones. The challenge for any school is how to keep said training fun and engaging so it doesn't feel like you just practiced the same move for an hour. ;-)
Actually, as someone who's trained at both knife and firearms, we have this saying 10 ft rule. Meaning within 10 ft, the knife has the advantage. The only time a firearm has the advantage over a knife within that 10 ft distance is 1) you're already aiming at them before they attacked you. Or 2) you are extensively trained in speed draw and speed shooting. If neither of those 2 applies, and you have the gun and your opponent has the knife within that 10 ft distance, you have to either 1) create a distance to properly aim. Or 2) incapacitate momentarily to get a proper aim. You have no idea how in the heat of defending yourself, how easy it is to miss your target even within 10 ft of distance, without properly aiming. Just to be clear. I'm not saying what he did is right. What I'm saying is just because you have a gun doesn't mean you have the advantage.
Takeaway from this video: Quick and simple but effective techniques should be used for self defense and don't forget the basics. If you can run, run away and don't look back
Yo Nat thank you for the long video I needed it. The grab the nuts one was making die bro lol it was so funny. Nat keep up the good work and I also want more blitz attack videos please and as a white belt now it’s great to look up to a master in the arts who teaches you techniques. Thanks Nat I appreciate the videos ✊🏼🥋
10:57 honestly from what I know in fights with sharp weapons not getting hit is valued over killing the opponent, with a knife usually being held tightly, being too short to parry or parry with and not getting moved around pushing their hand away might be effective but that would require training which you probably aren't going to learn just for safe defense
my first time competing in tkd, i was nervous because i havent got the hang of various spin kicks my opponent (my friend) knew, but in the fight i quickly learnt that simple kicks in tandem with reflex and perfect timing is all you need, doesnt matter if you know 540 tornado kicks, because a perfectly timed roundhouse kick to the head is just as deadly (plus youll most likely miss the tornado kick as you can see it coming)
Simple moves when you are in a bad situation is good, but if you are able to get out without fighting, then run. Everyone should be aware of their surroundings even if it means to take out your earbuds/headphones
Please do more lol, this was amazing! Keep up the hard work, you’re doing great. I actually am learning a lot from your videos. really funny aswell Have a nice day dude!
Knife or not, "Not Being There" is always the best technique. Unfortunately, it's not always an option. Backed into a corner, other people around, trying to disarm someone who is threatening others, or if you're like me, you're just not a great runner and can never count on simply outrunning your opponent. Gotta disarm/disable them first. Even then, I think most people with a broken ankle can probably outrun me.
I never like when they kick the balls because there are a good bit of situations where that just won’t work. If you’re getting attacked by a guy on meth, he’s not going to feel that pain
This! I tell my students to know the difference between a strike that is disabling vs one that is merely painful. A painful blow might work, and a blow to the balls can psychologically stun a guy just from the anticipation of pain. But drugs, alcohol, or just plain the adrenaline of an intense situation, can all mask pain. Speaking for myself, it recently dawned on me that every major injury I've had in my little life, I never felt pain upon impact. The pain comes a minute or 10 minutes or 30 minutes later when the adrenaline and shock wears off. I'm talking broken bones, torn ligaments, bruised ribs... Yeah, if you even think your ribs just got bruised, don't be all "I'm fine! Let's go do some pullups!" Ask me how I know!
Nat all of your videos by their selves are perfect enough to make someone's day/week/month! If you ever need to take a break just letting you know it's completely fine, keep up the amazing work mate, would like to 1v1 you some day >:)
'In this day and age, the perfect martial artist adapted to the current situation of the world will never exist'- WELL, YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN THIS GUY YET!!!!!!! NGL bro your vids are the BEST
It depends on target; a closed fist is best for softer targets (nose, solar plexus, etc.), whereas the palm of the hand is better for bony areas (where it is strongly probable that you would break your knuckles). That is the real reason boxers, and MMA fighters wrap their knuckles and wear gloves.
Great , Nat I love your long videos , please keep doing this kind of theme , you can discuss with everyone whether a lot of self defense videos are useful 💪😎
About these pressure points, I also thought they were useless. I'm taekwondo praticer and one day my kyosanim brought a hapkido teacher to our dojang. He used one of this and that pain was wild, I swear hahah
Palm strikes are good it can damage your opponent when you hit them in the face or just the "lower area" I know your fist can inflict more damage but if you are not trained there's a chance of you breaking a knuckle or two specially if you punch some in the face in reality it will hurt you too so best thing todo in a fight is just run away really
8:44 But do you think a normal person without any training would be able to pull that off? I think we all underestimate how hard it was for us to do the Mawashi Geri at the start. The swinging motion, flattening your foot, turning the heel, etc. I don't think I'm wrong in saying that all of us needed some attention from the trainer to be able to throw it at any level. Not quite 'solid'. The block was also pretty conditional, I suppose? It makes it easier if the other isn't expecting it, but I've tried it with a few friends from the dojo, and the results have been pretty negative.
he has a point when it comes to the intricate stuff, thats why we loosen the opponent up and then get to it, plus, if you do the intricate stuff straight away theyll be able to resist and youll have to muscle them down which isnt good form and will prob fail as the opponent can throw attacks at you as nat said
Sorry to say this but you're 100% wrong. Let's be honest you haven't been in Many street fights have you. Well I have. And if you are trained in aikido or krav Maga etc you want to do those arm and wrist locks right off the bat. It usually happened too because roid monkeys like to grab people in street fights and those are the ones I like to fight. But yes those crazy wrist locks are effective
~3:45... Previous life in Shotokan Karate and Ki Aikido, current life T'ai Chi/Kung Fu. Not seen that specific technique, but looks like a basic "Splitting Energy" technique. Most all of these that you critique as too elaborate, "Attacker isn't going to stand there and let you do all that," definitely true and definitely useless for the "civilian" who doesn't train to just learn off the interwebz. My Sifu calls the elaborate stuff like that (which is most of what we learn/teach) "swiss army knife" moves. The understanding being that you'll never use the complete technique as taught in a street fight. But you're developing the muscle memory to pull elements of the technique out by instinct when needed. My school also puts a lot of emphasis on the real fact that street fights will be messy, chaotic, unpredictable, and you'll end up in a lot of spots you really didn't mean to be in. "Woo-hoo! I totally blocked that punch! And... totally left myself open for the next thing so now I have to adapt and fast." To that end, I also call a lot of our techniques "Oh shit moves." I ended up in a position I didn't want to be in, now how do I adjust and get out of it? Finally, a huge difference I've experienced between Karate and Kung Fu; I think of Karate as "Cooties" and Kung Fu (especially T'ai Chi) as "Touchy-Feely." Most Karate techniques (also currently taking Kempo on the side) are about strike-and-get-out-of-there. My opponent has cooties and I don't want to touch or be near them any more than I have to. In Kung Fu/T'ai Chi, we do a lot more stepping into the attack and keeping contact with our opponent to know where they are and where they're going... Then run when you know you can get away. E.g.; I've never been a strong runner and my pushing-60-years-old knees ensure that my opponent needs to be on the ground with a leg or two disabled before I can confidently outrun them. ;-) Loving your vids! Especially critiquing McDojos (my Sifu calls them Belt Factories).
Gen .up I've done the low kick catch leg trap thing. Its distance management and timing rather than reflexes. It's pretty.much one movement for the leg bit. Then arms is easy if don't wait at all. Wan lv
When i trained krav maga, i had to learn a lot of "advanced" grapples that really didn't seem like they would work on the streets, but some of them DID actually seem useful
