  • A person sent me their Sharp X68000 computer for repair. They got a good deal on it because "smoke was coming out the top". In this video I figure out what's wrong with the system, make some repairs and then take the games for a test drive. Enjoy!

All cats are pretty much the same.. it's all about them, and even my 13 y.o. Tigger cat still has to spend some time in the 'kitty jail' once in a while.😸 She insists on being between me and the keyboard and of course when she stretches out, her feet are all over the keyboard, causing much havoc. An actual desoldering iron with built in electric pump helps a lot. Ben isn't using enough flux (hardly at all) here and that makes it really difficult to manage. Additionally, higher end irons where the heating element is built into the tip usually does better for points that may soak up more heat (especially on ground planes) because it's a bit more efficient at it. I went from a WES51 which it looks like Ben is using to a Hakko FX-951 and my soldering jobs are overall much better.
In a lot of ways doing through hole is harder than surface mount. If you want to learn more about doing soldering more delicately, check out Louis Rossmann's videos or RetroGameModz.

Quick tip: I use Google translate for manuals in different languages, since Google bought out WordLens (I think it used to be called) you can view translations on-the-fly. Also a fun fact: Robert Patrick (who replaced Moulder) is Richard Patrick's (lead singer of Filter) brother.

I love finding those old monitors that have vga, composite, svideo inputs and also speakers built in. Especially the built in speakers, saves quite a bit of room in the game room having it all in 1. That HP screen really got around too, found several here at Goodwills.

Nice job on the restoration. I really like the catamaran design of the machine. The insides remind me of the Atari TT030.
