He probably wouldn't argue aloof either, but again I don't think that's accurate based on my personal experiences. I'll say this much about David Murray- he did the thing I asked if you could do for fun, the thing about putting an analog joystick on a C64 and proving it would work with an Atari 2600 the same way if anyone were crazy enough to write a game to take advantage of it. Though he just adapted a game port controller to the joy port and never implemented the up and down directions as extra buttons. That was super cool to see a proof.
The FREDDIE chip can be easily replaced by a bunch of 74HCT logic chips. There is a PCB with a footprint of DIL40 which has all the needed chips (SMD version obviously) on it. Of course, you may also use GAL/CPLD, as the equations are known.
Aside from the understandably limited color, it's easily the smoothest, best sounding and closest to arcade gameplay that I've seen from a pre 32X port.
when I was a wee little one, in the 80s, just after our 7800 died, we got one of these as an entry level computer... and then I think my mother had us replace it with a commodore 64.
Thanks Ben, always entertaining ! Those 3D games were maybe using special hardware specific features, otherwise i can't see how the 6502 or Z80 i remember could do ?
Great repair, I was amazed at the 3D games being shown, especially that 2017 remade version. My 286 definitely wouldn't have done that! Basketball looked pretty cool too though. Good point about recycling those IDE cables in the beginning, I think I've sworn not to buy wire again since I've got bags of all kinds collected in the attic by now (rental)
Watched your video on the Mario's Cement Factory repair and the deal with the polarized films a couple of days ago. (I think I still might own the Game and Watch version.) Yesterday I go to pick up my prescription sunglasses, and when I go outside while wearing them, the world looks all surreal and funky. Went back to the store to discover that the lenses were oriented incorrectly when they cut them out, so they weren't both polarized in the same direction. It made for a strange effect, and a strange coincidence that that happened right after I watched your video.
Ben, I have an XEGS, and a few of these 8 bit computers from the 80s. Do you have a recommended replacement power brick that doesn't weight 2 tons? I have yet to find a reputable answer. Keep up the awesome content!
Didn't think I'd be watching a game of Ballblazer today! Back in the 80s my nephew always wanted to play with me but he was too young and couldn't control it very well so I would give him a joystick, set him up as a droid and then I would play against "him".
