Hyundai Elantra Short Block Replacement In 6 Hours - Time-Lapse
Just did an engine swap on a 2016 Hyundai Elantra, pulled the engine through the top. Was a pretty smooth swap out, but when I started the engine the water pump backing plate fell off the shaft. Now I have to put in a new water pump. It's been fun! Thanks for the video.
Did you have a 1.8 or 2.0
@@adammohammed9550 I believe the 1.8
@@bigdawg1108 my son has a 2013 Hyundai Elantra with a bad engine. Did you have an installation guide? The time-lapse looks like he had to set timing and stuff so I"m looking for that info
6 hours Canadian...thats like 4.6 US hours!
lol
More like 16 hours when you work the same job as he does and know they’re bs-ing lol.
I have a 2014 Elantra and it is going into get the short block replaced aswell. It started making a ticking noise around 80,000 kms. The warranty covers up to 100,000 thankfully! Very cool to see the process!!
Could you share if they charged you anything for the replacement? I'm getting one soon and they're asking $800+tax for fluids and replacement of some parts.
I'm getting replace a short block too, under warranty. my 2013 elantra sedan has a piston slap sound at 75k mi. What other components do you recommend to replace for a big job like this??? At 75,000 mi. Or 8 year old car.
@@jakegonz9866 do you have the car back? Do you get a warranty on the replaced short block?
Mine got redone in canada. Didn't have to pay for anything. They also broke my timing chain so I got a new one free. And they also gave me a new tensioner
The tech seems very focused and fast ,clean shop too .
good one
Awesome vid, here on the east coast we cheat and pull them through the top, little less work in the end! keep em comming
Same
Super easy to drop them out the bottom. You don’t need to remove the subframe it fits right out no problem with the subframe left in.
Thanks Joel. I may have a long block swap later on this week. If you want.
Simulation Gaming would love to see how you do them. I do alot of 2.4 swaps lol
Impressive, but u didn't show the start up and drive away from lift. Wtf over lol
That was like a Handy without the Finish
Great video Joel, looks like he's done it a few times before, also he checked and adjusted those timing marks over and over until he was 100% sure, I do the same thing you can never be too careful!
He probably has a ton of practice since their engines are junk.
My ears are bleeding but the video was what I need so thank you very much!
thats pretty cool. Liked the music added to it as well
Nice clean and organized shop.
Can you put the year of the car you will work on next time so we know is not our car and don't waste the time getting in here? thank you so much.
quick guestion , when they replace the shrt block under warranty is it a differant part number that wont break again or should i expect the same thing in 60k?
Valid question. I’m looking into a reman myself
5:56 "FUCK OFF! CANT YOU SEE IM BUSY HERE!"
What a great informative video. My 2013 elantra will hopefully be getting the short block assembly replaced as well 🎉
Thank you for the video
Very clean work place and clean work awesome!!
I want to know What is the name of the adjustable table or stool that you used to stand the engine and transmission and where i can get it??? Please help me
I feel like that’s a service writer in the button down 😂😂
Seems like he's done this more than once, LOL! That's the kind of people I like to work with.
NO BS, JUST GET IT DONE.
The guys a beast he's so clean 👍
I will say you guys work at some nice clean dealerships. I have a friend that works at a Jeep dealership. The place is dark and dank. The floors are always slippery and the whole place is just a mess. Not a place I would want to have to work in day in and day out.
Wow my 2011 Elantra needs a new motor replacement in it . How much ch this cost here to do. N where is this shop at .
6 hours ! Looks bloody good going
Any chance on getting this video in regular time? Asking for my ticking 1.8L Kia engine...
Just wondering do they put on a new timing belt....or chain
I’ve seen so many blow up and have done so many that if I really tried I can do 2 short blocks in a 9 hour shift. I hate how Hyundai doesn’t address this issue even in the new chassis. I’ve done one from a 2021 sonata.
Try a 2022 palisade with 15k miles lol
@@rudysalazar1986 Had a brand new engine start knocking on the post install test drive. 2.6 miles on it.
As a Hyundai technician, that is the most over complicated way he could’ve removed the engine. The 1.8l in the Elantra’s can easily be removed by pulling off the core support and removing the motor from the front
NOTICE at 5:49 that guy working on white car across the isle walks over to him to say, "Dude, take it easy. You're making the rest of us look bad."
He answers, "Shut the hell up and get back to lifting and lowering that car. And make sure you bill only 15 minutes for replacing the clips on that bumper."
2013 Hyundai Elantra makes a ticking sound in the engine. pls what the solution, does changing the engine block solve the problem.
Pls I need some to explain🙏
U need a new short block
I might have this done on my Elantra. Looks like a lot of parts get taken off in process - replace with new? I’m thinking water pump, alternator, starter, coolant hoses, timing chain, serp belt - anything else a good idea? ‘12 with 150k miles.
Short block is just the main rotating parts berrings crank rods pistons and rings ect
They re used the head and everything else from the old long block
Needs info on jacks his using to hold engine and transmission please!
So my 2013 Elantra had a knocking sound which started on a very cold day. My car has just over 103,000 km which is just out of warranty. I took it to the dealership and because I've done the proper maintainance and oil changes, they are going to replace the short block at pretty much no cost to me, I just have to pay $300 for the initial tear down. I don't really understand what the short block is, am I getting a new engine? am I getting partially a new engine? which part is the short block, the bottom or the top? am I getting new pistons, valves? Does my car go back to a 0 (cero) kilometer engine?
I know, too many questions, I'm pretty ignorant, help me understand please!
Short block is just the bottom end. Long block refers to the actual engine block and heads.
I have a 2016 Elantra and it started making noise at around 20,000 km... They dicked me around until last week at 52,000 km and it sounded like a diesel. Doing it next week now.
Getting my 2014 Elantra done at 65,000km on monday. Hope the mechanic is as goid, clean and concentrated as this guy. I'm wondering if this decreases or increases the value of your car?
Couldn’t help notice in the background. You seem a little conflicted. You have a pentagram with a rosary on your wall . What statement are you making ?
Who makes those blue lift tables?
I like these type of videos better than the snapon Wednesday videos
Looks like he has done a few of them?
I thought only the 2.4 was affected with warranty issues due to metal contamination in the bigger models like the Sonata? I have 2021 Kia Forte 6 speed with i think they call it the 'Allison' engine
How does a shortblock replacement work? I’m getting one done rn by Kia, and they’re saying it’ll take months to do.
So what happened with the missing Snap-on Wednesday video last week?
Under the weather bro.
The only thing I do not understand is why he took the transmission off together with the engine? Couldn't have just the engine off?
I gotta get me some of those engines stands, whats the part number for those bad boys?
Cool i guess. The music sounds dope. 6 hours damn. Bet hes done 100× in his life time.
Is it the same process with the 2018 models?
I got a question 2017 hyundai tucson it has 40,000 on clock before the oil changes do it's eating almost all the oil last oil change there was no oil in the oil pan what do you think the problem is pcv valve or....
I followed your video and got the powertrain out just like that. Would you Know how to install the dual clutch back on??????
Incredibly fast .
What are those stands he's using to rest the engine & trans on?
That engine looks massive, why is it so big???????
What are those blue Jacks he is using?
Great vidja joel! Them things can be and awful pain in the ass!
After all that.....Did it run???
could the engine be removed from the top of the car or only from bottom ?thanks for your input
It is possible. My sister's 2016 Elantra got the engine removed from the top (due to hydrolocking).
Awsome video! !!!
Bad ass intro song 👍🤘
3:46 "you done yet?"
Joel is he your buddy from the ride along with jose vidro
Dicky Snader yeah man. I’ve known him for years.
cool good job
6hrs? please what took you so long?
Love to music
Sweet. Hyundai Short Block Tuesday!
Damn, no start up at the end? Still impressive though.
Looks like the dealer provides the toolboxes if you look across the way unless that's a different dept otherwise some mechanic has more money than he knows what to do with in regards to the large long workbench boxes and top cabinets as well......
Yes this dealership does. The boxes are made by my buddy from Shark.
Pls educate me ,is this another word for engine swapping or something else? thanks
sakitlikod1 yes kinda, a short block is assembling the engine piece bye piece and what I mean by that is you will get the cylinder head, bottom end cams , cam shafts valves, timing chain and other engine internal components i didn't mention and you will have put it all together ,a long block would come pre-assembled at the factory
Hope I answered your question
How much does this type of work cost for a Hyundai Elantra altogether?
If it is out of warranty around 4300 Canadian, got mine replaced at zero cents cost.. very lucky taking in account my car was 11 years old and a very little up 100,000 km
My 13 has a good piston slap but I’m 2nd owner and 118k
nice 1 Joel bad ass video 👌
I was wondering if you could find out the brand on the engine stands
I will ask bro.
The Snap-On Tool Review did U ask
Wondering what happened to this guy
No safety glasses?
Doesn't appear to be his first rodeo
Cleaning the timing cover on top of the motor is super bad man. How can you trust your car at a dealership when these techs are barely getting paid they aren’t taking the extra hour to clean stuff properly. That’s a machined surface 😂 you can’t scratch that let alone dropping dirt and grime into the engine
Do these Hyundai engines generally have a lot of problems ?
DJR5280 hell yes I work at Hyundai and today alone we did three motors
Piston slap on the 1.8 '12-16?
...I understand bc the blocks weren't de-burred and piston design a little short.
I find it easier to remove the lower ball joint and outer tie rod and leave the spindle attached to the strut. To each their own
I leave the subframe in and pull the front clip off. Takes about 35 minutes to pull one out.
I didn't see if he primed the oil filter..?.
Must have been warranty
And then the 45 minute bleeding process starts. Lol
corey swan bleeding process? What?
James Richardson cooling system . Its a pain in the ass on that engine to get all the air out
Air lift. 1 min
Na, he used the cooling system refiller.
We use air lift
What would cause a 2014 elantra to burn oil?
Richard Peralta either the pcv valve which only nine dollars or twelve dollars it’s cheap but it also can be the rings on the piston and valve stem seal
Shit dude, I recognise that pentagram.. "if it hurts none"
drained the oil and coolant into the same bucket...nice. no environmental protection agencys in canada?
bob Martinez looked like he had a drain pan inside of the oil drain.
EPA ! Corrupt
How long does Hyundai charge to replace the block?
Mike V free under warranty so no idea
Im getting mine changed (short block), im at 103,000 km, just out of warranty, but they are going to cover it thank God! Just because I did the proper maintainance and oil changes. They quoted the whole thing for $7,000.00, but I only have to pay $300 out of that, which is for the initial tear down to see if I did good maintinance, and determine if they'd cover it or not.
@@henrynaranjo-villada8174 We just picked ours up today after replacement 98,000k.
So i picked mine up a week ago, at the Spruce Grove Hyundai dealership. Eventhough they covered the engine, they found a way to get my money. They pulled the engine up instead of dropping it (like you see in the video) and cracked my shift cables in the process. They denied damaging the cables and claimed they were broken from before (i swear they were not), and wanted me to pay over $1,000.00 to replace those (over $400 for parts and over $500 for labour). Whitout replacing the cables I can not change gears. I fought as much as I could, but the only thing I could do was to get them to cover half of it and I covered the other half, plus about $200 for the initial engine tear down. They got $711.00 from me. Im so mad! the car is running very good though, but I shouldn't have had to pay a cent for this, it was a warranty issue!! SO DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SPRUCE GROVE HYUNDAI, THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO SCAM MONEY OUT OF YOU!!!
Couple questions.
1) where those vacuum hoses hanging from celling? I'm bay next to him?
2) was that at your shop?
3)when he sprayed break wash on top of engine won't that get inside engine?
Dam I feel like a bitch it took me 16hrs to do a head job on a Mazda 2.2 in a forklift.
matthew placencia
Those hoses are probably retractable and could go up and down when need be. The break cleaner was sprayed on the head and would be evaporated when he cleaned it off. He probably spayed more on certain spot where silicone gasket (RTV/Permetex) would be applied.
What the hell took him so long just kidding, man looked like a lot of Shit going on in them six hours awesome video as always Joel and thanks for sharing brother.
hyundai no wonder they offer you amerca;s best warranty
Bro how do I find out we’re I can get those blue stands he is using?
I was wondering the same thing. Where can I get those blue stands?
cwandino I know right those would make my life so much easier Ive been looking online
Me too!!!
Has to be a name on those stands somewhere. Maybe the video maker will comment......
He got them at princess auto
Take engine out , this is pro attitude.
And by the way like the sonata that engine too comes out the top with the hood still on. Just sayin
SORRY BUT THATS NOT MUSIC NOTS JUST NOISE OR SOMETHING. 🙉🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻🤷🏿
Dope
How many hours does this pay?
Pedro Bilt 11h or so
Which unfortunately comes out to around 175$ after taxes for the tech......totally sucks I charge 900$ for a job like this those boys definately need paid 40$ per book hr I quit the dealer at 25$ per hr didn’t make sense to me of course my wife provides the health insurance
$175 bucks!!! For all that work! !!!!!
Yes sir better than working at Walmart for 10$ per hour but dam after tool expense and gloves wife bitching about dirty clothes etc course dealer Prob lt has uniform service but still...tech need paid 40 per hour dealer charge 80 they still making a killing course most dealers charging well over 100 and screwing the tech I about to open a shop paying my boys 35 course no health insurance be hard to get help at 35
I think that is not worth it only because of how expensive the tools and boxes are it's fucking insane, I'll stick to being a butcher pays good and don't fuck back for some asshole dealer
Engine Man!
kinda confused why he dropped it out the bottom since it's an auto, but to each their own
A lot of people say take it out the top. Well, like a lot of shops these days they have built in boxes. Try getting a cherry picker in front of a car to bring it out of the top when you don’t have the room. I personally take all me engines out the bottom as well. It’s nice to have it on a platform and put the car up out of the way.
To drop them its real simple as a flat rate tech. Top out you will need couple guys helping you :)
I pull manuals out the top block and trans together not much longer than an auto
황석 I pull them out the top solo only need someone to hold the hood when I take it off
Toolbox tour plz😭
Whatever.
I can do it in 4.....
J ROD and I caught a fish this big lol
I call bullshit
Your right jus joking
My kia!! X. My Avante!!! ㅇ
No start up...smh 😐
Why is it that every other tech is wearing gloves and safety goggles except him?? 🤔🤔 #SuchARebel
I am old school and don't wear gloves unless neccassary
Is THAT A DIMEBAG DARREL POSTER
First!!
Prob pays 20hrs
Pays 8h
9.2
He’s lying to you all. You can’t do those in 6 hours. Warranty pays around 12.9 hours, I do heavy line for Hyundai and have done those. It takes 5+ hours just to get a Long block running since you have to swap all the components onto the new assembly.
Warranty pays under 10 hours for this actually.
The Snap-On Tool Review Not targeting you but none of the techs here think you’re telling the truth. By all means post a real-time video of this being done in 6 hours and if anything someone can learn from it.
Jacob Pockros first off, this wasn’t my build, Vince in this video now works for us, and I’ve seen it personally done in 6 hours. When you know exactly what tools to use and you’ve done 10 of them already it becomes very easy to hit that number. I do long blocks in 5 hours all day. My record for a short block is just over 7, and I’ve only done a hand full of short blocks.
The Snap-On Tool Review Why don’t you just post the video without being sped it since it was recorded anyway?
Jacob Pockros I didn’t record the video. The person doing the short block did.
