@@Arctic_Adjuster Please do not act so naive. These people don't steal just one every couple years. How many times does a scrap metal dealer buy converters from the same people with no ID that come in every week with more than 1? Far too many scrap metal dealers will knowingly buy stolen material regardless of what laws they avoid to do it because stolen material has a higher profit margin.

Some years back when all the tweakers were stealing cooper wire from A/Cs and buildings bring built they made the recycle plants start getting copies of drivers license and writing down their plate number and you couldn't bring them burnt wire without having some kind of permit and i think you have to have a really good excuse or proof for them to buy the converters from you.

Goldsmith / Master Jeweler here. that won't work, here's why. too many DIY on youtube. yep they're showing how to recover the precious metals yourself, skip the middleman. once recovered they can go to jewelers and sell it. i buy from reputable suppliers. when i buy from private customer when they want to use their gold to keep costs down (i pay more than cash for gold places) problem with that also is i have to refine it and that brings customers profit margin lower. refineries also buy metals from anyone, it use to be only if you were in the business but everyone has jumped on the bandwagon.

Here in Maryland scrap yards require you to have a business license to sell converters not sure if it's a state law or what. I don't think it helps at all the thieves will just pay someone who has a business license to sell them. I buy and drive beaters when they won't drive no further I scrap them it's a pain in the rear for me because I can't sell converters that I've legally obtained my cousin has a business license so I get him to sell the converters or I list them on the internet. A few months ago I bought a Toyota Prius it was wrecked on the passenger side I was going to drive it but then I found out the converter on that thing could be worth 1000 to 1500 dollars. I got 1200 dollars for the converter anyone with a Toyota Prius should take EXTRA steps to insure there converter isn't stolen. Like I say it's a pain because honest guy's have a hard time selling converters but I have to agree with you steps need to be taken to slow down or stop converter theft.

So ill say this, I work at safeway on 182nd and powell. Maybe a month ago I was outside on lunch and these 2 men pulled up next to this car and started taking the converter to this car and I asked what they were doing and they got scared and jumped back in their car and speed away. Unfortunately the man who owned the car came outside right after and I told him what happened, and they did indeed take his muffler and convtere.

It seems to me people approach the stolen catalytic converter thing all wrong. I see people trying to confront thieves. That's not really the most effective way to do things. These guys need a getaway van and it's usually unguarded. Disable it.
Make CERTAIN you're confronting a thief and not some guy genuinely working on his car. Don't make his life even more miserable because you got it all wrong. And make sure the getaway car is the right one and not some visitor at your neighbor's house. But if you're pretty sure he can identify his own vehicle ("Hey, this your car over here?")....
Throw a stink bomb in his getaway vehicle, or a bag of your dog's crap, spray paint the fender with "Cat Thief" in orange, let the air out of the tires, eggs on the windshield, water in the gas tank. You were a kid once. Anything to slow 'em down on the exit, or makes them obvious to police who see them drive by. Let the police come and match that "cat" fresh in his hands, or his "cat" tools, to the job he was working on. The only way to fight back is fight smarter and fight as a community. Tag and release.
(keep your damage reparable or wind up in jail yourself)

The problem is not the recycling plants. What they actually do is bust open these catalytic converters crush the core which is made from precious metal then pulverize them untill it's dust. They then ship this metal out of state or even country to a refinery that can process them in solid palladium , platinum and rhodium. Which then is cashed out. Palladium per oz $ 2,013.54. Platinum per oz $943.00. rhodium price per oz $11,800.00. You can see now why this is happening. This is why catalytic converter are stolen. These low level criminal gets litterly scrap. But these big guy who are bagging these dust truly are the money maker. A garbage bin full of dust amounts to $100K.
