  • I give you my thoughts on the recent Mecum Auto Auction event where the original 1970 Dodge Challenger RT Black Ghost sold for almost 1 million dollars. This is a piece of Mopar History that Dodge decided to build a special edition of 53 years later. What do you think of the original Black Ghost?

Let's set the record straight on the original "Black Ghost". I'm 71 years old and lived 3 miles from Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak, MI. I was on Woodward racing at least 5 nights/week in my '69 Diamond Racing built 396 Camaro. It would run low 11's at Detroit Speedway. Yes, this Challenger is a very rare and sought after car but a legend? Terrorizing Woodward? Hardly. Never heard of that car. People's memories are lacking and the stories coming out are probably about a car called Silver Bullet a bonafide factory sponsored Hemi beast. This car that just sold is a stock Hemi and there were lots of cars on Woodward that could leave a stock Hemi in the dust - mine being one. This so-called legend is completely made up to promote the movie the guy made about it. Maybe his Dad raced it but it was not a legend. Take it from someone who was there at the time. I still build and drive muscle cars...always have, always will. My current ride is a '66 Buick GS 462 Stage 2 ruclips.net/video/DD8vLrAMoho/видео.html

Issue about this car is this- it's loaded with options & stock. No headers, stock cam, stock wheels & tires, front swaybar on it, no trick head work, and a stick...it is neat, the original buyer was a vet & cop. But a Dart with a built 340, headers, auto, 4.10's, and tires would beat it. Sorry, it may have beat some other stock offerings, but it's wasn't a threat to a lot of vehicles in that era

A legend that no one has ever heard of. The original is a 14-second car, maybe into the 13's on a good day..But there were some documented 10-second machines prowling Woodward at the time. When the car first surfaced a few years ago I had never heard of it so I reached out to some old-school Detroit runners I knew for the story. Most had never known of the car and only one who had said it was never a serious street contender. The story is marketing hype and it seems to have paid off. But the truth will eventually get out. Tony DeFeo just did a video on it and exposed some interesting facts. Don't get me wrong. It IS a very rare car in it's own rights. But it's legend status is fabrication.

Waaaaaaaaay beyond baffling for how low the car went for. The buyer got a great deal for an original car with a nationally known history. Wouldn't surprise me if the car is put up for auction again it would go for many times more.

In the height of the muscle car Era in the king of muscle car cities, this bone stock smoked all comers? Hahaha. Jesus, people believe anything that's on the internet.

The Story is True !! It was Authenticated by the Historic Vehicle Association. It was Chronicled on Lou Costabile You Tube Channel over 5 Years ago with the same exact story. There are comments on the vehicle racing in Detroit on Mac's Motorcity Garage from 2014. Cletus T Rickenbacher 3rd on October 9, 2014 at 10:03 am said:
There were everything from stock 4 door sedans, motorcycles(1 of the fastest there was a pink Sportster) and borderline Pro Stock cars that would run down close to 9 seconds. Most races were for bragging rights, but on many occasions money changed hands. I watched one go for $1500 between a 454 Camaro and a Hemi Challenger (Challenger won by a 1/2 car length)."
The Historic Vehicle Association, MECUM, and The US Library Of Congress. Authenticated The Story !!

I grew up in the 70’s. First car was a 318 72 Duster with a manual 3 speed. 8 3/4 rear end. 3:23 gears. Stock it was slow. But with headers, aluminum 4 bbl. intake, carter 750 avs carb and cam dynamics cam. Recurved distributor and 340 heads ported. It would run the quarter mile at 13.8 @ 102 mph. So I believe with the right da and temp. This 426 Hemi Challenger would run better than 14 seconds. Stock it was for sure not owning the street. But in the 70s would of held its own against stock big block cars of the time. Cudos to the kid who sold the legend. It’s now history and will be told as such. Win. Win situation.

Bone stock survivor car. Cool car regardless but the whole story is bs. Big stories create big reactions which leads to big business. If you REALLY think that dodge, mecum, hagerty, the owner, and movie studios arent all interwoven into making this spectacle happen, I have some ocean front property in Kansas for sale.

Personally, that's way more than I expected the car to sell for. This wasn't a movie car like the Steve McQueen's Bullet Mustang that sold at auction for over 3 million dollars. This is a 1970 426 Hemi Challenger RT SE with a gator roof which apparently was a factory error and a Detroit street racing story attached. I would be interested finding out how many people were aware of this car before Dodge used it to sell their Black Ghost final edition.
