I had to stop the video to praise the intro. Best so far, and amazing. The Billy Idol amazing song, with that footage, just wow. Knocked it so far out of the park. I never comment, even though all your videos are great. Well done, sir. Well damn done.
Not Christmas lights. They are out of style decorations that malls used YEARS ago. This is a fairly accurate representation of the mall. I shop at the attached Target. The hope of the people on the Far Eastside is that the new owners put some effort into it and revitalize it. The next closest mall is some distance away. My one wish, if they bring it back to life, is to have a book store in it. I have to travel a very long distance to get to a chain bookstore. Right now, I'd be happy with a used bookstore, maybe a Half Price Books.
This is one of the malls from my childhood. I used to live in Indianapolis in my elementary school years. I also remember Eastgate and Lafayette Square. I think my parents bought stuff for our home from Sears and some of our clothing from the other stores in the mall. Osh Kosh, Lazarus, Stride Rite and Kit n Caboodle were ones I remember as well. Eastgate is the other one I visited a lot as well. I heard that one closed a while ago and today the building has been repurposed as a data center company called Lifeline Data Centers. Might be interesting someday to visit one that has been converted to another purpose. I am guessing that S&I video store was possibly a Radio Shack at one time based on the design of the fixtures.
Why don’t these centres have a supermarket, greengrocer and butchers on site. How odd, no wonder there is nothing to draw crowds. Come to Australia to see how a shopping mall works. All are busy everyday, with any undertaking multi million dollar upgrades. This on top of online shopping which is also popular here.
Grew up and live a mile away from Washington Square. I will say the Far East side of Indy is better than the near Eastside, but it was just a matter of time before this place went downhill with the violence spreading farther out. The neighborhoods are getting worse too. Used to be a relatively safe place to live. It’s a shame... The McDonald’s that used to be there was pretty rad though.
@@dvferyance from what I understand, they've got fairly good occupancy, but nothing name brand and no anchors. I still aint going over there...locally its known as Lafayette Scare.
it can get sketchy! In fact, that is a major reason the mall has fallen apart. The area has slowly gotten rundown so this led to an increase in crime which meant a lot of the mall’s business stores closing down.
Wow!!! This is the mall I grew up on during it's heyday of the mid 70's and 80's. I grew up and went to school on the east side of Indianapolis. It started declining in the late 90's. Today, its a sad shell of it's former self. I had many fond memories there.
Ahhh, Billy Idol. That great song transports me directly back to the 1980s and I love it! Love your videos and informative commentary. ☑️. Hello from me in Australia. 🙋🏻♂️
I worked at that Mall back in the mid 1980s and it was so clean and beautiful. It was busy all the time day and night with customers. It's a shame that it's gone to waste now.😢😢 watching this video brought back ALOT of old memories of it.
Eric Capshaw It’s all still there hidden behind a plain white wall that is on right side at the 5:00 minute mark. . The 1800’s saloon style in far back, the 1900 ‘s old Hollywood middle and what’s left of the modern 2000 front section. Covered in dust.
The old McD's is now a restaurant called Cumberland Grill. It's actually pretty good. I had picked up a couple Uber orders from there, the people were nice and food always smelled really good so I gave it a shot. It's worth a try.
I remember that being one of my favorite places as a kid. There was a strange area in the front section...I thought of it as a changing booth....and I was always afraid that Ronald McDonald was going to come out of it. The restaurant was always jam packed with people for the first few years it was open.
Ace, the "Idol" opening was cool AF. Most definitely my favorite BL song. That said, I really enjoyed the tour of the retro gem. The traces of the original pastel throughout the mall are really cool. It's too bad the waterfall was shut off. Back in the day, it must have been a sight to see. Oh and thx for giving us a quick tour of Shirley's shop. It looks like a fun place to check out.
In 1985 l use to work here. I left to join the Navy. So sad to see Lafayette and the Washington Square Malls fade away. I never imagined this would be. Love the intro and the song that was playing midway.
Just a quick note, I grew up here in Indianapolis and am stil here. When the mall was built, Lazarus was not part of the original opening of the mall and the structure had not been built yet to accommodate that store. It came about in the 1980’s and was later torn down in order to accommodate dicks sporting goods.
Awesome coverage here! You should've checked out that Target -- it's one of the last "P97" style ones with the squiggly neon and color coded directories! Of course, doesn't open into the mall.
This is a personal one for me. I grew up all over town, but we started west with Lafayette Square. Eastgate was it in my teens (no other kids hung in there, I was a nerd). Once Eastgate demalled, there was Glendale (loved Glendale! So of course they demalled to. I tried Washington Square and while it was fine for what I wanted, it would never be, say, Union Station (RIP homie) or Circle Centre. Sorry I didn't know you were coming our way, I'd treated you to some good old Hoosier Hospitality!
I remember I used to come here numerous times as a kid. I would always tell my parents to go to the mall because I remember there was a GameStop. Sad seeing the mall turn out like that.
I used to go here with my dad all the time in the early 2000s. The way the mall has infilled with local shops might seem weird, but a lot of people in the community are really supportive of the idea. The issue of safety is far more perceived than it is real.
Washington Square is indeed pretty sad (Indianapolis resident here). Last time I was in there was like 7-8 years ago, and it was less than 50% occupied at the time.
Ace,I love the way you cover malls.I know Dan Bell covered Regency Square here in Jacksonville Florida but I would really love to see YOUR take on it,as I feel you are a bit more thorough with the malls. My 7 year old ghost haunts it with my mother every Saturday.Promise if you go,I'll wave to you...
This was my mall where I hung out for hours upon hours in the 80’s. Ferrell’s Ice cream parlor (where the John Taylor from Duran Duran worked), the awesome arcade where I played Galaga and Centipede for hours, McDonald’s, Claire’s, LS Aryers (so fancy then), Sam Goody’s… oh the memories!!! Really wild that these malls end up like this. Really sad.
Excited to see your video on Eastland Mall. Interested in hearing your thoughts and assessment. Wish I had known you’d be in the area, as I would have offered to buy you lunch!
I had memories of that place. KB Toys, Gamestop, a karate studio, Boss Battle Games, and Prideland Comics. Plus my relatives owned some businesses there. Unfortunately all five of them are no longer there.
A lot of my formative years in the '90s happened at Washington Square. I was a church kid and used to be taken to the MCL cafeteria every Sunday afternoon. My first "real" job (not paid off the books construction) was at the Dollar Zone here in 1999 I believe it was. They had a Hot Topic and an EB Games. I used to go to the Disc Replay store in one of the strip malls in the parking lot to get used CDs and Games. The year before Sears closed we bought a washing machine there. When I was really little we'd shop at the anchor stores like L.S. Ayres, and a few times I got to go to the arcade and go-kart track across Washington street from the mall. Lots of memories, most of them very good.
Finally! I grew up going here back when L.S.Ayres and Lasarus were still there. I haven’t been in ages since there’s nothing left, but it’s cool to see if what it looks like now! I’m not surprised how empty it is with the crime in the area.
Kohan, Moonbeam, and Namdar: why do they sound like villains from a bad sci fi movie? Does Ace need to steal a sword from the abandoned Sears to slay these 3 beasts?
I came here in the early 2000s to buy a western shirt and cowboy hat for a band I had joined. The place was like a ghost town even then. Epic intro, btw.
I would definitely shop at S & I Video. The mom & Pop businesses are worthy of our support. The trip with Sal should be very interesting. I look forward to viewing them. 👍 😆

Glad you are making it to Knoxville Center. Haven't been there in years. It was a nice place in its heyday. Since I live 20 miles west of Knoxville...it's hard to make it there.
I live in Indy. I wish I knew you where coming I could have joined you guys. But of course you didnt know. Let me know next time you are in the Indy area. Great video.
Also you should go to Lafayette square , located in Lafayette Indianapolis it’s a pretty large mall that’s very nostalgic to the late 80s and 90s , it’s a ghost town now, not many archer stores just mom an pops shops !
Great video. Just found this. I grew up going to that mall. It's pretty to sad to see because I remember going there as a little kid in the late 90s and Early 2000s and this place was booming. B Dalton book store was my favorite has a kid and now it's a wireless store. Dick's and Burlington went out of business a little over a month after you posted this video. Target is the only anchor left now.
What gets me is that none of these malls had a supermarket, butchers and fruit and vegetables outlets. Just purely retail, not even a decent food court with quality fast food outlets. Malls are thriving in Australia, with all those ingredients on site under the one roof. Many centres expanding and my local is usually packed every weekend and no more so coming in to Christmas..
WSM UPDATE: Dick's Sporting Goods & Burlington have just announced the closure of their anchors. At the end of January, Target will be the only major anchor in the mall (though the mall entrance is closed so technically speaking, WS has no more anchors). Malls are great in Saigon, Vietnam. Full of traffic and events. Virtual reality arcades, semi famous celebrities that no one heard off, etc. If you want to re-live the 1980s American mall dream, go there.
The Caldor Rainbow It’s better now. The former property manager only had one housekeeper working seven days a week. It’s way better now under new ownership.
There needs to be gun detectors in all entrances before entering the building. I know about this place because I grew up in Indianapolis, IN all my life there. And, I know how it’s unsafe going there
I worked at the Lids at the Circle Centre Mall for a while and had to help out at this mall’s location. You are 100% correct they do not care about that mall. Lids hasn’t been HatWorld in years but for some reason that mall still has “HatWorld” signs. Somebody just needs to come in and care really.
Just a thought. I wonder what happen to the Knoxville Center Mall because West Towne Mall also in Knoxville is thriving. My guess would be the loss of all of it's anchors. I haven't been there since 2006 and it was crowded and almost fully developed. With hardly any empty spaces. Enjoy your visit.
Grew up in that area in the '60s and '70s and what happened is that good-paying jobs like Ford International Harvester Chrysler and many others are gone. I was in town visiting and it's not the same anymore I don't think I will ever go back again.
I live just over an hour away..... we use to hit washington square but years ago (4ish) it started getting alot of kids walking around (14/18 year olds) , started feeling unsafe getting yelled at, fussed at,asked for money... police cars seemed like they were always arriving... I love burlington... btw Target was nice their but still felt unsafe in parking lot during the evening.. The mall had a cute play area though... Nice to see it's still open...but did they control kids hanging??
Glad the play area is still their. Didnt see alot of teens but still we stopped feeling safe... We go to Fairfield, ohio now Bridgewater's falls... it's doing well
Come to richmond, indiana the mall is hanging.. had an ef1 tornado take out Penny's and office mack but they did get reopened... lots of wall space where store fronts use to be... Debs,,, and others .. tge mall is still hanging but hopefully it will turn and prosper...
You should go to Marion Indiana and check out 5 points mall. When I was a kid, it was a very busy place. Now they have a Rose's store, planet fitness, and Applebees. Last anybody heard it is going to be turned into a veterans college.
Wait, so even if the mall gets a store that could successfully anchor it, the store can just close their mall entrance so it's not a mall store anymore? What would be so advantageous to a store that it wouldn't want at least the trickle of people coming in from the mall?
That song brings me back to my high school days in the 80s singing to Idol and other artists. That mall looks like it's stuck in the 80s and early 90s. Sad but the local businesses are helping. Also maybe the future of the mall is turning it back to an outdoor mall. With Target and Dicks mall entrances closing that could be the solution. But they must keep Shirleys video store. People do collect those movies.
I didn't know that there was a Washington square Mall in Indianapolis Indiana I wonder if it still there and opened let me know I like to see it plus it looks better than ours
Eastland Mall is right up the street from me. But I never shop there. Its in a high crime area and the Mall is somewhat dead. As far as what i considered a dead mall. Looking forward to your video of Eastland Mall!
I was last in Washington Square in November of 2018 to visit Boss Battle Games, a retro arcade. They moved to the constantly busy Castleton Square Mall shortly after because Washington Square brought no business and the mall owners wouldn't let them expand into any of the empty units that made up the entire rest of the wing the arcade was in.
At 15:41, that asian restaurant is garbage. Overpriced everything. Rangoons were still frozen in the middle, the rice was mushy, the soda was flat and very syrupy.
Here’s a suggestion - include some more healthy malls. You did this with the Toronto Easton Centre and suburban Oakville Place. Why not take another quick run north of the border and check out Square One in Mississaauga and Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke. Both are very healthy and only about an hour or so north of the Border.
That would be neat to see. I grew up near Scarborough Town Center and worked there, 80s. I went back about 5 years ago and was scared. There were photos of the 70s displayed. It was amazing. Also clips on you tube of 70s STC.
The large group of kids hanging out and fights and guns patrons were scared to go to the mall It makes me so sick It was a wonderful place to go shop.Simon let this and Lafayette square go to pot
Durga owns two other notorious dead malls in Michigan: The Orchards in Benton Harbor and the former Cherryland Mall in Traverse City. Cherryland lost Sears, Kmart and Younkers (Bon Ton) in the past few years. The whole strip is pretty much a ghost town.
Ace, that intro is simply euphoric!

2:48 = BUZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!
6:22 Great Parents.
Great opening
I live just over an hour away..... we use to hit washington square but years ago (4ish) it started getting alot of kids walking around (14/18 year olds) , started feeling unsafe getting yelled at, fussed at,asked for money... police cars seemed like they were always arriving...
I love burlington... btw
Target was nice their but still felt unsafe in parking lot during the evening..
Last anybody heard it is going to be turned into a veterans college.
are you going to Lafayette Square mall?

JP Draws Thank you so much
Christopher Boyle No problem
JP Draws how did you find that song on youtube
Wait, so even if the mall gets a store that could successfully anchor it, the store can just close their mall entrance so it's not a mall store anymore? What would be so advantageous to a store that it wouldn't want at least the trickle of people coming in from the mall?
I heard that, at least in Target's case, it had to due with a dispute they had with Kohan.
SoCalWill Dicks sporting goods doesn’t have the staff to man the registers at mall entrance so they closed it off.
Still open
@@michaelwayne1977 thanks for letting me know 😊
6:25 Um, did the kid ever find his parents?
IKR??!!
At 12:33, that popcorn shop is run by a very nice man selling some good popcorn.
My grandma use to go there all the time and now it’s a shadow of its former self very sad
13:20 ya boy in the background raising his arm just let you know he is okay under all them big ass boxes.
New owners as of two months ago. Really trying to fix it up. Many good mom and pop stores here
I live in Indy and I drive passed that place countless times
