I'm at baby step 6 at age 56. I started all of this late and will probably never be a millionaire but I'm oh so much safer going into retirement. I'm paying off my house gazelle intensely. I plan to have it done in ten years. My three side hustles are all really fun things I'd do even if they didn't make me money so they feel effortless. You are so fun!

@@TheRealLydiaSenn I'm going to be the sole flower vendor at a small farmers market this spring. All the flowers come from my urban mini farm. I make commissioned mosaic tables and once a month I spend a weekend doing data entry for my best friend who is a book keeper. We work in her kitchen and talk and eat all weekend. I've got a great steady job but require all side hustles to be fun, things that bring me joy, feed my soul. When I was in debt I did lots of overtime. But now it's going to be ten years so it has to be sustainable.

Overspending on groceries!!! I now ‘hired’ my husband to do the grocery shopping. For him, it’s black and white--it has to be on the list to be purchased. I seem to lack that gene and overspent at the grocery store every single time by big margins.

Doing ok over here. My husband and I had started the steps a while back and we are now getting divorced. Not ideal, but I couldn’t be happier that we not only have money in savings to split to start our lives individually, but that 90% of our debt is gone. Will it take a little longer by myself? Absolutely, but I know I can do it. Your pep talks on a Monday morning are wonderful ❤️

Loretta Carroll Loretta sounds like we’re both in the same place. My husband says it’s sad how when you reach a certain age it’s expected that you will be replaced with someone in their 20’s in the tech industry. That’s why he feels so strongly about saving up 8 months of expenses. Being frugal & meal planning has helped us so much to save money.

Your content is really just amazing. We just had our first baby and paused baby step two to go into stork mode. I decided to not go back to my higher paying job so I could work a lower paying job and be with the baby. We’re using our child tax credit and our stork mode to pay off the last bit of student loan and then we will be debt free and have $5,000 leftover in savings to start baby step three. Our baby step three will be slow going because of my reduced income, but we will be debt free! I’m interested in content related to sinking funds, working on baby step three with reduced income, and saving money as a mom. Thanks Lydia!

I'm back in college and watching our debt go up because there is no other way for us right now to pay for childcare during student teaching is hard. We paid off the majority of debt we had when we first got married and saved up for a baby. Baby came, extra medical expenses for both baby and I (we're good now), my car was totaled in an accident so this last year and half we have been a 1 car family to save up for this upcoming semester knowing we'd need a 2nd car and childcare this year. We'll get there, and watching your videos, remembering we aren't alone, having a few close friends who GET IT and don't get mad when we once again suggest potluck or a free event or our house so we don't need a sitter. Trust me, I'm not this much of a homebody but a sitter is expensive so we're not getting a sitter for any old event, nope. Winter is the hardest since there is a lot more we can do in nicer weather and can get to walking in Chicagoland than right now.

We are at the end of our snowball. Only one more debt then the house. Our mortgage is very low. $665 includes all. We have a higher emergency fund because we are a family of 6. We’ve snowballed so many things over the last few years with cash. New septic, furnace, AC, vehicle, washer, dryer, fridge and dishwasher.

Just starting to budget this month and I feel so overwhelmed. We just paid things as we had money and put out the fires as we could before. By the time we get our modest amount of debt paid it will be 2 years or so and all the numbers say that we will then be 2 years late to be able to live of a ROTH IRA if we max it out. One income and it just won't stretch. We were already doing a lot to make our cost of living lower (cloth diapers, doing things ourselves, cooking from scratch). We haven't completed our first real month on a budget yet and I'm ready to give up sometimes. My hubby thinks I'm silly to keep rerunning the numbers over and over. Trying to figure out how to do it better. we only have 230 dollars in our emergency savings and with taxes coming up and several other once a year things right now I feel like we are against a wall right now to get anywhere with the baby steps.

We, well I, finally sat down and looked at the last 5 months of last year to figure out what to call our monster. I had always felt like while everything carried on as normal we were still flying a bit close to the sun with our 'unknown' expenses, and had been for a bit. But mid last year my father in law passed and my husband being an only child is the only one to deal with the estate. It's bad. We now have a house out in the country that we haven't been able to sell even after making some much needed updates, so own and need to carry a second home that we don't even live in or get to enjoy. There is interest on an outstanding line of credit against the house, the basic utilities, taxes and insurance that we need to pay out of our budget until we can sell and settle the house.
The upside if you choose to squint hard enough to see it is that at least we know what we are up against now and how to manage the additional $1500 a month in expenses, and knowing we can actually do that WITHOUT going further into debt for now, means we actually had that much money in our budget that will become available for our own debt repayment once the estate is sorted. Right now it's all that keeps me going.

Hello from Texas Lydia. I'm watching this with my husband and we got to the part where you said "the next thing you know your house is flooded" and started laughing. I've shared my story of our flooded house during Harvey and Imelda. Luckily we are in a place where we can laugh. We just closed on our new house and will sell our flooded house soon. Thus ending a painful chapter . We will be debt free except our house by the end of 2020 and hopefully debt free including the house by 2022. You are so inspiring and motivating. Thank you for your uplifting message. Hugs from Houston ❤️

We're paying off a loan for our new kitchen - I know it's not ideal but we're renovating an old house and by doing the majority of the work ourselves it's saving us so much. We have a few rules for loans 1. It must be an amount we can pay back immediately with our emergency fund if needed. 2. Only one loan at a time 3. Only if necessary. (Our old kitchen was over 30 years old and falling apart. ) This helps us with cash flow for other big expenses (like dead washing machines and new exhausts 🙄) We are also making overpayments every month for our mortgage. 4 years ago we sold our 2 bedroom flat and bought a rundown 3 bedroom house with a big garden in a low cost area (and made a small profit👍) because we didn't see the point in having a huge mortgage. We've got pur monthly budget down to a fine art now too 👍 just need to keep on saving 😊 thank you! x x x

Then a pipe burst and flooded half the basement and, because the pipe was in the cement floor , it is outside the foundation and not covered by our home insurance. We are completely maxed, behind on everything. My medical insurance just agreed to pay (after a year of fighting) and I have just gotten back to work. Budget in his food. Just create a line item that says "this is how much you have to spend on food while driving." This will take the mystery out of it. If he still chooses to eat crap he's an adult but he has a budgeted amount for it.
