Small correction, both the SR+ LFP and the Long Range cells are lithium ion, just a different chemistry as you said. The Long Range chemistry is NCA (Nickel Cobalt Aluminum oxyde). LFP is lithium iron phosphate, which on top of wanting to be charged to 100% daily, is more sustainable as it doesn't use hard to mine and human rights dubious cobalt. I’ve done 2 Turo trips so far and made $2700. Didn’t have my car for all of July. I’m getting a ebike for when it’s being rented. The Turo negativity is real. I just think they don’t understand that Turo fully insures the car and you’re taking on far less risk that what it seems. You talked me into the RWD
The best Tesla is the one you really wish to have and that you can afford. If all you look at is the range, then stay with ICE vehicles until EVs can charge either faster or have a much longer range... or both. That is reality. I got a Model 3 Performance, upgraded the wheels, added gauges on the console, and put tint. I'm very happy with it, and is what I wanted to get and thankfully afford. You get to live once, enjoy life. Cheers
for like $60 you can upgrade your sound system with a harness from hansshow, gonna do it as soon as it arrives. tesla put all the front speakers in all models, just not the harness. the only speakers that are missing are 2 in the back and the sub I believe
I’m getting 300 miles a charge out of mine over summer. Check out my review but I’ve done since then 3 identical 287 mile range tests and arrived back with 5% each time. As to supercharging speeds, this has a better charging curve. At 80% charge it’s still pulling 70 KwH. In most markets, including UK, 99.9% of home chargers are 7KwH so the slight difference in home charging capability won’t effect most purchasers.
I think Turo is an awesome thing. For myself I just rented one to take a 500 mile trip for my honeymoon. It was gonna help me make a decision on if I were to purchase one and it was great. It was a 2019 standard range plus but range was no big deal and for my first electric vehicle I was surprised with the acceleration. Also the guy did have a few scratches on his but other than that the vehicle was awesome.
The SR or RWD is a great option if you really don't travel. The charging to 100% isn't really relevant when you can charge every day. And the base model doesn't charge at 250kW either, so if you do travel it charges slower. I think an extra 10k to get the LR is the best money spent.
The main point of daily 100% vs 90% is that it makes the difference in range not as dramatic. On a road trip, you rarely charge to 100% anyway, so you won't be using the extra range on either car. ABRP says RWD Model 3 Detroit to Boston takes 13 hours 16 minutes, where as LR takes 12 hours and 46 minutes, so a savings of 30 minutes.
RWD Doesn't need to charge at 250 kwh as it's a smaller battery and the vehicle is more efficient. Not to mention the charge curve seems to be better on the LFP pack, holding strong past 80% vs. the NCA packs. It's much closer than you would think.
@@brandonkienzler4842 I did not say they can't charge at lvl 3 superchargers. Where did I say that? They can't charge at 250kw. They can only charge at 170kw max. It's right on the Tesla website and in the car.
@@jasonfranciosa I thought that 250kw was the charging speed of the lvl 3 chargers, so I assumed they wouldn’t be able to charge there, but didn’t know if it could still do 170kw or not on those
The RWD Model 3 also has a much better ride than the long range. I drive my long range every day and occasionally get in my friend's SR and am always surprised by the smooth ride in theirs.
got mine last week, exact same build....loving it! I was worried about the fit and finish, but (knock on wood) it seems perfectly clean with no issues. :)
Yeah!!! I got one. of these LFP battery I get to charge to 100%. Longer life for battery by design. Yes it’s more efficient. It’s got plenty of power, I took my Model 3 thru a High G turn and naturally I loss my 95 score, I love speed, I have a racing license with SCCA. People paid $20,00 to watch me back in the day 1978. Damn car handles so be warned, ant turn greater than 0.3 G will get your score to be penalize. What you expect I had to put the car thru it’s pace. i set fastest lap time a Sears Point Raceway and Laguna Sega in Calif. Great car
I have a 2022 RWD Model 3, picked it up last December. It is the best 'value' proposition. You get the same tech and upholstery that you would get in the higher trims and in Model Y for significantly less. All the tech is there as well. That's not the case with any other automaker. If you don't need the Y's space (and honestly ask yourself if that's worth 20k) or don't have a desire to feel a punch to the gut when you floor the LR/Performance, the RWD is the best car to buy. 272 miles of range that you can charge to 100% is more than enough, I've never once had range anxiety. Oh and I believe the RWD has the best MPGe rating, so it is the most efficient car.
Chris, RETROFIT the NVH Cowl Flaps on your 2018 Model 3, it will blow your mind at highway speeds, as they almost completely eliminate front windshield wind noise 🙂 Our 2019 LR RWD we also retrofited with them, and the first ride on the Autobahn produced an actual wind noise hole from the front...
@@DirtyTesla The NVH Cowl Flaps (yes, those two things at the windshield edge of the Model 3 frunk lid) are only a Model 3 thing, as Model Y should have done away with the wind noises from that area from the get-go. At least I hope so 🙂 I doubt they would be mountable on the Model Y frunk lid also... But they only cost a few Dollars, so it might be worth a try.
LFP are misunderstood by the US. They’re absolutely stunning, summer or winter. I noticed a 3% more needed when around 5 Celsius degrees but that does not impact you that much on your daily driving. These LFPs do not get credit they deserve in the US… And keep in mind you’re less charging on these (less time needed is what I mean), at Superchargers or at home. So do not bother about the 175 max Kw/h. More than enough. Too bad you just discover them in the US.
you forgot to add the stability and trilling of driving a 4WD on sharp turns, the scenarios of driving in the snow or mud and so on. If you are a car lover you can feel the difference between a 4x2 and a 4x4 is tremendous! Sure for a daily commute, this will be good but try to go on holidays skiing without a 4x4.
I have the 55kwh LFP SR+ and I agree it's such a good value car. I've had no problems in the UK winter with the batteries slow charging, etc. On road trips i only have to charge for 15 mins then I'm on my way for the next 2 - 3 hours. The music sounds good in the front but not so good in the back...
I live in the south. To bad there isn't AC seats. I would have rather had those instead of the heated seats 💺. It gets really 🔥 hot here! Not to cold. Now that would have been a luxury.
But if you live in a place that has snow and ice in January. then it can be good with four-wheel drive. And if it had been constant four-wheel drive, it would probably also have meant less wear on the tires
Crazy how much the prices have increased. My 2019 LR RWD with FSD was $50,950 after the tax rebate (got half, $3,750). To duplicate my car today with the RWD would be $9,490 more and $20,490 more for the LR AWD. And I had to pay $1,500 for MSM and $3k for Auto Pilot.
that not how it works :D Long Range has more KWH aorund 78. Standard has 60 KWH. The battery has the same volume. LFP is not as energy dense as NCA/NMC batteries.
Looking at possibly buying a Tesla and after looking at the models available the basic RWD model 3 standard range seems the be the best bang for your buck.. I have been considering... Model 3 standard range RWD Model Y standard range RWD Model Y long range AWD
Thank you for making this video. I was originally interested in a model 3 long range because I wanted the AWD for the winter. How has your experience been driving your RWD teslas in that Michigan snow?
Well we just got it, so I don't know yet. I will say, Tesla's traction control is out of this world and I don't think it will be a problem. Put some snow tires on it and I'd bet big money that RWD+Snow Tires will handle better than AWD+All Season Tires
Chris, The RWD Model 3 is a great value. I did not realize how much equipment it has nowdays until I saw this video. Good luck with your Turo renting, I will be interested to see your videos about it. Are you going to get ceramic coat for your 3? That would make clean up between renters a lot faster and easier. PPF for the front might be a good investment as well.
Thanks! I'm conflicted on any of those treatments. There is a touch less car wash within 2 minutes of where I park the car, so I don't mind just running there.
@@DirtyTesla PPF on the front will protect from stone chips, helping resale value when the time comes, if you sell privately. Ceramic coat will make the touchless wash more effective removing bugs, and make the car look better. For the most part, renters will take better care of a spotless car vs. one that is superficially clean. However, I am not sure it is worth the money or not. Self applied PPF for just the bumper, and self applied ceramic coat are cost saving options if you have the time.
@8:46 You need no correcting. The real drive doesn't come with floor mats that's one of the main differences. Also fog lights and super charging speed. On the real drive it's a little slower
I lean towards the m3 LR because in my area we need awd. I also lean away from the m3P because it comes with summer only tires and we get multiple feet of snow near me
Ok, it's official. I'm an idiot. I've owned my Tesla for almost a year and until I watched this video, I just assumed that my M3 SRP trunk could only be opened by using the touch screen inside the car or via the app. Sigh.
@@chidorirasenganz :-) Trunk. Not frunk. Although, there actually is another way to open the frunk which is through the towing port on the front left bumper. You apply a certain voltage to the two wires that are exposed when you open that port. The idea is that the frunk can be opened if the car has no power.
I suspect most Tesla buyers just aren’t price sensitive. I would prefer the higher seating position and hatch of Mod Y but the 3 is much more affordable. Tesla should make the base Mod 3 their $25k model as battery cost halves.
You'd be surprised. Many people stretch their budget for a Tesla way more than they would another vehicle. Taking $10k off can make a huge difference. My most expensive vehicle before my Tesla was a $12k Ford Focus lol
interesting video - i actually hadnt appreciated the value you now get in the rear drive model 3. Its crazy, but looking at the estimated range on the tesla website - the standard starts at more range on delivery than I now currently get in my Model 3 P (2019)... out of interest, how have your white seats been holding up? I use towels in the back and seat protectors in the front, combined with ceramic coating which has really helped. Would love to see you do a video on how well (or not) your white seats have/are holding up!
I'm definitely one that doesn't like Turo, unless the vehicle(s) being rented out are specifically owned for the purpose of renting. I'd have to check out how insurance works if I were to do it.
Great video Chris, I ordered almost the exact same car in early May, except mine is black interior. I ordered it for Turo use as well! Curious to see how it goes for you and thank you for taking us along that particular journey. You noted that a charger came with it, but did it also come with the matrix headlights? If it did, that would be icing on the cake.
@@DirtyTesla Ah dang it. Oh well, you touched on a lot of the strong points of why the RWD is a great value Tesla. You touched on tires for a moment, have you shopped Michelin Cross Climate 2’s? I have them on my Leaf and they are FANTASTIC all season tires. Great video! I just ordered this today. First EV! Estimated delivery for us is Oct-Dec. Do you think we should delay until January to try and get the new 2023 tax credit?
However, I think the Tesla 3 is a bit low above the ground, it might not be so good if you are going to drive out in the country where there is gravel and stone and unfortunately it cannot be raised like a Tesla S. It is probably not good if gravel and stones hit under the battery

FYI, the Tesla Roadside Safety Kit is back in stock. $65. Won't last long. Loaded with important stuff.
Where did you see that they can’t charge at lvl 3 superchargers?
@@brandonkienzler4842 I did not say they can't charge at lvl 3 superchargers. Where did I say that?
They can't charge at 250kw. They can only charge at 170kw max. It's right on the Tesla website and in the car.
@@jasonfranciosa I thought that 250kw was the charging speed of the lvl 3 chargers, so I assumed they wouldn’t be able to charge there, but didn’t know if it could still do 170kw or not on those
The charger comes with it if you placed the order before the end of June.
You are fortunate with your wait time....I ordered mine in October for delivery next week🙃.
Just bought one and love it! Very good video, you covered all bases!!
The RWD Model 3 also has a much better ride than the long range. I drive my long range every day and occasionally get in my friend's SR and am always surprised by the smooth ride in theirs.
are they on the same wheels? the difference could be between one being on 18'' and another on 19'' sport
Wheel size, tyres and weight are factors in comfort
Tire psi also matters, lower psi would be smoother ride.
my 22 M3 LR has the rizen chip and the console USB C ports are power only, LR comes with floor mats
got mine last week, exact same build....loving it! I was worried about the fit and finish, but (knock on wood) it seems perfectly clean with no issues. :)
1:42 This is why you're my favorite youtuber lol
1:30 this is hilarious this is why you're my favorite youtuber
Yeah!!! I got one. of these LFP battery I get to charge to 100%.
This is the things under the frunk? I no longer own the 2018 Model 3, but my Model Y doesn't have those so I could do it there.
Just ordered mine hopefully will be here by December 23 thank you for your videos
Cool! Next time I visit Ann Arbor, I will check Turo for sure!
Email me I'll get you set up if you need the car
LFP is nice i really love my 2022 RWD in EU
You got the low voltage Lithium Ion too 💪
The build quality does look very much improved
A rear wheel drive model 3 would be great money maker for Turo 💪🏽
I'm getting mine this week!
Enjoy!
I live in the south. To bad there isn't AC seats. I would have rather had those instead of the heated seats 💺. It gets really 🔥 hot here! Not to cold. Now that would have been a luxury.
I have my music drive in the glove box. Had to get a USB hub to make that happen with my sentry ssd
Just give it to Tailosive EV until his car comes, he ordered the same variant 😁
Btw Chris, I've had some strange FSD drives recently. Perfection - truly an A+ - punctuated by one or two strange swerves or hard phantom brakes.
Hey Chris, Great content again. Thanks! Greetings from Hungary!
I wish the model y LR would come with the LFP
that not how it works :D Long Range has more KWH aorund 78. Standard has 60 KWH. The battery has the same volume. LFP is not as energy dense as NCA/NMC batteries.
the model 3 Performance is the best bang for your buck performance car that money can buy.
I agree. I drive my daughter’s standard range model 3. Is not quite though. Noisy.
Thanks for this. Really good explanation.
Looking at possibly buying a Tesla and after looking at the models available the basic RWD model 3 standard range seems the be the best bang for your buck..
I have been considering...
Model 3 standard range RWD
Model Y standard range RWD
Model Y long range AWD
Very wise information, I think you are absolutely right. 👍
@8:46 You need no correcting. The real drive doesn't come with floor mats that's one of the main differences. Also fog lights and super charging speed. On the real drive it's a little slower
The rear window heating elements are different, they use to be a upside down U and the rear speakers had a triangle shaped grill
Honestly my choice of LR vs SR had less to do with the range and more to do with the AWD. I didn't feel comfortable with RWD in the winter.
I have one on order for 🇦🇺. Good information here for a new owner.
I have a 2022 lfp and it's amazing
Love the hustler mindset, gotta make that cash 💸
It's out there just gotta find it!
I lean towards the m3 LR because in my area we need awd. I also lean away from the m3P because it comes with summer only tires and we get multiple feet of snow near me
The Y has been coming with all season on the performance. Maybe they'll do the same for the 3 soon
@@DirtyTesla hopefully 👍
Same car was 40k just a year ago so hard sell on paying 48k for the same car now. Slower 170kw charging also sucks.
Everything is more expensive. If you do drive 50 miles a day, it is worthwhile.
Thank you for the very informative review! How does A/C and heater affect the distance the car makes on a single charge?
Ok, it's official. I'm an idiot. I've owned my Tesla for almost a year and until I watched this video, I just assumed that my M3 SRP trunk could only be opened by using the touch screen inside the car or via the app. Sigh.
Wait what other method can you open the frunk?
@@chidorirasenganz :-) Trunk. Not frunk. Although, there actually is another way to open the frunk which is through the towing port on the front left bumper. You apply a certain voltage to the two wires that are exposed when you open that port. The idea is that the frunk can be opened if the car has no power.
@@russellthorburn9297 ahh I was gonna say if there was another way besides what you mentioned I would have been shocked 😂
Good breakdown.
I am conflicted. I want the car from the German Factory because I am German. But they only make y and I would prefer 3.
Guessing you got a canceled reservation and that is why you got the car so fast and also got the mobile connector
interesting video - i actually hadnt appreciated the value you now get in the rear drive model 3.
Sure thing. They look great still in my 1 year old Model Y which I did ceramic coat once when I first got it.
It not cheap but it has all the feature im looking for😊
Great video...thank you.
I'd be interested in the winter range of the LFP batteries. Theoretically, they take a bigger hit than LiOn. Let us know!
It's well mitigated with pre-conditioning the battery.
I wish they had an acceleration boost for this as well.
Looking at the pics I took for Turo, no matrix headlights.
I thought about grabbing a set for the Model 3 and just keeping those on instead of the stock tires, especially when renting (trying help mitigate the possibility of weather related traction accidents as much as I can on my end😂)
The problem with Tesla is some of the minor designs such as the sunroof cannot close from hot sun. That's one of the big issues
Great video! I just ordered this today. First EV! Estimated delivery for us is Oct-Dec. Do you think we should delay until January to try and get the new 2023 tax credit?
I think you can switch the screens
But if you want maximum grip when accelerating, you should probably have four-wheel drive
1:30 that $10k also includes AWD and better performance.
Hows the bulid quality reagrding your car , any issues with the panel gaps or closing doors , where its assembled ?
I sold this car, but no, all the panel gaps and that typical "Tesla stuff" was perfect on his car.
However, I think the Tesla 3 is a bit low above the ground, it might not be so good if you are going to drive out in the country where there is gravel and stone and unfortunately it cannot be raised like a Tesla S. It is probably not good if gravel and stones hit under the battery
