Cheers for all the cool comments guys. Glad you like this series of vids & I hope it helps anyone trying to decide on a new Les Paul. Only 2 more to go now!!
The moment Lee messed around with the Tone knobs I knew this guitar was loaded with Orange Drop caps, checked the specs and I was correct. Great example of how much better Orange Drop caps are compared to Ceramic Disk caps.
Is it me or is this one of the best les Paul videos ever. Rocking playing. Perfect. Yes the best jam you done guys. Brilliant. Inspired by the axes me thinks.
Holy CRAP! I had to pause it just to stare at that Seafoam green for I think a solid minute. I'd buy that guitar just for the color if I could afford to.
I love my 94 classic 60s neck hot 496r 500t pickups and the fancy shocker case. Mines got a silk blanket that shrouds the guitar though. In the words of borat...very nice!
I have a Trad Pro II in Merlot with a 50s neck, it is an awesome guitar! Really pleased to see Gibson have a similar one in the catalog this year. The boost is very useable with a valve amp, and the 57 pickups are lovely. Especially the neck on the clean channel. Looking forward to trying a 14 Classic to compare them!
Lee i know that your a strat guy but do yourself a favor and buy that one for yourself! I've seen every video you guys have ever done and this is the best ive ever heard you play. That guitar makes you play skanky !
You can set any Gibson to get you a boost at the flick of a switch by running on pick up on full and the other on half. Play in the middle position for your rhythm and switch it to the pickup on 10 for your leads. I use that quite a lot!
Think Chappers is totally right Cap that was some of the best soloing ive heard from you dude. Was epic mate keep up the epic vids guys! Andertons and Dorje rawk!! \m/ \m/ \m/
You said about the binding, maybe they make it so that you can feel the string touch it so you know how far you can bend before the string will pull off the fretboard?
3:27 that close-up shot was amazing. Please do more of your videos in this style and get rid of the fixed camera position. It looks so beautiful and in some way makes us feel more involved. Thanks.
@martin Oliver Yes you can tap the humbucker in the bridge on these. It's called a 57 super and has take offs from the end of coil wire as always and another partial way through the coil. And yes I know the true diff in tap/ split. That is tapping, though they also have splitters on this axe as well.
That segment on the the binding and frets was a revelation for me. Lots of times when going back to play a les paul after playing my tele I initially choke the high e string when I'm vibratoing. I thought it had something to do with the neck width (which may still be true) but now it could also be the frets! The question is why has it taken this long for Gibson to change their design?
11:38 Yes it really was the best I've heard from you! Sounded Great!! Maybe it was the 6,4,5 Lol I can hardly distinguish between the Middle and the Rhythm tones during your solo. Which is fine because I love the Rhythm tone best!
I changed the boost switch for a tone knob . Not because i disliked it but i did wanted an traditional looking Les Paul.(read :4 knobs). Fact is , this is an amazing guitar in every aspect . Tone, playability and looks (for me anyway) Thats why i changed it .
How did you do it? Any instruction online? I am thinking of doing the same thing. What I do like about the boost is that it really helps when coil spliting
facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.824091564324980.1073741833.821629307904539&type=3 Through this page i received useful info . I payed 98 ero's and could pick the guitar up the same day .
Chappers: "I've got one camo pick left"... Captain: "... I can't see it"... -enjoyed the quick wit. actually made me laugh out loud. Nice review chaps, keep it up. Cheers from the west coast u.s.
I believe that the nib removal is a cost cutting move. If correctly done you shouldn't really notice. Also, for 62 years they've had it wrong? I don't think so.
Cap'10, Chapper's right...great jam! Probably your best lead ever.....G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S. guitar, excellent tone (?) - get the ML-9 to be a carved top, Jazzmaster style, this color, 2 humbuckers git, and I'm game
I was looking to just pickup another Explorer or SG this year....but I'm thinking the Classic is a possibility. I'll have to play one through an Orange then figure it out!
I wonder if that boost switch could be changed to a second tone. I’ve got a 2014 and it didn’t bother me when I bought it but now? I never use the boost( it’s too much I think) and I just miss that 4th knob. Anyone got experience with this?
I also own a 2014 Classic. I haven't done any mods yet but yes you can absolutely change it to a second tone knob. I have inquired about this with a local luthier. The hole needs to be enlarged to fit a tone pot. A skilled luthier should be able to do it without damaging the finish.
I have a 2014 Classic Cherry. In 2014 the standard came with the self tuning system so i finally got this one. Then i wanted a more traditional looking one but i realised this one was the only one i would ever play(it's fantastic).I started looking into changing the boost switch. Came across a FB page called "we want the traditional and classic back to its original glory"contacted the moderator who sended me a scheme how to do it. Brought it to a guitar tec and one day later i picked it up. payed 90 euros. later i put chrome covers on it and that's it. i truly love this guitar.
@@Hulkhoagie1 Hey thanks for the reply. I just watched this vid again and I thought he said you can adjust that boost level. Any idea how?Mine is way too hot. I’m playing clean on a Blues JR and hit that boost and it ODs the signal way too much. If I could adjust it I could probably live with it. I’ve got 4 other LPs with traditional tone/ vol anyway.
@@ec.1121 Thanks for getting back to me. I think I’ll leave it. I’ve got other LPs. But I do want to put covers on all my uncovered HBs. I used to like the uncovered look. I guess I’m really getting old. I find as far as choices out there you got overpriced and too cheap to be true options on covers. Any advice there?
thanks for the videos rob! very cool .but i would like to request a video demo and comparison. the obvious topic you havent touched yet which is the subtle differences in tone you get from playing good and drunk vs sober. thanks in advance...
Looking at one of these in 2021. I'd rip out all that garbage active wiring and replace it, but can't tell if the switch is in the right place when I replace it with a tone knob?
Who does bends/vibrato towards the edge of the fretboard? The norm is to move towards "more wood". I don't see where the problem is with bound frets. It will cost more to refret but that has nothing to do with playability.
Can someone please help me!!! Q. im interezted in buying the classic 2014 on gibsons website tge neck is listed as a slim 60's style and same on thomann, however on GAK and another big UK guitar online store its listed both as 50's roundex style neck. So whats the story here. Want to buy one but dont want a 50s neck want a slim 60s neck. Is it a misprint? Or are gibson making guitar with 2 different necks? Dont make sense
I actually own a Les Paul Classic - I'd say it's more of 60's style neck. I don't know whether or not they offer different necks within the range though, but mine is definitely a 60's. It's an amazing guitar, plays like a dream and sounds awesome, well worth the $2000 it cost.
verbw002 how about a tone knob on the treble. i love them too. tried one out. feels great to play on and sounds incredible.. but that tone knob missing and that useless midboost switch is really making me hesitate from buying one.
I saw pictures of this, and I wasn't a fan, I thought they swapped the second tone for coil tap or something silly that they could have just used a push pull pot for. But now that I know it's a boost, I am suddenly very interested in these.
yo guys i think it would be cool if you mentioned that every single model of guitar AND bass that Gibson produces this year (including the SG's) will be available in left handed configuration. - love from the southpaw side
Can you do a side by side comperison of the ESP LTD EC-256 Black and the Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro EB? - I'm looking for a Les Paul Custom(ish) guitar, and I don't have the money for a Gibson.
How about the other models? you say on the description you will cover all the new les pauls in 2014, but what about futura, signature, peace, standard plus and standard premium? they are missing from the categories in the end of the video, and It would be really nice to see reviews for futura and signature for example.
Great video again. Can't help feeling that if u r sliding your strings THAT close to the edge then you are only going to slide off the edge of the fret with a nasty ker-lung anyway! I think the overbound look has a certain feel of being more 'quality' build, but a re-fret means a rebind to a degree, so the new style is probably an improvement. I second the question on scratchplates below...
I'm with Gibson on this. Its much easier and cheaper to refret with the nibs. And its just the cosmetic thing. Fun fact : I read somewhere that the nibs were a mistake. It shouldn't be there at all.
I like this one! I think it's the best Les Paul out of the 2014 range you've showed yet. I'm really curious how the Les Paul Standard could possibly top this. I guess with a nicer flame top ... and of course the Standard will have it's own tone ... Anyways, in my humble opinion the features on the Classic are great, and this one has just about everything I could want in a Les Paul. Sounds good too.

CaptAnderton your rolex explorer also kinda cool 😊👍
This is infinitely better than TV
3:19 so funny how lee just sits there ALONE philosophizing about bindings
As Rob said, lee, very cool playing, very tasty...so cool playing.
The moment Lee messed around with the Tone knobs I knew this guitar was loaded with Orange Drop caps, checked the specs and I was correct. Great example of how much better Orange Drop caps are compared to Ceramic Disk caps.
Really sweet lead playing, Lee...
hahaha... you guys rock! And a legendary quote from The Captain: "like all the good things, brown on the outside and pink in the inside..."
Cap10 Lee for the win!!! :D

3:19 chappers has returned to his original form of a les paul
Lee, your tone is freakin' unbelievable.
Awesome playing, Capt. Lee
The binding over the frets was one of the indicators as to whether a new one was fake, or whether an older one had had a fret job done.
Hahaha, my MIJ Tokai Les Paul already has the frets over the binding, before Gibson thought of doing it. Damn I love my Tokai
Great playing from Lee.
Just bought one last night 2014 model. No horrifying Gforce. Brand new 1800 Canadian. Couldn't walk by it. I love it.

Sweet jam guys! And nice guitars!
Can't believe the shocker came out!
My mistake. 1,4,5 You guys made that sound Great!
Re the fret binding, Epiphone frets are over. Just thought I'd mention it ;)
think I'm sold on the LP Classic!!! I just need to get some pickup covers...
That studio pro is beautiful
Great playing! :)
Best sounding guitars for a while! Amazing guitars man!

where did the 2014 les paul standard video go on this channel, I bought this guitar after seeing this video?
Capt'n sounds so much better in E than in A. Plus that LP Classic sounded amazing and the boost wasn't bad either.

What is the guitar at 00:00 first in to the left, right next to the guy on the right's head? anyone know?
That is A Gibson Les Paul J 2014 with cherry stain
Sorry I meant the Goldtop
I'm guessing the boost requires a battery and in effect turns the pickups into actives? Very cool either way!
Chappers you and the Captain should record some blues-rock songs.

Have you thought about doing wireless instrument leads?
That's why those Gibson cases are nicknamed California Girls - brown on the outside, pink on the inside :-)
So...Les Paul Classic has a Vintage style head. Is that means the size of head is a bit smaller than Les Paul Standard?
Honestly, what is the point of the binded frets?
Any explanation?
I'm with Gibson on this. Its much easier and cheaper to refret with the nibs. And its just the cosmetic thing. Fun fact : I read somewhere that the nibs were a mistake. It shouldn't be there at all.
What color is that classic? On Gibson's website it seems like the colors are a bit faded but this looks fantastic so I NEED to know!
Looks like the vintage sunburst to me. Think of getting one myself!
Andreas Toh thanks man it does look awesome!
It's tobacco sunburst - not sure what they're calling it now...
What's the song right a the end of the vid? Is it a rob chapman song, sounds like his voice
If I went for LP, I reckon this one would be just right. Binding, looks, tapping, mahagony, price (for an LP), and who really needs two tone controls
I like this one! I think it's the best Les Paul out of the 2014 range you've showed yet. I'm really curious how the Les Paul Standard could possibly top this. That's awesome, thanks!
Thanks man, that's awesome! Appreciate the help.
got one in vintage sunburst delivered today, waiting for me at home, while I work. clock. needs. to. go. faster.
The only reason Gibson ditched the over fret edge binding on these models is manufacturing cost.
It's two in the pink and one in the stink, that why it's called the shocker!
The Les Paul is in my opinion is simply the best guitar ever, but I feel like Gibson should had left the 2nd tone control and made it a push/pull
I have this model. I do miss the separate tone, especially as it is particularly bright when the single tone is rolled open. I do like the extra dbs when activating the on board boost. You can punch up your leads and keep the same tone as it provides enough boost without hitting a extra pedal. I do not use the push pull on stage often as it does not change phase, merely switches from a dual to a single coil sound but it sounds good recording on some things. Love this guitar, my main Les Paul. I also have a 2014 R8, and they sound and play differently. I enjoy the r8 more, but I use the Classic far more often.
i'd love to see lee do a review and do an awesome jam like he just did then suddenly smash the thing for an ending out of the blue :D
