According to Cooks Info, the sandwich came from the "Monte Cristo Hotel in Everett, Washington... The hotel itself was named after the Monte Cristo mining region in the Cascades Mountains. The sandwich, though, actually seems to predate that incarnation of the hotel. We have found references to the sandwich as early as 1923... well before the Croque Monsieur [in 1943]."

1910 - Most food historian generally think that the Monte Cristo sandwich is a variation of a French dish called Croque Monsieur. This original grilled cheese sandwich consisted of Gruyere cheese and lean ham between two slices of crust-less bread, fried in clarified butter. It was originally served in 1910 in a Paris cafe.
This sandwich is still a popular snack or casual meal throughout France and Switzerland in most bars and cafes. It is usually made in a special sandwich grilling iron consisting of two hinged metal plates, each with two shell-shaped indentations. At most Paris cafes, the Croque Monsieur is no longer prepared as a square sandwich but rather as a one-sided tartine made with a large single slice of bread from a round loaf.
1930s to 1960s - Many American cookbooks, published in the 1930s to1960s, featured this sandwich under different names such as French Sandwich, Toasted Ham Sandwich, and French Toasted Cheese Sandwich.
1950s - Although there are no existing documents to support this, it is felt that the Monte Cristo Sandwich was first served in southern California in the 1950s.
1966 - Disneyland in Anaheim, California also contributed to the trend of eating this sandwich. In 1966, it appeared on their menu of the Blue Bayou and Tahitian Terrace restaurants in New Orleanss Square in Disneyland and has continued to be a popular menu item to this day

@@podo_zrevaka I'm happy you quoted the entire entry on the Monte Cristo sandwich from the What's Cooking America website - but as you'll note in the comments on that website's entry, there are several people who mention their research led them to believe that the sandwich's specific name was not just made up from thin air & was indeed a reference to that particular hotel. One of those comments:
"Unfortunately, I don’t have the text to cite but I remember reading that the sandwich was invented there at the Monte Christo [sic] Hotel around the turn of the century. The hotel had a first rate restaurant that serviced passengers from the railroad when there was a stop there."

@@NaturalFlirtGamer so what? Who's the person that has made this comment and why shall I trust him/her? May be it was your own comment, who knows? ;) Take it easy, I'm not going to discuss, if the origin of the sandwich name has its roots in that hotel or else where. The same as you, I just wanted to share the information that I've found. So you can believe whatever you want and have the last word. Stay safe)

@@podo_zrevaka I didn't know we're getting argumentative, but I'm sad you interpret any response to you as an argument. All I mean was it seems that there is quite some controversy about the origin, and somehow, you would think something so famous would have a cut-and-dry explanation, but it doesn't! Let's enjoy the mystery and the sandwich.

Akis, I enjoyed your video, but as a connoisseur of this sandwich in America, I have found the variations quite different from your presentation.
Frequently, the bread is first prepared as French toast, then combined with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese. After heating while combined, powdered sugar is sprinkled all over and served often with a berry jam.
I would invite you to join me in Tacoma, WA, USA, to a restaurant which I find makes a fabulous version.
Love your videos, and especially love the Greek recipes! Thank you!!! Yassas!

There is a theory the sandwich was invented at the Monte Cristo Hotel in Everett Washington. It probably wasn’t though. The hotel maybe just served the sandwich and called it Monte Cristo as a marketing tool. And over time it was the catchiest name so it stuck.

After almost 2 months, Akis is back to his usual self, not just black gloves! :) this discussion format is very engaging, please keep the dialog going with the viewers, it's always good to know how a recipe came from. I prefer this new decor/color compare to the sage theme you have for the Kitchen Lab TV. These color represent who you are, since it was your original kitchen when you started years ago. I still prefer your white marble counter, or the natural wood counter, it made the dish "pop".
Before watching this, I actually made a similar sandwich today (I swear!) because I have all the ingredients. I cooked the bread like a regular French Toast, then I add the ham & cheese. Next time I will melt the cheese while my French Toast is still cooking, then I will stag it up, this way, all the bread will be equally coated with eggs and I don't have to press it with another pan and less mess for me :)

It is believed that the Monte Cristo started off as the French Croque Monsieur, a grilled cheese sandwich with Gruyere and ham. Then, starting in the 1930s, more variations of this sandwich started to show up cookbooks, then in the 1950s, it made its way onto a menu in a southern California restaurant under the name of Monte Cristo. It then made its debut at Disneyland in 1966.

"Monte Cristo" is thought to be a tribute to the French novel The Count of Monte Christo by Alexander Dumas, and as such, the sandwich's name suggests its French origins. The traditional Monte Cristo sandwich is made from deli ham and Swiss cheese. The entire sandwich is then lightly dipped in egg batter and grilled.

Montecristo is in fact a Tirrenian island pertaining to my lovely Italy; however, it also made me think about the novel by Alexandre Dumas, The count of Montecristo... Dumas was French, the croque monsieur is French... who knows if maybe it could be connected to the novel. I am sure I read that when I was in school, but more than the general plot I cannot remember.

I eat these all the time, but I make it differently. I use clarrified butter to fry but I use spicy mayo for the inside. It's just Aleppo or ancho pepper, mayo, powdered mustard, black pepper, and horseraddish. Then I use lean ham and an egg fried over medium. Provalone and/or Swiss or American cheese. Sometimes I put grape jelly on it too. The jelly and horseraddish play well together. That's a classic Midwest Monte Cristo sandwich.

"I'm a chef, I always accept the cookies"! 😂😂😂 Epic!!
Yet another awesome recipe of yours to veganize!! 😋 For those who want to enjoy Monte Christos cruelty free, you can use vegan butter, vegan mayo, vegan cheddar cheese, vegan ham (I recommend Tofurkey's chicory smoked ham if sold in your area 😋 ), vegan milk, and even though there are egg replacements in the market, I personally opt for aquafaba water.
I love the technique of adding pressure with a pan on top! How come I never thought of that?! Thanks Akis! :)

Thats a French Toast grilled ham & cheese. Monte Cristo is battered and deep fried. Big difference.
