According to Cooks Info, the sandwich came from the "Monte Cristo Hotel in Everett, Washington... The hotel itself was named after the Monte Cristo mining region in the Cascades Mountains. The sandwich, though, actually seems to predate that incarnation of the hotel. We have found references to the sandwich as early as 1923... well before the Croque Monsieur [in 1943]."
I love your channel!
1910 - Most food historian generally think that the Monte Cristo sandwich is a variation of a French dish called Croque Monsieur. This original grilled cheese sandwich consisted of Gruyere cheese and lean ham between two slices of crust-less bread, fried in clarified butter. It was originally served in 1910 in a Paris cafe.
This sandwich is still a popular snack or casual meal throughout France and Switzerland in most bars and cafes. It is usually made in a special sandwich grilling iron consisting of two hinged metal plates, each with two shell-shaped indentations. At most Paris cafes, the Croque Monsieur is no longer prepared as a square sandwich but rather as a one-sided tartine made with a large single slice of bread from a round loaf.
1930s to 1960s - Many American cookbooks, published in the 1930s to1960s, featured this sandwich under different names such as French Sandwich, Toasted Ham Sandwich, and French Toasted Cheese Sandwich.
1950s - Although there are no existing documents to support this, it is felt that the Monte Cristo Sandwich was first served in southern California in the 1950s.
1966 - Disneyland in Anaheim, California also contributed to the trend of eating this sandwich. In 1966, it appeared on their menu of the Blue Bayou and Tahitian Terrace restaurants in New Orleanss Square in Disneyland and has continued to be a popular menu item to this day
@@podo_zrevaka I'm happy you quoted the entire entry on the Monte Cristo sandwich from the What's Cooking America website - but as you'll note in the comments on that website's entry, there are several people who mention their research led them to believe that the sandwich's specific name was not just made up from thin air & was indeed a reference to that particular hotel. One of those comments:
"Unfortunately, I don’t have the text to cite but I remember reading that the sandwich was invented there at the Monte Christo [sic] Hotel around the turn of the century. The hotel had a first rate restaurant that serviced passengers from the railroad when there was a stop there."
@@NaturalFlirtGamer so what? Who's the person that has made this comment and why shall I trust him/her? May be it was your own comment, who knows? ;) Take it easy, I'm not going to discuss, if the origin of the sandwich name has its roots in that hotel or else where. The same as you, I just wanted to share the information that I've found. So you can believe whatever you want and have the last word. Stay safe)
@@podo_zrevaka I didn't know we're getting argumentative, but I'm sad you interpret any response to you as an argument. All I mean was it seems that there is quite some controversy about the origin, and somehow, you would think something so famous would have a cut-and-dry explanation, but it doesn't! Let's enjoy the mystery and the sandwich.
It was called by various other names in earlier incarnations. The name monte cristo was originated by Disneyland, when the put it on the menu under the name "Le Special deals Monte Christo Sandwich"
I Just love the way He speaks 🥰
Same here
Haha when he was using americanisms like calling the sandwiches " bad boys " I was laughing haha.
Same. I could listen to him talk forever 😊
Me too. Sexy Akis😏
@@mattybhoy6522 lets make him viral
I don’t care why they called it monte cristo, I’d call it Akis sandwich from now on😁 I prepare that for my daughter’s bfast whenever she asks me for it. Have not tried it with paprika but I’ll give that a try. Much love, stay safe❤️❤️❤️
Love seeing you having fun in the kitchen!
I have been playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey before I watched this and I thought some of the accents there were a bit exaggerated.
I watched 20 seconds of this video and yeah... They actually nailed it
This has nothing to do with cooking or the recipe Lol but nice point! :D
AKIS is the best as always!!!
Wow...this looks very unusual but super tasty!! I'm going to try this..thanks for sharing.👍💯
Akis, I enjoyed your video, but as a connoisseur of this sandwich in America, I have found the variations quite different from your presentation.
Frequently, the bread is first prepared as French toast, then combined with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese. After heating while combined, powdered sugar is sprinkled all over and served often with a berry jam.
I would invite you to join me in Tacoma, WA, USA, to a restaurant which I find makes a fabulous version.
Love your videos, and especially love the Greek recipes! Thank you!!! Yassas!
This is one of my favorites!!!!!
Thank you, Akis! I remember this sandwich being popular here in Southern California at a few restaurants when I was a child :)
Chef Akis,it is perfection 💕💕👍🏻
There is a theory the sandwich was invented at the Monte Cristo Hotel in Everett Washington. It probably wasn’t though. The hotel maybe just served the sandwich and called it Monte Cristo as a marketing tool. And over time it was the catchiest name so it stuck.
Washington State, Northwestern US - a hotel called the Monte Cristo (named after the local mining region) served this sandwich during the gold rush.
I want the fork!
I'm making this for lunch tomorrow. Thanks 👍
I just tried this recipe and its fantastic. Never tried this sandwich before. I put some basil leaves in em , and it worked so well. Thanks again for your wonderful recipes Akis!
Akis you are SO SUPER!!! More greetings from Prague
I'm American and never heard of this sandwich before. Looks F-ing good!
The Blade Runner it’s definitely an American Sandwich. I have never heard of it until I went to a Disneyland. It’s served in one of their restaurants. Occasionally, you can find it in diners. I know Mel’s Diner serves it.
the naming of the sandwich actually came from a 1920's novel wrote by Alexandre Dumas "The Count of Monte Cristo". Fork please.
One of my fav sandwiches
So classy and tasty 😍😍Sandwiches Akis... Loved seeing it Akis❤👏🏻👏🏻
Literally four days ago I talked about Monte Cristo sandwiches how I must try it and to find out how to preppare them. Efharisto para poli Akis! Greetings from Serbia
Akis when you talk to your people behind the video it makes it more original, good sandwich 🥪 👨🏻🍳
The sandwich looks divine Thank you, for sharing Akis, :-)
Akis is Greek god of good food. 😍
After almost 2 months, Akis is back to his usual self, not just black gloves! :) this discussion format is very engaging, please keep the dialog going with the viewers, it's always good to know how a recipe came from. I prefer this new decor/color compare to the sage theme you have for the Kitchen Lab TV. These color represent who you are, since it was your original kitchen when you started years ago. I still prefer your white marble counter, or the natural wood counter, it made the dish "pop".
Before watching this, I actually made a similar sandwich today (I swear!) because I have all the ingredients. I cooked the bread like a regular French Toast, then I add the ham & cheese. Next time I will melt the cheese while my French Toast is still cooking, then I will stag it up, this way, all the bread will be equally coated with eggs and I don't have to press it with another pan and less mess for me :)
It is believed that the Monte Cristo started off as the French Croque Monsieur, a grilled cheese sandwich with Gruyere and ham. Then, starting in the 1930s, more variations of this sandwich started to show up cookbooks, then in the 1950s, it made its way onto a menu in a southern California restaurant under the name of Monte Cristo. It then made its debut at Disneyland in 1966.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo is a famous novel from Alexandre Dumas, about Vengeance being better served cold.
IDK if this sandwich is better served cold, bc it looks amazing when warm
You are funny 😂 I will make that now for my dinner.Thank you so much for your recipe again ❤
I love the way you read!
Άκη το κοντοκουρεμεμο μαλλάκι σου ταιριάζει περισσότερο! Με αγάπη💖💗💖
"Monte Cristo" is thought to be a tribute to the French novel The Count of Monte Christo by Alexander Dumas, and as such, the sandwich's name suggests its French origins. The traditional Monte Cristo sandwich is made from deli ham and Swiss cheese. The entire sandwich is then lightly dipped in egg batter and grilled.
Yes!! Thanks for the story! It's sometimes pan fried and sprinkles with powdered sugar also!

Montecristo is in fact a Tirrenian island pertaining to my lovely Italy; however, it also made me think about the novel by Alexandre Dumas, The count of Montecristo... Dumas was French, the croque monsieur is French... who knows if maybe it could be connected to the novel. I am sure I read that when I was in school, but more than the general plot I cannot remember.
Maybe it's called Monte Cristo, cuz it's the "richer" version of The Croque Monsieur.... Bottom line... YUMMM🤤🤤🤤🤤
Hello akis 😊 how are you today. Oh this amazing everything is just so sweet. As honey i feel my day just like sunshine when ever i watch your video youtube channel. Sometimes i watch your greek language video even though i dont understand but i start to learn few greek words which is very intresting. As long as you are the one to cook i dont mind ill keep watching for ever simple. Recipe and always uniqe akis by the way your eyes colour with shirt colour looks lovely. Hope to see whole wheat sandwhiches recipe
And so now... what should I say... after I see this, I have a new addiction... but tonight I will have to put up with the bream that is sitting on my counter to thaw! Thank you Akis! Now I want to eat your recipe and I can't! 😂
Monte cristo is an italian island near corsica (today french) but became famous after french writer/poet alexander dumas wrote the book le comte de monte cristo (the count of monte cristo) which has been made a movie many times and became famous as a french name, so americans used it to refer to the french origin of the sandwich...that's my humble opinion
It was a hotel in Washington state. Excellent English by the way, Akis
"we want it to be tasty but not greasy" - got it! we are making a european version of the american one.
Since it is a french recipe, I always believed that it was a reference to the book "Le Comte de Monte Cristo" from the french writer Alexandre Dumas. But I am not sure about it... By the way, I want to thank you since I have been learning greek from your videos for a while now. Very difficult to find a greek teacher where I live in Brazil. Keep up the excellent work!
I eat these all the time, but I make it differently. I use clarrified butter to fry but I use spicy mayo for the inside. It's just Aleppo or ancho pepper, mayo, powdered mustard, black pepper, and horseraddish. Then I use lean ham and an egg fried over medium. Provalone and/or Swiss or American cheese. Sometimes I put grape jelly on it too. The jelly and horseraddish play well together. That's a classic Midwest Monte Cristo sandwich.
I feel you wanna also try the portugese "Francesinha" from Porto. From fatty sandwiches, thats the king for me!
Yaaaaaaassss. Itll blow this one away. Lol
👍👍👍👍Super
I'm thinking I'm gonna do this, served with a veggie stew, and use my George Foreman Grill, so it cooks both sides at once.
Okay, so I just made it on my lunch break from work. I used Arnold's whole grain bread, I used cajun turkey, colby jack and pepper jack cheese, and in the eggs I used the smoked paprika, along with onion and garlic powder ... and used Avocado mayo inside. Yeah ... I might try it with pizza "stuff" inside. :)
If its name is Monte Cristo and its origin is French since it is a French cuisine, maybe it's because of the Count of Monte Cristo story written by the French writer Alexandre Dumás! I want the fork! Xaxaxaxa 😜
Wow we wrote pretty much the same thing!! I do wonder if it could be related but... well afterall it seems too far fetched, no?
exactly @Yannis Verras thank you , merci beaucoup 😊😉
Monte Cristo sandwiches are of American origin.
Some sources credit the sandwich’s invention to the Monte Cristo Hotel in Everett, Washington, in its second building erected in 1925 [2]. The hotel itself was named after the Monte Cristo mining region in the Cascades Mountains. The sandwich, though, actually seems to predate that incarnation of the hotel. We have found references to the sandwich as early as 1923
Everett is the most beautiful city I've ever seen. Of course they'd create a sandwich like this. I'm bet they used Tillamook cheese, though.
Monte Cristo sandwich had its origins in Washington State and was named for the place where it was invented - Monte Cristo, Wasghinton :) Regards from Croatia my friend!
The Monte Christo Sandwich got its name from the Alexandre Dumas novel "The Count
of Montee Christo"
Yum!!! I am going to veganize this recipe and give it a try. It looks delicious and I reallywant to try it 🤤
American here and just ham just needs mustard, and I don't love mustard. I don't know why but it is crying for mustard. Maybe to give it a little kick? You are a handsome funny guy thanks.
offcourse I'm accepting the cookies I'm a chef 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💜
Who cares why it is called Monte Cristo they are so good. I added salami and Swiss vice Cheddar. Yummm
Make more sandwich's I'm hungry, thanks for sharing my friend try using Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise.
From the book "The count of Monté Cristo" by Alexandré Dumas .... probably something to do with the sandwich being triple layered..
Akis, I can keep falling in love 💘 with you over and over again ,
akis! you are the best greek chef whos making my dreams of having a restaurant come true! thankyou from the bottom of my heart i couldnt have prefect these dishes without you. thankyou to the most handsome greek chhef in the world!

For Akis every thing is *SEXY* even a beard 😁😁👏🏾🇩🇿👩🏿⚕️🇺🇲
😂😂😂😂
Who is Lakis, does he cook? 😁
💖💖💖💖
Food historian Linda Stradley suggests it comes from California. Perhaps it originated from the town of Monte Cristo, CA where there was a gold mine in the mountains around Los Angeles. This assertion makes sense to me, as Stradley goes on to say it became popular when served at Disneyland in Aneheim, California in 1966. Fork?
❤
"too much calories but I don't care"😂
The sandwich was named after a hotel in Everett Washington that made the sandwiches.
"Monte Cristo" is a tribute to the French novel The Count of Monte Christo by Alexander Dumas. As such, the sandwich's name suggests its French origins. Food historians generally think that the Monte Cristo sandwich is a variation of a French Croque Monsieur
I looked it up and the answer I got was this: "While its origin story and the source of the name are unknown, historians generally agree that the dish comes from California."
👌👌👌👏👏👏
Its the favourite receipt of Alexandre Dumas Pere for his friends, to cook...is invented by the author of The Count of Monte Cristo himself, the man was a very good home cook.
Damn..this man is not only sexy but he also has a sexy voice and an accent..!!
I'm sure it's Scottish dude. It's fried and beautiful. 😊
the name is probably in reference to both its french origins and the famous story of Alexandre Dumas (the count of monte Cristo), again im guessing
Did anybody win the fork?
😋😋😋😋😋😋👍👍👍👍👍
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
" Jerome.....coffee and a Montecristo...now"
Shrek 2
You forgot the powder sugar, but I like your version better. I also couldn't find why it is named Monte Cristo sandwich.
Monte Christo is different than this. You use Swiss cheese, ham, turkey then batter dipped and fried and then finish with powdered sugar. Dip in preserves of your choice.
Akis trying to read English Wikipedia is adorable
I think it was invented in a place called Monte Cristo Washington. Maybe
Who knew the word Mayonnaise could be so seductive? 🥴😜😂
Yes, we want your fork!
akIS vERY gOOd eNGLISH
I want fork! Please don’t come for me if I am wrong Monte Cristo is a hotel in America where it was created .I really thought it was created in casino. Please send fork or sandwich to New Zealand 🇳🇿 😂

Heart attack on a plate! 🙈🙈
Ba ba boi
Monte cristo translates to mount of Christ in english or maybe mountain of christ
named after the hotel Monte Cristo, which predates the incarnation of the hotel apparently.....
Enough with the fork😂😂🍴
❤❤😁👍
good ☺️😘
"I'm a chef, I always accept the cookies"! 😂😂😂 Epic!!
Yet another awesome recipe of yours to veganize!! 😋 For those who want to enjoy Monte Christos cruelty free, you can use vegan butter, vegan mayo, vegan cheddar cheese, vegan ham (I recommend Tofurkey's chicory smoked ham if sold in your area 😋 ), vegan milk, and even though there are egg replacements in the market, I personally opt for aquafaba water.
I love the technique of adding pressure with a pan on top! How come I never thought of that?! Thanks Akis! :)
mate are you italian or greek?
I am Greek.
💋💋💋💋💋💋❤❤
Thats a French Toast grilled ham & cheese. Monte Cristo is battered and deep fried. Big difference.
they say monte cristo for sexiness
Was reading what?? Haha
