When I was a kid, this kid was the definition of cool.
I'm totally agree
My first crush
Was ? I still idolize him being 20 years his elder present day.
Agree he’s so believable as a teenager
This kid is still the definition of cool
One of the best child acting performances of all time. 13 years old, and never been in a movie before. And he nailed it. None of the (adult) actors, that played JC later never even came close to Furlong.
Let’s not forget about McCauley
@@Larseus the kid from Home Alone?
Bale was pretty good as JC, despite his movie being shit.
He was 15 at this time
@King Royal how was he “too old”
Furlong was really amazing in his first role. He was the heart of that film
@James Henderson how could a nine yrs old ride motorcycle??
@James Henderson I know but can u find actual nine yrs old who ride motorcycles? Besides John suppose to be ten not nine
@James Henderson the film was set in 1995 not 1994.. have original screenplay it clearly say John is 10
@James Henderson James Cameron clearly describe John as ten years old.
In screenplay
1991: "John Connor is a really important role"
2019: **Kills John Connor off immediately**
lol exactly my thought
I thought dark fate was pretty good, but its hard to imagine that t3 , genesis, or dark fate is the story after t2. its like the movies legit ended at t2. went humerous after them. terminator was scary with chilling music, after just became a joke, talk to the hand and what not.
@@SuperChalkster Honestly I wish Salvation just got it's planned sequels at this point.
@@charlesmaclellan8124 Salvation while had its problems it was showing the future war we all wanted
@@jammygamer8961 Exactly. ... It could have turned into greatness... Bit they had to go with Genisys. ... I also would have liked a sequel to that. I was interested to see how the timeline got screwed up, and a T-800 going back to protect a very young Sarah Connor.
I find that the Terminator franchise after 2 had some good ideas amongst 3, Salvation, Genisys & Dark Fate. ... If only they could have got their shit straight. Terminator deserves so much better.
I’ve always found Furlong’s acting incredibly convincing. Kid was born to act.
As a kid his age when T2 came out, he was literally the first believable "cool" kid in a movie.
They don't make movies how they used to. RIP 80's and 90's.
@@Ricky-tr2hdThat's what old people said in the 80s and 90s about films made in the 40s and 50s. Funny, how life catches up with us all, isn't it.

"and, yeah man, 30 years later, Jim killed me"
-Edward Furlong
@virtualnate: Well, given how much they screwed up the Terminator series after T2, I bet Cameron was saying when he killed off John, “well, I started this franchise, I might as well kill it off myself.” I wouldn’t have blamed him.
@@masteroffun9627 I liked Terminator Salvation.
I'm glad she fought for him. He is the perfect John Connor.
Laundry day... right?
Screen presence is everything and they can't teach you that in drama school. Furling had it from day one but was a bit shy. I'm glad Cameron gave him that chance because he aced that role
Usually kid actors are not very good. He was fucking amazing.
Edward furlong as John is the best decision they have ever made
Yeah, along with Robert Patrick.
He was a great choice for John Connor
Yes for the movie No for Edward...

Amazing to think this was his first role. He seems so seasoned and natural.

@killer boy Yeah, keep making up that nonsense. James Cameron, a Man, wrote this story, so don't blame Women for His decisions.

@@Cyborganna You do realise that men can support feminism, right? Dark Fate isn't even feminism anyway, it's virtue-signalling.
Look what they did to ma boy!
Fun Fact: Production for T2 took sufficiently long that Edward Furlong visibly aged during the shoot. He is clearly much younger in the scene in the desert, for example, than in other scenes. His voice began to break and had to be pitched one level in post-production. He had also grown so tall over the months that, for one scene shot late in the production schedule, he had to stand in a hole in the ground in order to maintain continuity in height difference with Linda Hamilton.
wow. interesting, after watching it hundreds of times i did notice he did look even more baby faced in the desert scenes
His voice did Change throughout the film
Yeah, his tone of voice changed, because he knew, he had to become the leader of the resistance
His voice was changing in the movie also
according to Furlong it took them i want to say 9 months to film? they started filming in (1990) i think? i am so glad that he is now clean it's s shame on how bad he looks now and that's not because of age i think it's cause of his drug use
Was very good in American History X as well.
lardosian good call out
That was him? Damn.
And Detroit Rock City
He has never been good in anything, he has zero acting training and it shows. His only claim to fame is that some agent managed to con James Cameron into accepting him into T2 where he was an embarrassment to anyone who knows anything about acting.
@Ryan Akwar "there are many actors with no training who are talented. "
There are some. He is not one of them.
Edward Furlong was the coolest kid ever. Unfortunately, almost no one could have a good adulthood after having that much fame and bliss as a teenager. He really fell apart.
Drugs. That's it. He started using drugs and it fucked him up, both physically and mentally.
@@matt2522 He never said that was his biggest problem. He simply went into drugs. HARD. To this day, he has to be addicted to something, even if it's Red Bull.
he seems ok these days
It's not fame and bliss that broke him, it was the people around him and no stable person to mentor him how to overcome that fame and bliss. There are always people who can handle those pressure, though it's not for everyone. Drugs is his downfall.
I don't know what you're talking about. Edward has a normal life as an actor.
And he's still loved by his fans .
This kid nailed it, and I'm not the biggest fan of Furlong, but I have to give him credit where it is due. Amazing performance.
Edward Furlong has been through alot of hard times in the past 20 years, glad hes clean and sober, he has so much talent i really hope he has a comeback soon, so much potential.

A perfect example of this is his co actor Ethan Suplee from American History X. Look how far that dude has come from being out of shape. And there is always hope for Eddie and anyone else. Eddie seems like an empath to me and has a good soul deep down. You need to have walked in his shoes to really know what he went through. I imagine Eddie suffered from depression his whole life, still does and add in being a huge child star with ZERO guidance who acted in the biggest and best action movie ever made (just my opinion) at the most pivotal time in his life.
Everyone said the same for Robert Downey Junior. While he wasn't overweight is was a fully blown drug addict in and out of jail and it seemed like his career was kaput. Look at him now with Iron man.

Crazy he was just living his life and Holywood found him. How many millions of people have dedicated their lives to auditioning and acting and never had so much as a lead role in an advert, and yet they found a absolute gem in Edward Furlong. It could not have worked without him. That casting lady new her shit. From what I read she discovered a few great Holywood talents.

It wasn't that he was a gem. It was James Cameron that brought the best out of him. That's the job of a director. He is the best director of all time. Edwards career didn't really go anywhere after that film besides American history x

Don't blame cocaine. Blame Hollywood. He was a troubled kid from a broken home, trying to get help, when Hollywood came knocking with promises of fame and fortune. He had no idea how to deal with it. Spoiled rich child actors can barely handle it, so he did surprisingly well.
Schwarzenegger: Cocainum!
Too much pressure and wrong group of friends unfortunately
Too bad Edward didn't know this would lead him down the path of long term self-destruction.
It's sad. Like Home Alone Kevin.
@@eSKAone- Home Alone Kevin is perfectly fine, he was on Joe Rogan's podcast several months ago and talked about how he always had a good childhood. He talked about how ALL the rumors about him either being molested, going crazy or being dead were complete bullshit and that his temporary experimentation with drugs wasn't very different from most people's.
@Mr Twister Yeah I believe that. All the other victims who have come out, and even the ones who haven't, like Furlong, ALL show signs of abuse and seem emotionally broken, even Corey Feldman who seems to have recovered pretty well in comparison to the others seems emotionally scarred. McCauley Calkin on the other hand seems pretty damn normal and genuinely at peace. I think a three hour long one on one podcast is more than enough footage to at least find SOME small hint of abuse or emotional trauma and I didn't see ANY.

"When they tried to act angry or tough it didn't look real" that right there hit like a hammer

This is a cool story. Kind of like some of the discovery stories of actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood. He validated Mali Finn seeing something in him, as he turned out to be a talented young actor. He'll always be remembered for T2, but impressed me more in films like AMERICAN HEART and A HOME OF OUR OWN. People who say he wasn't a good actor should check out some of his more dramatic films. He had a multi-faceted presence you don't see in many teen actors and played some heavy roles opposite some very talented and experienced adult actors. And if he hadn't been at that Boys & Girls Club that day, his talent would have never been known. Makes you wonder just how much talent is never realized, only for lack of opportunity, in this big ol' world.
Well said. It reminds of stuff like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics where there are young people out there, and of all ages who would have won that gold medal if only they had the opportunity, money and supportive parents behind them. You need someone in the industry to give you a chance to shine.
Why WHY did he do what he did to his body? He should've looked so good, like Leonardo. But no, the drugs, etc took their toll.
Hollywood chewed him up and spit him out.
I used to think he was leanardo for the longest time....He had that same spirit in him
Oh no, Leonardo has always been physically overrated.
@Paulo Hernanndizz Still a very long decorated career in movies, unlike many kids who are burnt out, or worse before they become adults.
Well from this interview, it sounds like he wasn't trying to be an actor. He was just a normal kid that got asked to be in a movie - a movie that became very successful. Then, he wasn't in anything else nearly as successful. After observing many child actors, I've come to the conclusion that these kinds of transitions can have serious effects on them mentally.
Another example is Carl Switzer who played Alfalfa from the original Little Rascals. He was a highly praised child star at the time. But after his voice changed during puberty, the studios dropped him and he struggled to find work. He turned to alcohol and odd jobs, until he got killed over $50. It can take a huge mental toll on anyone who goes from being a nobody to extremely famous, then back to a nobody. For a kid that can't anticipate these transitions, it must be even harder. Add to that the demands of Hollywood, the unscrupulous people you meet, and the access to drugs/alcohol, I think it would be difficult to not fall victim to that deleterious lifestyle.
Aww! He was too cute! Look at that little face!
Of course you would think that you’re his mom
@@ramennoodz2155 Too true. I guess I'm biased.
I'm greatly amazed how great and awesome Edward Furlong in T2, he had natural talent and charisma. No actor has ever played John Connor better than him.
We all wanted to be like Edward Furlong as a kid. A foul mouthed wisecracking smartass. 😅 Though no previous acting experience, he was the perfect choice. It's hard to believe he never had acting on the mind before he was approached by a casting agent. He was so good in the movie
The casting director for Terminator 2,Mali Finn, spotted Furlong on the steps of the Pasadena Boys Club in September 1990.
Furlong had no acting experience whatsoever, but was encouraged by Finn to audition for the role of John Connor.
Cameron: John Connor is an extremely important character...

Terminator 2 would never have been this good without a talented child actor like Edward Furlong. The iconic dialogue he had with Arnie in the car when John teaches the Terminator some street lingo was just brilliant acting.

@@sauronthegreat5799 I won’t deny that Christian Bale is an amazing actor and it made sense to cast him because John would have to be around 40 years old in Salvation, but Salvation cant hold a candle to the cinematic greatness of T2 regardless of who played John. My only issue with T3 not casting Ed as John was that it had been 12 years or so since T2 came out and Ed would have been the perfect candidate to play John based on the chronological time that had passed in the series. The reason for not casting Ed is beyond me though, maybe he was offered the role and he turned it down.

This period during the 90s, in terms of child stardom, consisted mainly of the likes of: Macaulay Culkin, Edward Furlong, Elijah Wood and Brad Renfro. Then presiding over them were the slightly older River Phoenix and Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s clips like this which truly re-emphasise just how lucky we are to have RUclips, as it continues to preserve priceless footage such as this forever. Who’d’ve thought, even in the 90s, just how invaluable taping something onto VHS would become, especially given what it’s evolved into. It’s true when people say that RUclips is the closest thing we’ve got to a time machine, which is just as well when the past is preferable to both the present and such an uncertain future (however I’m speaking personally about my own current situation when I say that).
