  • Haunted by memories of those mysterious CD-ROM shareware compilations of my childhood, I finally revisit "The Adventures of MicroMan", later released as "MicroMan Adventures". What exactly is this game, and did its creator use all that registration money to retire on a yacht? Digressions include Bill Gates, WAP, and blockchain games.

Thanks for covering this. I had this on some massive shareware compilation as a kid. Didnt play it much, but it stuck in my memory and I've never been sure what it was called.

All I think of when hearing the name WAP is the wild west of early mobile internet on a 320x240 display.

Thanks for this video. Unfortunately, "The Adventures of MicroMan" seems to be an - almost - forgotten classic. I purchased a retail version 1.0 of Episode 1 and 2 back in the day from BHV Playware, a German publisher. Of course, version 1.5 and 2.0 were much improved, but I still cherrish this original release. It didn't even have sound!

I didn't think I could hate billionaires anymore than I already do, but I was wrong.

@zacrl, it is always possible to find more hate in one's heart for billionaires. The important question, though, is how are you channeling that hate into bringing about their downfall? If you aren't part of a Marxist organization, you are not a threat to billionaires. They will happily sell you a "fuck the 1%" t-shirt, they don't need us to like them as long as we keep making them rich.

Paying for a registration implies all the content is on the shareware demo already. I'm wondering how hard it would be to reverse engineer a key for it. Not wondering enough to try; just wondering.

Good question! The readme file and the game itself all use the term "registration", but it's a bit misleading. It sounds like buying the game would lead to the developer mailing out a CD-ROM with the sequel and an alternate version of the main game with cheats enabled (there's no place to enter a registration code, for example). I haven't been able to find any uploads of the full version of the game, so hopefully someone rips the disc at some point.
