It's important to note that Dreams does NOT use polygon rendering, it's all raymarched distance fields. Not impossible to turn into polygons, but still.
What's even sadder about the part around 29:00 is that Roblox itself went through this phase. I used to play the game back in 2008 and there were no irl monetization systems for creators or anything like that. People just created worlds (called "places" at the time) for the sake of it. You'd get "tickets" or "tix" each time someone visited your place, which you could then use to buy cosmetics, but there was no real money involved in that entire process. Roblox itself had an optional subscription called Builders' Club, which gave you more slots to create more places, but that was it. Eventually that game succumbed to greed, it began around the time they had a "DisneyXD" crossover which brought in a lot of impressionable kids to the game. Great video.
Given the relative recency of events mentioned in the video (LBP server shutdown, Karting being 10+ years old), I can assume that video was made sometime in the last 2 years. Given the quality of that video and of the videos on this channel, it's sad to think that there are other videos like it lost to time, at least publicly. Now at the end of the day I'm just making assumptions about that channel. This re-upload could have been the only video like it on that previous channel, but I hope this channel doesn't get lost in the ether like your previous one. Computer Lab has some of the best topical discussion videos that I've seen on this platform in a long time and I hope to be able to see them for a long time. Keep up the good work!
"... an internet where creativity is celebrated for its own sake." I miss this a lot. Your conclusion sums it up so well. The Re-Volt community is still going strong and follows this philosophy. Thanks for making this video, I played LBP a lot but never tried the kart games.
I hate that I didn't have a PS3 back then. I was playing Mario Kart Wii, MySims Racing, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed on Wii and Wii U. Sony should bring ModNation Racers and LittleBigPlanet Karting back. Maybe they could do one big crossover game for both ips instead of choosing to bring back one franchise over the other. I think that sort of explains why Team Sonic Racing wasn't really well received since people loved that the first two games were Sega crossover games instead of just a Sonic game. My brothers have a PS4 & PS5, so if Sony ever decide to bring them back, I'm ready. I love the kart racing genre.
These days, I feel like the best equivalent to these sorts of games exist in the indie and fangaming scene - in particular, what comes to mind here are Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart and its sequel, Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers. Those are both games I've invested a lot of time in (Ring Racers in particular being my obsession for the past 2-3 months) and which are fueled in large part by their modding communities, an intersection of the old-school Doom modding scene with the endless well of fan content that is the Sonic fandom. While they both lean more in the "endlessly extendable kart racing game" category of things like ModNation than they do LBP Kart's "mini-game engine" style, the community has still done some crazy things with these games and it's all motivated by nothing more than passion for the games and the community around them - no one *can* monetize anything about them, so they kinda have to be. Of course, they're also games where you have to learn a map editor and some intricacies of the Doom engine to make stuff for them, but that point about the spirit of creativity for creativity's sake still stands, I think. This video also made me really wish I had hopped on either of these games while they were still active - not sure why I never touched LBP Kart, my family was always big into LBP and I've always loved Mario Kart. Shame I missed out on it.
Love both games but modnation is definitely the better racing game. LBP Karting feels like driving through memory lane of all the LBP levels. It's nice seeing how they captured those classic levels.
Dreams is a tool that allows players to easily create experiences with a ton of freedom and to share them. I'm not sure the same persons would have learned to make actual games on professional engines and attempted to share or sell them instead.
I always felt like I was the only one who noticed these two games were the same. I lost my copy of LBP Karting like less than a year ago. I was in the middle of remaking levels from the phone app game called wreckless racing and it just disappeared one day.
I remember watching a video of some person recreating the bunnies from JMKit in Mod Nation. I couldn't figure out the name of the game for years, until I think 2 years ago where I came across the video again and found the game I think in the title.
This video was really good. I had LBP Karting back in the day and I never even considered it to be related to ModNation, but knew that in most cases, I preferred ModNation. I think the only thing LBP had going for it was its consistent art direction where the ModNation characters could look like PSP Miis or something. But yeah, cool! Once again big consumer brands and revenue wipe creativity off the slate and make everything boring! Love to see it.
As a LBP and Modnations Fan, I did not like LBP Karting despite 100% the game. I felt it needed a lot more in the Modnations department when it came to track creation plus handling and the extra creation tools LBP2 had. I was very let down by that.
I never played this game but I loved LBP1 and 2. ModNation Racers was just amazing. the online and character creation. It was very in depth compared to LBP. I used to play a ton of Mario Kart on the Gamecube and Wii and ModNation just felt sorta like that but better
How did you make a 30 minute video on lbpk and not even MENTION the soundtrack. I still listen to the whole soundtrack even though I haven’t played the game since I was 5. It needs a whole video going in on how good the ost and characters and areas are in lbpk because I LOVED EVERYTHING from the areas and characters. Territorio And Shooby Shooby Do Yah! are songs I have downloaded because of how much I love them and I loved that fat rat in Victoria’s area. Just saying, it’s impressive how you didn’t talk about that

Roblox as a company too back then was involved with the community a lot, even made events with real rewards for players

I''m glad you re-posted this video, because I sure didn't see your older channel's version. This was a great breakdown of multiple aspects of gaming.
I had a hunch that you've had more experience on Youtuibe. Great video, hope to see the channel really grow!
Thank you muchly, I appreciate it!

congrats on that small clip in the Folding Ideas James Rolfe video! Immediately thought of your video in the intro.

bro... I walked to bestbuy on a school lunch period to pick up mod nation racers... what a different time! iconic video topic choice 💪😎
Modnation Racers was my favorite PS3 game lol but so was LittleBigPlanet
Crazy that this only has 1.4k views rn. This is a multi thousand if not more, type of video

Love this vid and the work on your channel
solid video, great research. keep up the good work dude

I remember buying this game used at GameStop and it having an online pass. I didn't play much.
Never played LBP karting but I played modnation racers, and it was fun for the time. Interested to see what your thoughts are on this topic.

Great video! I'm glad it got recommended to me! 😊
That level at 9:40 looks pretty cool.

ModNation racers was SOOO good
Love me some Unreal! LBP definitely had flimsy controls. Good vid!
watched it all, nice there was something to learn about fate of creational gaming
Modnation was so much fun. Little big planet racing wasn’t bad but 1 and 2 were the best
What happened to the old channel if it no longer exists
This is such a good video
