Hi folks, that's my Supra in the video. What a fun day at the drag strip! We knew these cars would be close, we just didn't know how close. But that's the fun of showing how good modern cars have gotten compared to the classics. I've done two major modifications to the Supra: an HKS Hi-Power exhaust for a little more sound and KW V3 suspension to replace an aging stock suspension. Otherwise, all stock. The automatic transmission doesn't serve the Mk4 well, you're either full throttle to get the most out of it or it shifts at times that don't do the car any favors. I'll do something with the transmission eventually, just not sure what yet. Thanks for watching!
Leave the the transmission alone. It's probably the main reason the car hasn't been modified to within an inch of its life. It's a grand touring cruiser anyways. Too many cars today, like the GR Corolla, can whip it. Just be glad you found a pristine example and enjoy the car for what it is. That's my opinion, anyways.

First off, big thank you to James for letting Tommy drag race that pristine example of a Supra. As everyone knows, those cars are not cheap. Obviously the engine in the Supra was capable of well over 320hp. Was this because of the Japanese "Gentleman's agreement"?
I own both, a Supra MK4 automatic and the GR Yaris stick shifted (witch is avalible in europe). The supra is a real GT for the german Autobahn. You can easily do 500 miles with it and everytime you stop somebody will come to you and talk about it. The GR Yaris is made for backroads and is realy great fun! I updated it to 340HP and now it is ridiculous fast. Love both cars.
@@ps.6023 Compared to today's sports cars, the MKIV is very comfortable, so for me it is clearly a GT. Of course, you are welcome to have a different opinion on this, but this is mine after 16 years ownership (heard that right - I have had the MKIV since 2008).
You didn't acknowledge that the Supra is losing 20-25% of its power through the old automatic transmission/drivetrain whereas the Yaris is brand new and hasn't lost any power yet.
As a guy that drives a 5 speed manual mustang as my non winter daily there are times It would be nice to pop it into D and go, I will say I wouldn't auto swap it tho. and if all out acceleration is your thing a well sorted auto is faster.
These are cool cars. IMO if the Supra was manual there would be no competition. With that being said, the new GR Corolla is quick. I don't think it will last 30 years, tho. The amount of stress that the 3 cyl engine is way higher than the Supra, but it's also way more practical and easier to maintain. The auto transmissions nowadays are way faster to shift than those even 20 years ago. Nice video!
Yeah there is a big difference between modern and "old" automatics. I swapped a manual into my old Volvo 940 and with everything else being equal it brought my 1/4 mile time from a 15.3 to a 14.9
The J engine from Toyota is a diesel. This is the JZ engine. Big details....The 2-way turbocharger system Toyota works in a manner that is kind of complicated, leaving all the vacuum lines and controls you see under hood. The six cylinders feed the first turbine. Ad the rpm climbs, exhaust gas is bled into the second turbine to bring it online. Most can feel when they are both chugging along. And that is what happens. They are not sequential (first then second), it uses one, then both.
I’m here for Supra fanboy excuses….but but but, if it had a manual transmission, if it had a giant wing, if it had 145 lbs of boost, if it had dragon decals…it would be SO much faster 😢
Like the coyote and barra, it can be made to embarrass anyone very easily. People like these engine for the outstanding platforms they are…. Not stock power.
ok so, altitude should not affect a turbocharged engine unless the peak boost is very low, or the manifold pressure is capped by boost not actual manifold pressure. The turbo will just compress more air and compensate for the lower outside air pressure at any reasonable altitude below 10,000 feet at least.
While I fully get where the Supra’s owner is coming from I would have to make improvements anywhere I could in the same way he did the exhaust. So I would probably go with slightly wider rims and tires, upgrade to the 6 speed stick, upgrade some of the suspension components like bushing, shocks, springs, etc., better air intake, MAYBE a boost controller…. Essentially, I’d keep it mostly stock, but improve the things I could without major changes to the overall infrastructure of the car. Make it perform better across the board in a way that could be reversed in a day or two. And considering just how much they are known to respond to upgrades, I suspect you’d enjoy significant “seat of your pants” improvements without spending a fortune or damaging the car.
My wife's turbo Kia Soul did 14.6 @ 96 mph at 6000 ft elevation lol. Be funny to have a video of a Soul pulling away from a GRC. The Soul doesn't even have launch control, all you can do is just hit the gas.
Hi! James here from the video, that's my Supra. When I got the car the front shocks were toast, the driver front lower control arm and passenger front upper control arm needed to be replaced. I did both of them and a full set of KW V3 suspension on the car, it's worlds better than just when I drove it home from Austin to Denver.
2012-13 I saw one for sale in Phoenix that made 4 digit power numbers with and without nitrous. It was marked at $25k. Definitely a bargain compared to post-C19 prices for everything these days.
That Toyota Supra is one nice car. Toyota really messed up when they tried to pass a re-badge BMW for a Toyota Supra. By the way, I think that color blue is rare for a Toyota Supra .
100% agree. BMWs engines are not even close in build quality and ability to handle raw power the way the 2jz can. Toyota should have looked at Land Rover's use of BMW engines and how that turned out. lol
All you have to do is go single turbo, full simple bolts on; full exhaust system, intake, on that auto transmission you will blow most modern car out the water. If you want a fast Supra you eventually would go built automatic anyway.
Love how kids think the 4th gen Supra is legend. The 4th gen had the worst sales of the Supra. Was the car that killed off the Supra at the time. Was expensive was considered fat and soft. The 2nd and 3rd gen Supra was way more loved at the time. Because used.ones were available and 3000 Mitsubishi was too much money for the budget F&F used a 4th gen in the movie then every millenial kid loved them. That said 4 gen Supra too anyone who was there in the 90's hated these cars and without F&F would have stayed unloved because still is soft and still looks fat.

Two very important points to note. 1) two years after the Supra came out it was determined that 100-200hp is all that could be gained on the factory Supra twin turbo motor, AND 2 years after the GR Corolla came out it was determined the same 100-200hp is all that could be gained on the factory GR Corolla Engine. Aftermarket develop takes time and isn't always an exact science until those that prove themselves come out of the woodwork with results. The Supra became shockingly modifiable when the right people suddenly came out with their results. Same thing with all the legendary motors, like the Mitsu 4G63, and the Honda/Acura kseries, and the current Supra, and the current GR Corolla. Next point 2) The 4th gen Supra was underrated, about 30hp. That specific car likely has 5-10hp more due to the exhaust and better&lighter modern tires. There was also a free mod where you bled/pinched off some of the pressure on the wastegate line and gained power, which this car likely has being as old as it is. The auto supra also weighs 200 lbs more than the auto GR Corolla. This proves it's not an apples to apples comparison, and unless you went back in time with a new GR Corolla, you're never going to get the true comparison... sufficeth to say that the GR Corolla is likely quicker in every respect.

"I feel the need.... The need for SPEED!"
I loved the Supra 35 years ago. Love it even more now
I own both, a Supra MK4 automatic and the GR Yaris stick shifted (witch is avalible in europe). The supra is a real GT for the german Autobahn. You can easily do 500 miles with it and everytime you stop somebody will come to you and talk about it. The GR Yaris is made for backroads and is realy great fun! I updated it to 340HP and now it is ridiculous fast. Love both cars.
you havnet owned one long enough or driven it much to know that its not a GT car, gt cars are comfy the MK4 was not.
@@ps.6023 Compared to today's sports cars, the MKIV is very comfortable, so for me it is clearly a GT. Of course, you are welcome to have a different opinion on this, but this is mine after 16 years ownership (heard that right - I have had the MKIV since 2008).
@@ingo1234 Ive owned mine for 24, and comfy for a few rides
You didn't acknowledge that the Supra is losing 20-25% of its power through the old automatic transmission/drivetrain whereas the Yaris is brand new and hasn't lost any power yet.
I'm sure they know, but it was a comparison of how it would do today
For over 20 years I've kept hearing reviewers stating that there's a bigger turbo. They're both the same size.
Crazy part is that the Raptor R would smoke them both. The new truck market is crazy.
As a guy that drives a 5 speed manual mustang as my non winter daily there are times It would be nice to pop it into D and go, I will say I wouldn't auto swap it tho. and if all out acceleration is your thing a well sorted auto is faster.
You wouldnt want to auto swap it because you like to lose
Supra was coming for you but impressive.
Love it!
What car will be more reliable and hold its value better,, winner is supra.
I swapped a manual into my old Volvo 940 and with everything else being equal it brought my 1/4 mile time from a 15.3 to a 14.9
no one will drive the GR or Camry TRD for 30 years, that's not the point
I like the Supra. But the 90s Nissan 300zx...now that car is my dream car.
1. Never race a twin turbo Supra
2. Never race a 03-04 SVT Cobra
3. See #1 and #2
Don’t be scared little baby boy. It’s just a race.
I’m here for Supra fanboy excuses….but but but, if it had a manual transmission, if it had a giant wing, if it had 145 lbs of boost, if it had dragon decals…it would be SO much faster 😢
I like seeing a clean stock one... They are always modified to hell and back.
Like the coyote and barra, it can be made to embarrass anyone very easily. People like these engine for the outstanding platforms they are…. Not stock power.
Ok troll, go eat your cereal and put your back pack on

Triggered! Are you binge watching The fast and the furious to get your blood pressure down?
It hurts when your favorite car got beaten by an glorified Uber car.
ok so, altitude should not affect a turbocharged engine unless the peak boost is very low, or the manifold pressure is capped by boost not actual manifold pressure. The turbo will just compress more air and compensate for the lower outside air pressure at any reasonable altitude below 10,000 feet at least.
Love these drag races but I think it's time to let Jen have the fun boy stuff too.FFC in Arizona
15:58 The fast And the Furious race but real life.
Who ever that man buys that supra from definitely was taking good care of it indeed it's really looking superb talk about age with grace for sure 👍👍
Wild that an auto repainted a new color TT Supra in this market sold for $62,500 w/ 155k
A roll is the best measure, modern AWD cars have too much tech these days for the older cars on a dig.
yeah the other tests weren't fair, a new car is way more responsive than old ones
90s technology still looking good
The GR is practically a tuned car. Tune the Supra, no competition.
Tuned from factory for both, don't forget
The thumbnail reminds me of those old BMW Lemans memes ppl used to put together...😅😅😅
How is the Corolla so big?!?!
The turbo 3 banger will never live as long as the 2JZ
My wife's turbo Kia Soul did 14.6 @ 96 mph at 6000 ft elevation lol. Be funny to have a video of a Soul pulling away from a GRC. The Soul doesn't even have launch control, all you can do is just hit the gas.
The automatic has a manual button where you can shift the gears so you have more control over the gears. Should of tried it with the OD off.
12:40 - replace those worn front lower control arms = night n day difference on my old sc300 (they’re interchangeable)
Hi! James here from the video, that's my Supra. When I got the car the front shocks were toast, the driver front lower control arm and passenger front upper control arm needed to be replaced. I did both of them and a full set of KW V3 suspension on the car, it's worlds better than just when I drove it home from Austin to Denver.
The Supra hype is real. Nothing wrong with a nearly 30 year old car losing a race to a modern compact starter car.
Just remembered I was bidding on this car but stopped at 60k it sold for a little more which I think is a great deal
still today the Mk4 Supra looks so Amazing . It’s just so perfect 🤩 like I say we will never have another MK4 Supra and the mighty 2JZ engine .
The Supra was known for its handling lol that was a strong point
Don't drive the Corolla over 85MPH or it'll catch on fire
2012-13 I saw one for sale in Phoenix that made 4 digit power numbers with and without nitrous. It was marked at $25k. Definitely a bargain compared to post-C19 prices for everything these days.
The new front desing of the GR corolla only looks decent in the grey color. But the front design of the last model year still looks better.
Its kind of crazy how big the "compact" GR is next to the Supra.
That Toyota Supra is one nice car. Toyota really messed up when they tried to pass a re-badge BMW for a Toyota Supra. By the way, I think that color blue is rare for a Toyota Supra .
Sounds like Toyota could really use your expertise. They’d be lucky to have you telling them what’s a good idea and what’s not.
@@19hundoc47he's right as they aren't selling as well and will have a toyota engine by 2026
100% agree. BMWs engines are not even close in build quality and ability to handle raw power the way the 2jz can.
Toyota should have looked at Land Rover's use of BMW engines and how that turned out. lol
@@biggiefitz6275 you must be joking... b58s are killers especially in the 240i
@@biggiefitz6275this is not your dad’s BMW. They are totally different today.
Did you check to make sure you had "high speed" tires first!!?? 😂
That kid Casey is such a nerd lol, he probably wasn’t even born when that Supra came out.
Tommy - “The one thing about the Supra is the manual transmission is a little dim witted.” Okay, maybe when you’re driving, Tommy. ;)
We drag raced the gr mk1 & a supra back in 2022 the supra runs in the 13s the gr managed 12.7 both manuals
I didn't know that the turbo Supra came with a auto gear box. I thought only the non turbos did.
Yeah it’s not fun with the 4spd auto. I knew someone who had one and having driven one with a Getrag 6 it was meh. Many JDM imports are auto too 😓
18:11 The Corolla looks massive next to the Supra.
Great vid. Can we get a 700 hp New edge Cobra vs a new gen gt500 ?
All you have to do is go single turbo, full simple bolts on; full exhaust system, intake, on that auto transmission you will blow most modern car out the water. If you want a fast Supra you eventually would go built automatic anyway.
Do this race with a manual, stock Supra and it would have been lights out for the GR.
I'm sorry guys. You can make the Corolla go 500mph, but it will always be 5 door family hatchback. The Supra will ALWAYS be an icon.
Its not nearly 20 years old my man, it's nearly 30 years old.
The Supra: "I'm the best car ever"
Also Supra: *has to be modified to beat anything*
Having a 2jz on stock is like having a lion in a zoo cage!
My dad owns a stock 1997 Deep Jewel Green 6 speed manual Anniversary edition with tan interior. He's owned it since 97 and loves taking it to shows and sharing it with the younger generation!
Now we need this but with both manual cars , mayne throw in a a91 aswell to slap the b58 in there to .. would be a cool comparison, and im just a butthurt for a standard trans .. i hate autos lol , its disconnecting imo , you lose so much of your road to driver connection.. but still cool content guys .. peace and love all, keep it rad, stay safe, and build on.. ps i wish we got the GR yaris in the USA, now that would be a rad comparison, plus juat a rad ride imo .. anyways 💪🏽🤘🏽🤙🏽✌🏽
Next point
2) The 4th gen Supra was underrated, about 30hp.
I don't think they were doing a straight comparison, but seeing how they would do, the GR is quicker
5:57 James, I have some bad news for you.....your Supra just lost to a Corolla.
