hey guys so i hope this video helps anyone who is experiencing this problem with their tail lights from melting , inconsistent connection, throwing error codes, or bulbs going out due to this common fault... it really is a very simple fix... my apologies for a quick and crap job on the soldering... make sure if you do solder..do it properly and make a secure and solid connection...i only wanted to show what you need to do ..but i decided to take it abit further as i know alot of ppl are very visual when it comes to an explanation so i did that quickly so i could show what i meant...... wish everyone luck who attempts this ... its much faster then getting Mercedes to do it and honestly ive seen how Mercedes can do a flimsy job themselves ...at least this way you can be sure you did it correctly and it will last above all

Hello friend! I don't know how I missed that video but saw it today and already fixed it. Awesome video, couldn't be explained better! Really easy fix although I had some problems to solder wire to the part of plate - maybe because I put flux on it and it didn't want to 'catch' solder. I work with soldering iron a lot with PCB boards and flux is the must with these but here seems it worked other way because even if I washed flux it got under the plate and when made this place hot, still some flux on the top. I repaired right side which was causing problems and I think I'm going to do the same with left side to be 100% sure problem is solved forever. Thanks for shootout and all the best for you my friend!

Well done. As an electrical fault finder, I zeroed in pretty quick. I bolted through the common frame with 2.5mm wire. Bolted to car frame. Right side fixed.
Left side was ok. But going to do the upgrade for peace of mind.
But , yes. You got rid of the gal first for soldering. I chose to drill.

So I just got some sequential LED tail lights and am wondering bc I don’t wanna redo the connectors how you would bolt it to the frame? How did you do this? How did it work? Would this cause electrical issues down the road?

    • @kevinmorton4439
      @kevinmorton4439 Год назад +2

@@SkyBurke-if2in On the right rear side , In where the tail light connections are. There is a welded bolt with other negative connections on it. I made a bigger wire with a crimped lug And bolted it to the car. I bought a new multi pin plugs for the new tail lights from ebay. And connected my new negative wire , to the wire going to the negative pin.

      @SkyBurke-if2in Год назад

@@kevinmorton4439 as an electrical fault finder, what do you think my problem is? On my OEM taillights the middle strip of tail light is supposed to light up on the right side, but the top strip lights up instead. It works perfectly fine on my left side, but the right is just the wrong lights lighting up. Fast forward and I installed these new tail lights and the problem persists, the wrong blinker lights up. So I have my sequential on my left side but my fog light lights up on my right side for my blinker.
Is this a SAM issue? a wiring harness issue? I really don’t believe it’s the tail lights because it’s done the same thing thru 2 sets.
Other than that they work perfectly fine.
Any suggestions would really help, I’m frustrated I got sequential lights for the right side to not be sequential.

On my 08 W204 I had the dimming problem for about a month and just yesterday it started throwing no brake light codes and since today the indicator light is now also out could it be this issue? Quick question I would like to have a friend do it with soldering but I want to be sure this is the issue is there anyway to test if this fixes it? Could I buy the negative wire and scratch the metal plate and stick it on with tape or anything else before permanently moddifying and drilling a hole in my car could I then also tape it to the frame inside or where do you suggest me to stick it temporary to in the car?

Just had this issue with my W204. The earth in the connector had completly burnt away. I fixed it in a similar way before seeing this video. One issue I had was that I just couldn't solder onto the metal earth on the backing plate even after cleaning it down to bare metal. It just wouldn't tin. I ended up drilling a hole through the metal in a suitable place and fixing the new earth wire with a self tapping screw and crimped ring.

I have just sorted this on my mate's Mercedes C220 W204.
The total draw on all of these bulbs if they were to be on simultaneously is 9.4A.
The 5 large bulbs draw 1.8A each an the 1 side lamp bulb draws 400mA.
So you're not going to have any issues with the individual lamp circuits fro a current perspective.
But how likely is it, you might ask, you're going to have all of the lamps on at any given time?
    Not likely.
So I don't think it's necessarily a matter of under spec cable for the ground wire.
It's not like they all have this problem.
If it was you would expect the same issue on the other side of the car.
In my mate's case it is just on the left cluster.
I think the problem is the crimping on that wire. Too tight.
Squashes the copper to such an extent that it reduces the cross sectional area of the cable
and therefore dramatically increases the resistance at that point and thus the heat damaging the cable.
So I decided to upgrade the brown ground wire to 20A cable and solder the connector to the cable instead
of crimping. Just on that cable. I then spliced that new cable to the original brown cable using a WAGO
splicer which is good for 32A.
Probably a little bit of overkill. A decent crimp on the original brown wire would probably be fine.
I just wanted to make sure it didn't happen again given it's my mate's car not mine.
    Anyway.
    Thanks for the video.

Hey many I did this yesterday and it worked. But today I went to turn on my car and it was dead. Is there any possible reason for this? I believe I followed it all correctly. I did the screw method and not the soldering method. Maybe I left a light on last night and did not see. Has to leave for work and can’t do anything to it right now. Going to try to jump it tonight. @@MIKEYZVLOGZ thanks for the reply. I'm sure it's the related problem because it's a 2011 C300 and my friend never took care of the recall when she got the notice many years ago. The exact messages are "Check rear left sidemarker lamp" and "check front right parking lamp". It's been there for ever for her and I figured it would be an easy fix after watching your video. I ordered the exact same multimeter that you had. After my first message, I went out and bought another wire, this time from an autoshop which is a 14 gauge wire with 17 maximum amp. I put eye lets on both sides and swapped out the cable from today but same problem.
What I am confused about is this. I noticed everyone places the black wire tester on the connector where the brown wire connects, then they use the red wire tester to touch a spot on the plate and listen for a beep. That's how I determined where to drill. The problem is should it beep when you have the black wire tester on any of the other connectors (not just where the brown wire goes)? I get the same beeping no matter which connector I touch with the black wire tester.
When it's all connected and put back in place I stick in the black tester into the brown slot with the brown wire and the red tester on where I grounded and it beeps. I move the black tester to any other color wire and it still beeps. So I'm confused why the beeps are the same no mater which wire I'm testing.

and follow up to your question. At this time I'm not sure how to tell amps. When I test, I get 3 numbers that come up with the beep on the multimeter and I'm not sure which is amp or what the numbers mean. I just listen for the beep which seems like what others are doing.

ok so you. an always buy a new connector via ebay or aliexpress and simple cut and solder or even use butt connectors... that way it's an easy cut splice solder..or use butt connectors... either way as long as u follow the way the harness plugs in u won't go wrong
but if u wanted to remove the existing pins u would need a pin like tool or u can buy a plug harness removal tool they sell for about 10 dollars or less online I used it in my video about changing out the 12v cigarette lighter port to a dual usb port with battery display
