I believe it dates back to when motors were in the tender, the toolings had full tenders to leave space for the motor, so most older toolings have full tenders
Your “getting started on model railways” video has really helped me know what to do for and with model trains. I hope to get a few Hornby assets for my birthday!
"Knocked for six". I had to look that one up. I'm always learning something from Sam's videos - usually about British rail - now about UK slang and cricket.
18:30 motor swap: you may be able to up-spec the motor to five-pole, by keeping the motor shell and just change the armature for a five. this requires some careful measuring and sourcing. alternatively remove the armature windings, skew the armature plates a few degrees (5/6/7 deg?? ish), then replace the windings. when you rewind you can use different gauge wire and / or more / fewer turns to up the current flow - and thus the power characteristics of the motor. standard slot racing tactic back in the mid sixties.
Ah, the unrebuilt Pats. Famous for - the 2hr London-Birmingham flyers, the Manchester/Liverpool-Glasgow trains and the Liverpool (both from Lime Street and Exchange) - Newcastle trains, although they usually were engine swapped at Leeds City. Oh, and used to be often seen doing the London-Blackpool trains too.
I have 5530 Sir Frank Ree and yes it has tender pickups and a 21 pin socket. Mine also came with etched nameplates. Although mine seems to be missing the steps and doors in the packet and it was purchased new.
An amazing videos Sam. Really enjoyed hearing the history on the magnificent model. Can not wait to see more videos like this. An amazing loco very interesting. Hope you enjoy your new locomotive. Take care of yourself
Trying to multitask right now. On TSW waiting for a class 31 hauled railtour on the East Coastway while watching. Just found a nice trick to see the railtour with a loco of your choice by choosing the loco, then leaving the train and riding on the train to Eastborne. The railtour will be close behind, so you can get off wherever you want to see it!
I have the Bachmann Jubilee. It has a similar mechanism. It's coming apart and going to rebuild it so it looks and performs like a hornby loco which should bring it up to standard with all my other express engines, all of which except the jubilee are hornby
When looking at old pictures of the new Patriot, one set of shots that intrigues me shows the loco with its smokebox, but no boiler (or side rods or tender). I've also been considering incorporating a boiler-less image when developing a background for my Urie G16 OC.
This engine looks marvellous. We may not have any of the original LMS Patriots around anymore, but at least one new member is being rebuilt from scratch, which of course is the Unknown Warrior.
Lucky enough to see several prototypes at Bristol TM in the early 60's when I was a train spotting kid .Didn't see many as (as you said ) they started scrapping them early doors .
My later version 31-204 Sir Frank Ree does have a slightly more detailed cab and tender pickups. Looking at the exploded view of the mechanism, it looks the same.
Can’t wait until the stream tomorrow- I can see that you have some exciting new locos! I have just ordered an LNER black Oxford N7 and I am super excited!
I do like the Patriot, especially in crimson livery. Let's hope Bachmann's new 'Unknown Warrior' addresses the issues you raised, Sam, especially a 5-pole motor and metal axle boxes.
Picked mine up for £60 in a local 2nd hand shop. I haven't had any issues with motor performance with it, but it does seem a bit short on haulage power compared to other locos in my collection. Does look beautiful though
£60 is much much more like it - glad to hear yours run well too! Yes I've had a few other comments saying theirs are weak too! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Given that they are both models of the same locomotive, there might be a way to fettle the bachmann bodywork to accept a Hornby railroad chassis, might be worth checking the retailers (or eBay) for a cheap pre-owned railroad patriot and try fitting the bachmann bodywork to it
That does look stunning in the LMS Maroon, a shame about the motor, for me that makes it a no buy. Not much point buying a loco with a bad mechanism. It was nice seeing the Applegreen Patriot running again, I remember seeing that in one of your videos from way back. I really think it fits the rebuilt Patriot. Also, the odd one out is the D49.
I remember that some of the more modern lms patriot the ones with the more standard boiler were name after country’s of Canada like Ontario, New Brunswick the list goes on.
We need an Oxford modell review in the near future....i cant see this anymore! Bachmann: Good Details, Stupid Mechanism Horby: Good Mechanism, 80% Plastic..... And the sentence "i cant see this anymore!" was more a funny way! Keep the good work Sam! 😂👍🏻
I will order my Patriot soon. Can't wait to see The Unkown Warrior when it is done. Will be very interesting to see another Fowler design on the mainline again.
is the bachmann motor common to most of their types? maybe you could find a wrecked engine and salvage its motor? would be curious to know if you could fit one of those replacement 5-pole motors anyway. sad that it has overheating problems when they could have used that metal plate as a heatsink.
Hi Sam. I have got one of the newer ones from Bachmann. Can't remmber how much I paid. Mine is a BR green one. It's got the 21 pin DCC socket in. It does have tender pick ups. The Cab detail is a bit better. But I would say the mechanism is the same as yours. I find it a little under powered. I have the latest Hornby one which is a great model it's much heavier and can pull more. But the newer bachmann one comes with etched name plates in the extra detail
A friend runs a large layout with mainly bachmann and his locos clock colossal mileages a year. He's never had any trouble with any post split chassis bachmann locos wearing out, so really don't get too hung up about the wheel bearings
They named it unknown warrior as they started the project off with the charity help for heroes who are a charity that support all British military personnel who have been injured in the line of duty. The name comes from a soldier who couldn't be identified after WW1.
It reminds me a lot of Big City Engine in The Railway Series, he appeared in the episode in "Gordon Goes Foreign" in Eight Famous Engines, episode planned for the second season but it was canceled due to the big budget to build locomotives, stations and wagons. Too bad we didn't get to see Big City Engine in the series.
Once the unknown warrior is completed, she must be in lms red livery. And I have seen her cab in British Railways Brunswick green, but lms red is most appropriate for an engine built post br.
The Patriot Locomotives look so nice, but I wished that there was one preserved instead of scrapping them all, however I am happy that there is one new one being built.
I’m so annoyed at the fact that my brand new N7 has just stopped working. (Story time): I noticed it was making quite the noise when running after I first got it at Xmas but didn’t take any notice in it. I got my layout out the other day and fired her up, I headed to the toilet and come back and she’s making a horrid sound and had completely stopped running I immediately thought it had just got stuck on the junction and gave it a push, it just began to slide along the track, so I took it downstairs with my mini screwdriver kit and committed an operation to try and figure out what was causing it (this was my first time taking apart a loco), I cleared away some dust in the arches and wheels put her back together, thinking this would have been the problem I placed her back on the track and she had just given up on life fully and didn’t run so I’ve now got to wait till my model train shop reopens again to try and get a specialist to take a look...
Ooh dear sorry to hear that mate! If you had it for Christmas, that's less than 6 months ago - so you should be entitled to a full refund/replacement - make sure you contact them straight away, so that they know this happened within the warranty! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love rails of Sheffield. Always have good deals on eBay, being a Brit modeling modern USA railroads they've been a godsend when it comes to wagons and other rolling stock :D
I love the Patriot class, and Bachmann do seem to make the best detailed model... but given the very iffy mechanism, I think I'll stick with my Hornby Patriots - I have an old one and a newer one, and they're both solid runners, and good looking on the layout from a distance, even if they show up a bit against the Bachmann when you get close to some of the detailing.
Speaking of fowler, I got the BR black 4p tank engine and it is very impressive. Also, do you still have that mainline collet goods loco because maybe you could do another review on it?
Great to hear that Jacob - yes they are amazing models! Yes I do have the Collett, and I will be reviewing a later Bachmann version! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Why is a six-coach train seen as an acceptable load when, in N gauge nine or ten is quite normal? Is it that the larger scale makes the longer train more problematic or is the OO modeller more easily pleased?
Hi Sam. As you say, externally it is a beautiful model. Do you mean that the Bachmann and Chinese motors are completely incompatible? Presumably, you couldn't swap the Hornby motor for the Bachmann?
Speaking of the Patriot Class, there's a Thomas & Friends locomotive that's based on this exact locomotive, but he only appears in the Railway Series and not the Television Series. The engine is called the 'Big City Engine' although I'm not sure if he had an actual name other than 'Big City Engine', I don't think his real name is mentioned anywhere, even on the Wikipedia page. I guess this is what he refers himself as, interesting. If you haven't seen him before, search up 'Big City Engine' on Google and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Hiya Sam - In my Collection I only have 2 4-6-0 :- British Railways Light Green Welbeck Abbey No. 61619 which came with the Hornby 'Signature Range' - East linc Special and also... British Railways Light Green West Ham United No. 61672 which came with the 'East Coast Express' set ( I have a few other 4-6-0's but they are static models & in this instance - don't really count!!!) Any way what make this interesting is...They both have a wire going from the Loco to the tender - now this is the interesting bit...with the '61619' if I put the Tender on the track only & lift the Loco slight off the track (so the wheels don't touch the track) - the wheels will turn in mid air!!! But if I do the same with the 61672 Loco - does the same happen??? NOPE - the wheels do not turn - the wire is for the Chip only & NO Pick-ups on the Tender wheels :( Also NO Pick-ups on both of the front 'Pony wheels' on the Locos!!!
Great glass case modellers item. Sensible idea to review the Bachmann back catalogue rather than buying new! When you undid it I noticed it had a nylon gear like the loco in the Hornby Anglian Set, which also has no tender pickups. The Bachmann Patriot must be a version of the earlier Mainline model since Kader Industries which owns Bachmann bought out Palitoy which owned Mainline. I think the re-use of old tooling to create a new release of a model at high price is one of the oldest tricks in the book! Thanks for uploading.
Thanks Allen - yes I couldn't justify the recent asking price, for sure! This isn't based on the Mainline though - that one was much more basic! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It’s Baby Scott! Or the foreign engine, depending where you learned you locomotive classes. Also, Sam, what was the livery of the DJM well tank you returned?
hello sam i went on hattons and the one on there is £152 and im wondering if i should give it a try and I think the LMS maroon on this model looks so beautiful and will you be getting the new one and love the video from david
Sam, you're making me fall in love with British Steam!!! 💘😁👍👍 That is indeed a beautiful Model. Shame that the mechanism lets it down so much. I'd have to say that the new one, having the electronics in the Tender, SHOULD have Tender pickups. Carmine ✈🚂🚙
haha glad to hear that Carmine! Yeah I agree - it's a shame! Others have said the latest releases do have some pickups on the tender - at least! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Like so many locos Sam, they seem to be made for static display not regular operations due to the poor mechanisms used. I became very disheartened with after long running sessions, the coupling rods would wear at the pins that fixed them to the wheels. Locos that are now over 40 years old, don't have the problem at all...Ah well that's my moan of the day...Thanks again for your frank and honest review...Bob
If I was a model railway enthusiast, I'd probably go for the Hornby Railroad version because it's a lot cheaper than Bachmann's version and also it has a better mechanism than Bachmann's version. Even though it's not super detailed, it's still suitable for beginners who are into model railways! :D
Hi Sam. Thanks for reviewing this great looking patriot, I'd put my money down on a hornby one though as you say far superior mechanism. Cheers mate keep up the good work 👍
Fowler Tenders are truly beautiful. Bachmann's coal load is unique too, never seen a coal load that wasn't full to the top
Yeah I think so too - just so lovely!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I believe it dates back to when motors were in the tender, the toolings had full tenders to leave space for the motor, so most older toolings have full tenders
Can you giveaway the GWR grey saddletank engine to me Sam?
Your “getting started on model railways” video has really helped me know what to do for and with model trains. I hope to get a few Hornby assets for my birthday!
Lovely to hear that Devin - hope you have fun!!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam when a train has something wrong with it
*Heljan flashbacks*
Heljan is another name for Hel(l)
@@lukeslocomotives tell that to the garrat
I saw that too, had to put it back to double check it wasnt my own flashback lol
Why are you doing this just fix it
Melissa Chambers He can’t repair model he reviews in its video, otherwise it would be different than the consumer’s product.
I've just come back to this channel after a while, and I had forgotten how brilliant it is
Ahh you're very kind mate - thanks a lot!! :D
"Knocked for six". I had to look that one up. I'm always learning something from Sam's videos - usually about British rail - now about UK slang and cricket.
haha - I'm full of horrible phrases, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
18:55 What an amazing shot of all 3 locomotives running at the same time! :D
haha thank you!! :D
Yes I've often thought of it Raymond - I keep searching for a suitable replacement - your idea sounds very interesting!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for the comment Robert - wish I could have seen one of the originals :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have 5530 Sir Frank Ree and yes it has tender pickups and a 21 pin socket. Mine also came with etched nameplates. Although mine seems to be missing the steps and doors in the packet and it was purchased new.
Ooh that's good to hear! Do you know whether the loco mechanism has seen any upgrades?!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great review Sam I have duke of Sutherland but in the old hornby tender drive and it is really good
Thanks a lot David - ahh yes the Hornby ones were always lovely! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The LMS crimson looks great on that loco!
Amazing review as always Sam!
-Dj (:
Thanks DJ - I think it does too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
An amazing videos Sam. Really enjoyed hearing the history on the magnificent model. Can not wait to see more videos like this. An amazing loco very interesting. Hope you enjoy your new locomotive. Take care of yourself
Thanks very much Luke - glad you liked that mate!! :D

Ooh sounds like quite a challenge - good luck mate! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The red paint is beautiful, I think it’s called Tuscan red Pennsylvania railroad had locomotives painted in this stunning red!
The LMS Always described their livery as Crimson Lake but it’s probably a very similar shade
Thomas Thornton thanks for the info I’m very interested in British steam locomotives!
Thanks for this folks - yes I think we call it Crimson Lake! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have the Bachmann Jubilee. It has a similar mechanism. It's coming apart and going to rebuild it so it looks and performs like a hornby loco which should bring it up to standard with all my other express engines, all of which except the jubilee are hornby
Ahh okay - I'm not surprised that those are similar! Hope your rebuild goes well! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Bit more about this loco:
Numbers: 5903, 5541,45541
Names: Duke Of Sutherland
Built: August 1933 at Crewe
Rebuilt: -
Withdrawn: June 1962
Many thanks for the extra info Luke! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
When looking at old pictures of the new Patriot, one set of shots that intrigues me shows the loco with its smokebox, but no boiler (or side rods or tender). I've also been considering incorporating a boiler-less image when developing a background for my Urie G16 OC.
Ahh interesting! I'll have to look up those photos!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Beautiful model Sam! Can’t wait for the replica to be completed!
Thanks Ryno - me too mate! :D
This engine looks marvellous. We may not have any of the original LMS Patriots around anymore, but at least one new member is being rebuilt from scratch, which of course is the Unknown Warrior.
Thanks Tomas - yes it's lovely isn't it?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Lucky enough to see several prototypes at Bristol TM in the early 60's when I was a train spotting kid .Didn't see many as (as you said ) they started scrapping them early doors .
Very impressive Geoffry - wish I could have seen some! Fantastic!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hornby has the rebuilt Patriots which they are still available on their website and the retailers also have them Sam's Trains.
Thanks! I will look out for one!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My later version 31-204 Sir Frank Ree does have a slightly more detailed cab and tender pickups. Looking at the exploded view of the mechanism, it looks the same.
Ahh glad to hear they made some small improvements then - still, that mechanism is very poor for the price!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, great video as always. I would like to recommend the Bachmann standard 3MT tank engine, it is a lovely model and works🤞really well
Thanks very much Bob - yes I'll be looking into that one soon hopefully! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My quest to see the class 31 railtour was successful! Shame the service in front didn't stop at every station, but at least I saw it!
Ahh fantastic to hear that - well done!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Can’t wait until the stream tomorrow- I can see that you have some exciting new locos!
I have just ordered an LNER black Oxford N7 and I am super excited!
Thanks so much mate, yes indeed! Ooh nice - hope you enjoy that!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I do like the Patriot, especially in crimson livery. Let's hope Bachmann's new 'Unknown Warrior' addresses the issues you raised, Sam, especially a 5-pole motor and metal axle boxes.
4:55 The front set of bogey wheels looks pretty weird when the Patriot Class is lifted off the ground.
Ooh yeah!! ;D
I've got a Patriot Class one myself with the LMS red livery on it. It was in Hornby's Railroad range in the early 2010's
Ahh lovely - yes those are way better runners than this one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm loving all the reviews on the locomotives Sam.
Glad you like them mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Saw a Patriot in the early 60's at Leicester London Road Station. Very unusual, great excitment for us young trainspotters.
Ooh very nice - that must have been amazing to see!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Given that they are both models of the same locomotive, there might be a way to fettle the bachmann bodywork to accept a Hornby railroad chassis, might be worth checking the retailers (or eBay) for a cheap pre-owned railroad patriot and try fitting the bachmann bodywork to it
Yes I've thought about that too Simon - never tried it as of yet though!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The odd one out: the k1 at toytown south- it's a mogul!
Very well spotted lettuce - that's it! :D
I thought is was an older model due to the space between loco and tender. It is a lovely model.
Yes it's a shame about that - can be adjusted though I think! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks a lot Patrick - I know mate, it's such a let down :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I remember that some of the more modern lms patriot the ones with the more standard boiler were name after country’s of Canada like Ontario, New Brunswick the list goes on.
Ahh very cool - I hadn't made that connection before! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
45500 - 45551 were the Patriots. The engines youre talking about is the Stanier development of them, the Jubilees numbers 45552-45742
Lms crimson has to be my favourite livery!😄
I know it - so lovely!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
We need an Oxford modell review in the near future....i cant see this anymore!
Bachmann: Good Details, Stupid Mechanism
Horby: Good Mechanism, 80% Plastic.....
And the sentence "i cant see this anymore!" was more a funny way!
Keep the good work Sam! 😂👍🏻
haha I know! More Oxford coming soon mate!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Couldn't you just solder in a new 5 poll motor in place of the 3 poll one, that should be possible right?
i’m new to trains and i am in love with steam locomotives! especially this one thanks Sam!!
Great to hear that Gab, cheers! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I will order my Patriot soon. Can't wait to see The Unkown Warrior when it is done. Will be very interesting to see another Fowler design on the mainline again.
Oh fantastic - I can't wait either!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video
Can't wait for the live!
I'll definitely be there!!
:D
Thanks so much Squiddy - hope you enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
is the bachmann motor common to most of their types? maybe you could find a wrecked engine and salvage its motor?
would be curious to know if you could fit one of those replacement 5-pole motors anyway.
sad that it has overheating problems when they could have used that metal plate as a heatsink.
Yes, they use this model very often in their models! I'm yet to find a good replacement, but I am looking!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I wonder if you could modify the Bachmann body on the Hornby chassis (bit of lockdown kit bashing)?
I've thought about that - well worth trying some time! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks very much for confirming Jason - very interesting! Yes I've always found mine a bit on the weak side too :/
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I must say that this is beautiful, and the reason why I am late is because i was watching a film with the family and then had to run to Tesco
Thanks a lot mate, that's okay - hope you had a good time! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
No proper bearings on a loco that expensive! That's awful!
I agree mate!
A friend runs a large layout with mainly bachmann and his locos clock colossal mileages a year. He's never had any trouble with any post split chassis bachmann locos wearing out, so really don't get too hung up about the wheel bearings
@@TIMMEH19991 I agree, it depends on how often you run the locomotives and at what speeds.
I would still buy it
Hell, I probably broke my Scotsman while it was going like 100mph
I remember the days of 55k subs, well done Sam!
I know it - can't believe how quickly they're going up! Thanks so much for the support! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
“Unknown Warrior”, what an interesting name for a rebuilt version of the Patriot Class locomotive! :P
haha it's not rebuilt if you get what I mean! LOL
They named it unknown warrior as they started the project off with the charity help for heroes who are a charity that support all British military personnel who have been injured in the line of duty. The name comes from a soldier who couldn't be identified after WW1.
Yeah I think so too - a very cool name! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Suppose I will have to explain to my history teacher why I'm taking a 30 minute break from my schoolwork...
haha good luck! xD
A real beauty, I have the hornby Patriot Bradshaw in BR Brunswick Green.
Thanks Alex - yes I have that one too - a far superior mechanism on those!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Once the unknown warrior is completed, she must be in lms red livery. And I have seen her cab in British Railways Brunswick green, but lms red is most appropriate for an engine built post br.
I know - I'm really hoping she will be! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Shockingly there isn’t a rebuilt of the class that has the Maroon livery with yellow lining.
Weren’t there two of these things painted green in real life? Along with some of the Patriot Class?
The Patriot Locomotives look so nice, but I wished that there was one preserved instead of scrapping them all, however I am happy that there is one new one being built.
Thanks Lewis - yeah me too, it's a shame isn't it? :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Plus I love the LMS Crimson color.
Me too mate! :D
Sam'sTrains nice : D
Cool model. Return cranks are the wrong way round for piston valve
Do you have all your engines in shelfs? Or are some in boxes? And how much engines do you have?
Yeah mostly they're on shelves - I have round 400! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love rails of Sheffield. Always have good deals on eBay, being a Brit modeling modern USA railroads they've been a godsend when it comes to wagons and other rolling stock :D

Thanks a lot Alex - ooh that sounds pretty cool!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Why is a six-coach train seen as an acceptable load when, in N gauge nine or ten is quite normal? Is it that the larger scale makes the longer train more problematic or is the OO modeller more easily pleased?
On my layout it's acceptable - since the floor slopes - making lesser loads more impressive!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam. As you say, externally it is a beautiful model. Do you mean that the Bachmann and Chinese motors are completely incompatible? Presumably, you couldn't swap the Hornby motor for the Bachmann?
Cheers Paul - the ones I've tried are completely incompatible unfortunately :(

Ooh very nice!! Was that a Patriot, or a Scot?? I remember hearing about that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam my Hornby black 5 with TTS sound is broken the steam windows are snap I am so sad it was a at a good price
Ahh sorry to hear that Joel :(
This is steam locomotive LMS Sam's train it's wonderful actually. When u has steam how do you know that things.
Thanks a lot mate! I read up on these locos quite a bit! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
you should get a princess coronation in crimson red its beautiful even in railroad range
I do have one! They really are lovely! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hiya Sam - In my Collection I only have 2 4-6-0 :-
British Railways Light Green Welbeck Abbey No.
Ahh very lovely Jimmy - I love those two!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I was wondering how you calculate your overall locomotive ratings from your star ratings?
It's quite involved - the numbers get put into a weighted equation which produces the score out of 10! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think the LMS maroon is the best livery yet Sam what’s your favourite livery
Thanks mate, yeah it has to be one of the best! I really love the SECR Green! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I really like trains and I would love to have a layout but it’s all so expensive lol, how should I save up money?
Cheers mate - I agree it's expensive, but you can do well if you look carefully, and pick up bargains! Good luck! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Try finding a motor in the US, Bachmann uses it a lot in their models here
Good idea! I do search for them from time to time! :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
that build plate says (built 1933 crewe)
Ooh nice - thanks for that mate! :D
I have the old hornby railways duke of Sutherland and I love it.
Ooh nice - those are real classics! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I really like engines with smoke deflectors
Yeah me too actually! :D
It’s Baby Scott! Or the foreign engine, depending where you learned you locomotive classes. Also, Sam, what was the livery of the DJM well tank you returned?
haha yes indeed! That was in the photographic grey livery! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains, ok Sam! Thank you!
I have the exact same Patriot, love the model, a bargain for the £85 I paid, though I could never pay £180 for such model
Ahh fantastic - they were a far better purchase when they were at those prices!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hello sam i went on hattons and the one on there is £152 and im wondering if i should give it a try and I think the LMS maroon on this model looks so beautiful and will you be getting the new one and love the video from david
Ahh that's not too bad, still quite a lot though, given the mechanism :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brilliant review Sam out of all the ngines you own what is your favourite?
Thanks a lot! Probably the Bachmann C1 for me! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains yourwelcome hope you stay safe during this pandemic
Couldn't you fit a 5 pole motor into it? or are there dimensional variations?
Not easily - I'm yet to find a motor that fits (or nearly fits), I am on the look out though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I don't know what brand to like best to be honest. Although I would lean more towards hornby
haha yeah - I think I would too!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam, you fancy a Pennsylvania Railroad duplex? They had T1's, a Q series, an S1, and a few more.
That sounds awesome - I'll look out for one of those! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Is there enough space to replace that 3-pole with one on the 5-poles that you bought Sam?
There may be, but it's not an easy job - the mountings are very different :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam, you're making me fall in love with British Steam!!! 💘😁👍👍
That is indeed a beautiful Model.
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Since you comment on my video my mehano Is running well now
Thanks Sam
Ahh glad to hear that Juan, my pleasure! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah you're right Bob - it's a great shame about that really :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I hope the latest patriot will get a better motor at least decent.
I hope so, but I don't expect so - hopefully someone will shed some light!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam what is your best advice for model railways?
haha depends what you want to know about - it's a pretty large field!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Why dont you get another hornby patriot (just the chassis) and put that chassis on that
I have thought about it - not sure how easy it would be to swap bodies though!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi sam i don't suppose you have any idea of which model railway retailers deliver the fastest.
That's a good question! In my experience, Hatton's and Kernow are by far the fastest! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The shape and the smoke deflectors kind of make it look like a schools class
You're right! It does actually!! xD
I have 5551 Unknown Warrior (renumber from 5541), got it for £60
If I was a model railway enthusiast, I'd probably go for the Hornby Railroad version because it's a lot cheaper than Bachmann's version and also it has a better mechanism than Bachmann's version. Even though it's not super detailed, it's still suitable for beginners who are into model railways! :D
Yeah I would too - I enjoy my Hornby Railroad ones much more than this - never any trouble!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam. Thanks for reviewing this great looking patriot, I'd put my money down on a hornby one though as you say far superior mechanism. Cheers mate keep up the good work 👍
Yeah definitely - much cheaper too of course! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hey man what type of company of trains you recommend for beginners
Hornby all the way in my opinion - they offer the best quality! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
