I remember watching a classic Thomas & Friends episode where the City of Truro made its appearance while Gordon keeps on saying “domeless engines aren’t useful”. I also remember one part of the episode where Gordon lost his dome, that was a pretty funny part in my opinion! 😂

I've got one of these. I got it from the shop in the NRM itself. Upon asking for it they said they had all sold out and would I like the nice red Midland 1000 loco instead. Disappointed I was pondering it, then this other member of staff appeared who must have been earwigging our conversation. He said he thought he had seen a CofT right at the back of a cupboard the other day. Indeed he found it, making me a happy bunny. It may well have been the last one ever sold?
It is indeed very attractive and so when my club Chesham Model Railway Club had their annual exhibition that year, I ran it on a little creamery end to end layout we had at the time. Most inappropriate, but I guessed it would be a crowd pleaser. Indeed it was getting many admiring looks. It ran fine at the time, but I haven't run it for years and was not aware of the inferior mechanism.

City of Truro a great loco in her own right. First heard of her as a kid when I watched Gordon & The Famous Visitor and both saw her & travelled behind her when visiting the Llangollen Railway's Steel Steam & Stars 2 gala during the 4-4-0 day (went from Llangollen to Carrog behind the Bo'ness Railway's D49 Morayshire, then behind Truro from Carrog to Glyndyfrdwy before returning to Llangollen behind the Bluebell's Earl of Berkeley). Irrespective of whether you believe that 1902 speed record... 😉 (mind Steam Railway magazine did timings on its 100th celebration of that record & suggested it was possible), she is a great loco 👍🏼😊

    Hi Sam,
I just purchased this loco and have managed to remove the NEM box on the spare front bogie. If you put the vacuum pipe & coupling on you really cannot see the small amount of black plastic left on the front of the leading bogie frame.
I also had a fiddle around with the wires between loco & tender. I have managed to route them away from the front axle of the tender so they do not inhibit the pickups. I think the reason the wires are so long is because the drawbar between the loco & tender can be shortened or lengthened by releasing a screw under the front of the tender, this would be more for showing the model or on very large radius curves. However, the wires can be moved to lessen the visual impact.
Mine is just waiting now for the Zimo sound decoder, keep alive & speaker to arrive.
    Keep up the great work!

    Sam: *bemoans Bachmanns mechanisms*
    Us: Wow, first time?
Also I will have to state that the complete lack of lining on the boiler bands on the TOP of the firebox is atrocious. Literally the first thing I noticed the moment you unboxed her. "Museum Quality" indeed!
EDIT: Also considder this; Bachmann Industries is owned by Kader which is based in china, their production facility is in china. Kader buys up model railway companies, close down the works in the countries of origin, shifts production to their china facility where they then "improve" the models. It's all on wikipedia if you want to verify, but expect what you get from cheap china manufacturing...
Had Hornby made this it would've been £50 more expensive but top tier stuff with an excellent mechanism that will last for many years.

Truth is both Bachmann and Hornby products presently are produced in no quality control China... Their corporate bosses have to bow to their stockholders who demand profits over quality... So the average Joe model train modeler is SCREWED big time! Retail prices continue to skyrocket while quality of the product craters... Can Sam imagine during 2020 a locomotive without sprung buffers? Ask Sam how much they cost of that 140 quid locomotive... Ask Amazon their retail price for their cheapest tablet or smart phone?

Just by looking at the Bachmann City of Truro, it looks gorgeous with all of that detail from Bachmann along with the livery it has! The City of Truro has got to be one of the most gorgeous old fashioned locomotives ever to be seen! This is why 4-4-0’s are my type of wheel configuration! It’s kinda unfortunate though that in model form, the mechanism lets this locomotive down. If it had a better mechanism, I’d say the locomotive would be decent. But at least everything else is still good about this model! I’m giving this Bachmann City of Truro locomotive a “B-”! Nice review on this beautiful 4-4-0 locomotive Sam! 😃😁👍

It’s a nice looking model for sure, I’m happy with mine. The spare front bogie is so you can cut off the NEM pocket for better aesthetics but still have the option to put a front coupling on again. It’s a shame the spare one didn’t just come without the pocket as it would have been a neater finish but it’s good that Bachmann have included it. Fair point on the mechanism, I’ve not taken mine apart yet. It does seem a cost cutting thing, just a shame the saving isn’t passed on to the consumer.

Hi Sam Excellent review as always, I agree with your comments re the chassis, I cannot help thinking it may be possible to re engineer the wheel bearings with the use or torrington needle roller bearings. I will have to try to get hold of an old block and wheels to see if there is enough meat to open out the block to accept the outside diameter of the roller bearing. If there is it would fix a load of issues in one go, such as slow speed running which would be much improved with the reduction in fiction, also due to better gear mesh due to the tighter tolerance the rollers offer it would run quieter. I should mention I am an Engineer by profession and build live steam models as well as the renewed interest in 00.
    Keep up the great reviews.
P.S. if you fancy having a go at the above conversion and have some old scarp bits we could experiment with please get in touch I would be happy to give it a go. you would need three parts axle, block and bottom plate.

IMHO, it's always cool to have locomotives that you've either seen in person or are known to still exist. Two of the ones I have in my collection, an Athearn EMD SD40-2 (NS 3500) and a Scaletrains GE C40-9 (NS 8765), are ones I've actually seen in person, though I believe NS 3500 is the only one of the two still extant today (NS 8765 was rebuilt in July of 2018 into NS 4093, a GE AC44C6M). I will admit I picked the number I did because I saw Scaletrains had it when they released their C40-9s earlier this year.

The livery is incorrect because city of Truro never had a top feed in this livery. When it acquired a top feed (demonstrated by the pipes on the side of the boiler going into the safety valves) it was renumbered 3717 and frames painted black. It might have looked like this at some point in preservation so I'll let Bachmann off.

I'm amazed at how well you presented this locomotive, Sam; given I have Truro in my collection (paying significantly less not being in the U.K.), I still find myself amazed at how handsome and gorgeous this locomotive is. The livery in the GWR Monogram with the Indian red frames is just phenomenal; not to discount the other livery, but the GWR Monogram just seems right.
One thing I've noticed about Bachmann's models, and their apparent lack of ability to install a 5-pole motor into their engines, is that they tend to run far more smoothly when converted to DCC, which makes me question why Bachmann doesn't offer models as high quality as this with DCC-installed as another option to purchase this engine.
Otherwise, I'm delighted you were fair on this; given I have so few coaches, I can advocate that the lack of its pulling strength is a bit of a disappointment. It suffered some severe wheelslip on a slight incline with just three coaches (two Bachmann, one Hornby), but I will attribute that to the 3-pole motor. Having seen video of Truro in preservation and running at speed, the longest rake of coaches I saw him pull was 8 - 9; if the model can manage that while tackling curves and inclines, then I'll say it's a pass for my collection.
I hope this has piqued your interest in some of the other Locomotion models; I hope that Evening Star from the NRM is on your list. Having the one manufactured by Bachmann for Locomotion, I always pull it out to be amazed at how handsome that freight locomotive looks in that BR Lined Green; perhaps, one day.

Totally agree with your findings Sam. Wonderfully detailed model of a very hansome class. But, that mechanism. Why oh why spoil things with a poor motor and bearings! Another great review thank you.

Thanks a lot Mike - I agree, it spoils it for me anyway! :(

There I was watching this video thinking:
Finally a Bachmann model at a not ridiculous price and it looks really good.
If it has a decent mechanism I might get one ...... Oh dear!

Yep you're right - almost perfect, except that awful mechanism :(

At 14:00 thats actually a really interesting thing that no 00 scale models have been released with working inside valvegear. While expensive theres no reason it cant be done. Could be fun for perhaps a limited edition locomotive. Although the inside motion is pretty hard to see anyway. The only locomotives I can think of that would truly benefit from it would be the LNER N2 and perhaps the Bulleid Q1's?

Yeah you're right - it's very frivolous, but I'd love to see it done!! ;D
