Vatsim introduced me to the role of ATC some years ago, I liked it, did it online as a hobby.. now I get paid to do it in one of the busiest airspaces in the world! Wonderful carreer!
Where did you originally learn all of the procedures in order to get started? Did it cost money? Looking to get into it and apply next time the FAA has open bids. Thanks!
Bennet Riley i don’t know how it works in the United States. In our case, the ANSP was recruiting new people. Did selection tests, then they sent us to a specialized school for a year to learn all the basics. In our case, we didn’t spend a cent. We actually got paid a salary
I used to be incredibly shy on frequency and would often disconnect when asked something by controllers. Now I control at Atlanta And have twice as many hours controlling than flying! It has also opened up tons of doors for me, as I have now interned in the real world at Atlanta now. If you are shy on frequency and don’t know how to respond, I would suggest becoming a controller online!
I am a teenager getting into the more technical areas of flight simulators (I use MSFS2020) and I understand ATC and traffic management, but yet I struggle to physically control a plane so I want to try controlling because I think it might be more interesting for me!
Nothing "unfortunate" about having to go through some training to become a VATSIM controller. It is crucial. It is one of the few online gaming/simulation roles that just wouldn't work if anyone could jump into the role.

Really amazing video. You explain everything so clearly and although the video is 28 minutes long every part is very interesting and learned so much. Thank you for making this video
I’m a ground controller at Denver on vatsim (currently working towards tower) and it’s super fun, although I have to agree with the parenting plan part. I normally love to control during events but those 5% of pilots that don’t know what they’re doing can be very frustrating.
For anyone who want to become ATC on VATSIM don't go to overcrowded divisions try to look for smaller ones (with active members) and you will get mentor and training faster. Just small pro tip
MARKAN no not true at all. You will get 100x better training in VATSIM UK for example than others, you might have to train for longer but that’s because they train to a high standard
I would argue your 2nd negative can be something positive as well. You can make a positive impact, you can teach the next generation. Yeah some people will fuck up the taxi or maybe they even crash the landing, these things can happen. Of course it would be ideal if everyone already had a great understanding, but then again as you said sometimes ATC can be a bit boring especially in lower traffic situations and surely you got the time on hand to help a newer VATSIM pilot out. Think about it this way, many of those often very young VATSIM pilots might just be the future pilots of our world, or maybe they will become ATCs themselves. They are exited about flying and exited enought about the actual procedures that they installed VATSIM after flying for a while. They often are nervous and shy about making any mistakes so you can really have a positive impact and show them that they are welcome. I think most people can relate well, we all have started flying at some point and I dare the first guy who has never crashed a plane in the sim to raise his hand. So yeah in a couple of weeks these people might start feeling more confident and enjoy VATSIM and start being more experienced. Maybe they will even fly to and from your Airport more often, especially if you had a positive impact on them and the traffic is low and they feel like their mistakes are corrected in a positive way they can learn from rather than being negative about it.
I'm currently a student controller in ZBW ARTCC. It's way more difficult than you think. Especially for someone from Europe. The phraseology is different. The procedures are different. Even in training you're required to be 100% focused. Hopefully sooner or later I'll be certified.
I have learned to fly the PMDG 737 and Aerosoft A320 quite well--use Simbrief and Navigraph. I have not yet had the courage to fly on Vatsim. Would you recommend learning to fly on Vatsim first and then try and become a controller or the other way round? I am pretty sure learning what ATC does makes you a better pilot!
You are very welcome to fly to/from one of the best airports in Europe. Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro (LPPR/OPO). Most likely you'll find me manning the APP, controlling Porto TMA.
Where can you originally learn all of the procedures in order to get started, besides going through an actual school? Is there a resource online? Does it cost money? Looking to get into it and apply next time the FAA has open bids. Thanks!
To be like ground or delivery you need a training with a real world teacher that watch what you’re doing or you just need to like read some slides and take a written test (like for become a pilot on varsim)?

Does the country and VACC that u fill out when u sign up, does that effect who you will be flying with? If I’m in US and I want to fly in Europe, does that mean I’m only flying with other Americans in Europe?
HI there, am a real world pilot and as well as pilot at Vatsim network, i want to start controlling as well at Vatsim, should i open up a new account as an ATC or i can still use my pilot account and become an ATC as well?
You can only use one account on the vatsim network. Which means that you will need to use your pilot account which your have been using to fly and start becoming one.
Also keep in mind VATSIM isn't the only option if you want to become an ATC. I'm a controller on the IVAO network, which is very active in Europe. One difference is that you can start right away controlling smaller airports as ground or even tower, without having to do an exam. So you could literally get started in a week. (obviously you should still prepare by observing and reading the training material.)

Pretty much said "Next time state which ATIS you have and which arrival you're on so I don't have to ask you and waste time" which you can't really defend yourself and you just have to say "understood." This is just one of a million examples I have, they also seem to have no leniency for simulator issues, scenery issues, airport taxiway representations, etc. Oh, and they always vector you above the glide slope while instructing you to maintain 180 knots until like 5 DME. Like how am I supposed to descend that fast while losing that much speed to my vref?
I dont get this, is this a job? is this controlling real planes? or is this just something to do for fun, or is it something serious that actually carries weight that you can put on your resume or something?????
