I suspect most people that bought it brand new did it via a PCP scheme, so the depreciation doesn't really mean much to them

@@KAZ8264 could you explain more behind the reasoning of this? Surely if it was PCP it would have interest on top and most likely would have been upside down with the balloon payment? And I can't see how they could have been bought through a company to try offset any loses.
Highlights the richness of these people ordering them, same with Maserati's. It's just soooooo economic to buy the 1 or 2 year old models. Also Hypercards are so limited on options because of design that you can browse almost anythig with your taste 2nd hand

I had a 911 992 Carrera S before sold it because the ride was literally terrible in the uk…bought a McLaren 570gt ride is better than most regular cars & the 720s is supposed to be better 👍

Out of interest how much would a tidy E46 M3 Coupe, manual, full service history, 140k kms be? Id say in the UK it would be average 14-20 grand.
If that 720 is jittery I would get the accumulators checked
@@StromSports I had them changed at V engineering for the rechargeable ones on my 18 car and it’s a revelation.
Are the accumulators just a wear item?
If you've got the money to run it, i think it's a no-brainer. But i suspect the lack in number of those people is why they are so cheap to buy.
And then for those people, do they just take the running costs and buy something more expensive that costs less to run and comes with a warranty?
Remember though, it may be cheap to buy, but is still a 300k car to maintain properly. Get one with a warranty and enjoy. Stunning cars and performance is bonkers
I'm not sure if you're aware but a lot of mclaren service parts are common with BMWs and Mercedes. Only a few are specific to Mclaren.
I will never understand people who spec supercars in those dour, muted colours, especially when Mclaren offer things like volcano orange which looks awesome.
I get it, they don't want the attention, they are buying it for themselves. the Loud colors you are buying for the "look at me" statement, like 99% of those in LA or Miami, haha

Joking aside, wonderful review as always. It is somewhat frustrating that McLaren cars do seem to be a tale of two halves... (for anyone new to this channel, I'd suggest watching James' other videos on McLaren). Whenever I see a McLaren, they stand out to me as looking absolutely awesome. So much road presence. It is therefore a shame about the other side of the cars.
@robinthebobin6537 don't judge by tge negatives. I've had mine over 3 years and never had an issue. Maybe because I drive it regularly who knows. They really are a great car.

Yes but you can also get an F12 for similar money... How anyone would be able to say no to that V12 is beyond me
People have different views, some consider a supercar only a mid engine setup, plus performance-wise these cars belong to different universes, and you can’t have an f12 as a spider/cabrio, for some it’s important. And actually I don’t much like the looks of the rear of the f12. So I would pick a 720 spider in a bright colour over a f12 coupe easily.
If everyone must have exactly the same taste they would all drive a black 911.

Here in my home country of Indonesia, 720S sells like hotcakes. I think it was one of McLaren's best-selling car here alongside 570S. And a lot of them are specced in bright colours. 720S wears bright colours very well, especially the likes of Lantana Purple, Papaya Spark or Napier Green.
Weirdly I am not a fan of 750S, its painted front fascia just looks terrifying, as if it comes from a creepypasta 'I Don't Have Mouth But I Must Scream'. The wheel options are also ugly.
I am researching a 570s to buy late next year. So many of the ‘horror stories’ are from people who know people. Not actual owners. Are there issues, yes. Are there issues with all cars and manufacturers, yes.
It is simply understanding the possible issues and accepting them or not.
Many McLaren owners have had Lambos, Ferraris, Porsches and continue to own McLaren’s.
Before making up your mind, research the cars. You will be surprised how the internet has warped the view of reliability of McLaren.
As others have said, check Ferrari forums and maybe many eyes will be opened.
You completely missed the 675LT (outside of a brief mention) in between the 650S and the 720S which by all accounts was the real game changer for McLaren. That was their finest hour!

I have a Porsche 718 Spyder. The former owner traded it in on a McLaren 720S earlier this year. Just last week, he put up a video of the car being loaded on a truck heading back to the dealership for repairs.

I don’t think he’s ever said the driving experience of mclaren is anything but excellent. This can be separated from the perceived reliability issues.

If they had a bit of quality control, I would choose McLaren over it's competitors anyday..

If anyone is actually wondering should i buy one, be prepared to spend near on £6k for a new windscreen of which has a production fault where the glass is too thin and cracks on its own from stress of the car.

There’s absolutely no doubting it’s a fabulous car. BUT when you spend that sort of money on a car with frankly shocking build quality, it’s no wonder people buy a Porsche or even an R8. For a little bit more you are looking at a Cayman GT 4 RS and sorry for me it’s a no brainer. Cayman every day because I know walking up to a 720 on the drive and seeing those panel gaps and poor quality would depress me so much.

as with all modern mclarens, the rear looks great, but the front, only a mother could love
I drove one at one of those track days. Utterly wonderful experience. Not quite as exciting as the 2WD Huracan but that could have something to do with the terrifying speeds the instructor was making me go! Definitely want more time in the 720s though.

A car which has been on sale not evan 1/4 the time the Mclaren has.
Granted they havent lost too much starting to appear low 200 but still they arent selling many, or rather they are selling them and owners just arent staying in them

I suspect people who bought a 720S really wanted one when Ferrari customers who bought the 296 did it mostly to move up on their dealer list in order to get allocated "the best stuff"....

It’s a bargain what you get in performance for the 720s. . Keep in mind the latest Porsche Turbo S can’t touch this car from 4-6 yrs ago. Porsche prices are very close to McLaren now on top of overs so the Turbo S aren’t a bargain anymore.
Only thing missing is those 150.000euros - yeah i don't have that kind of money. :D

Great video on the bargain of the century. If I could I would. And now that Thorpey, Litchfield and Reperformance and providing knowledgeable independent support for these the McLaren daily is an expensive but manageable reality.

Ferrari have a history of sending much faster versions of cars to media. That 458 was probably closer to a Speciale with mis-labelled tyres and the lot

I Buy and Sell Fast Motorbikes. And it's much the same feeling, I can look ahead 4 or 5 cars in front, and then I'm just there, so eye-watering fast. Do you think Ferrari would have gone back to turbocharged v8 engines around 2013-15 if the 12C was naturally/normally aspirated or they would have waited a bit longer like what Lamborghini did? I would also include Porsche as well because they too put turbocharged engines in most of their 911 range.

Honestly I think they will. If you look at most cars over the past 20 years they can be had for circa £100K or even less. Whether it be an Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren etc.
Almost all McLarens bottom out around £80K.

wow you can buy a 720S for the same as a new M3 in the UK? In the US a M3 is $95K fully loaded and 720S is over $200K, any 2 seat mid engine ferrari 2017 or newer is over $300K

I appreciate your efforts to resucitate theri reputation but I'm afraid it's just a lost cause. For the $ 120,000 you can get a pretty proper AstonMartin if you just won't buy a ferarri, similar quality problems but still an Effing awesome ride.

There is a (justifiable) stigma attached to them, regarding quality however.

I'd take a McLaren over a Ferrari any day of the week! Literally ANY model McLaren will do! Ferraris and Lamborghinis are as much about posing as they as driving, that's Italians in general (all shouting, all bluster, lots of waving of arms but zero substance in reality) Being British I prefer being straight forward, we don't like bragards, understated is the way. Like British underworld figures, quiet understated but deadly. Italians are shouty, showy, only good with a gun in their hand and don't last long.The McLaren F1 is THE greatest car ever made and I see modern McLarens as the perfect offspring carrying on that tradition.
