  • According to Mike Shaw “Grief Happens,” but gratitude is your foundation for healing. It’s all about perspective. Your lows give you a greater ability to appreciate new highs. Trust that you will heal. You CAN live a FULL life after grief. Mike shows you how gratitude and grieving are closely linked. He goes as far as saying that grief reveals gifts, he’s grateful for its validation, and for the balance it brings to your life. Grief Happens - but YOU can turn the tables; healing is possible.
    In this TED talk, learn how freestyle skiing and spinal cord injury taught Mike Shaw about gifts, perspective, gratitude and grieving. A miracle he’s standing. Grief is a stinker. When you start to enjoy the grief or the attention from it you know you need to move on.

    This was really inspirational thank you. I lost my partner a almost a year ago now, I think you're right the gratitude is the only thing that can pull you out of a dark time. To hurt so much after losing something means that it has changed you forever and will always be a part of who you are. Thank you.

    One of the MOST POWERFUL things I've heard during my grief journey!!!!
    Comes at a mega turning point. My journey is way different (loss of son, cancer sucks), so minutes 8-13 were especially amazing
    Grief is validation. I will take back my life and practice gratitude daily.
    Thanks Mike!!

    Mike, you're living proof that life happens, grief happens, but with an attitude of gratitude, you can get up, dust off and keep moving forward.
    Your talk is a gift to countless others that will keep on giving.

    Awesome message Mike - we all experience grief from various experiences. Grief can keep you down and with the ability to see the light in any experience we can and will find gratitude. Great message and thank you.

    Thanks for your talk. I can relate in many ways after losing my health and ability to do what I love most. My passion was ski touring. I miss the mountains so much and am still grieving my old self. You are right , perspective and gratitude can help reshape a situation. I'm learning new ways how to cope every day and your talk helped. Thank you.

    Excellent talk, truly opened my mind about grieving and how long society deems "appropriate" to grieve before it becomes "a crutch to failure". Would be interested in hearing more about healthy grieving versus self-destructive grieving. I like the way you presented this topic.

    A talk for anyone who has ever lost. Gratitude is so powerful. I work in spinal cord injury research. I've seen catastrophic losses faced by so many and I've watched so many overcome their grief, hard as that can be. Mike provides a new perspective and hope where all seems lost. Thank you +Mike Shaw Great inspirational talk.

    I'm in the club and get it. I have also made a great, but incomplete, recover. Life is still good and it is all about attitude and refocusing on what else is important in your life besides your previous passion. In my case, it was giving up climbing at a high level.

    • @mikeshaw2815
      @mikeshaw2815 7 лет назад +1

      It's hard to give up your passion. The "refocusing" part is so important. Cherishing irreplaceable memories is important, but making new ones is the goal!

      I am so sorry to hear. Devastating. I am with you, sometimes it feels like you'll never pick yourself back up. However, hope and trust are powerful tools... And I know it is counter-intuitive to think about what you are thankful for when all you see around you is darkness, but gratitude will help. Grief never fully goes away if the loss is so significant; gratitude helps us cope. Nobody ever plans for trauma, it's not like I dreamt of one day being paralyzed as a kid, but sh*t happens. No one would ever dream of losing their family. You must carry on, you will find joy, you will live a full life after grief. Trust that. Live fully for your family. Sending you my most sincere gratitude - thank you for sharing your loss. I hope it's helped.

      Thanks, Kelly, sorry for the delay... It appears I haven't looked at this thread for too long. I ran into Steve on one of my visits back to GF Strong. He wasn't in a great place mentally or emotionally, but he was making every effort to take back his life. He had found accessible housing and was preparing to leave the rehab hospital. I kept encouraging him to accept and move on, working with his abilities to achieve a full life. Since then I haven't seen him... He told me he used to be a boxer... I told him he's still a boxer, he's still a fighter, this is just a different kind of fight. Hopefully he's continued moving forwards.
