This scene always depressed and even kinda frightened me a bit growing up but now that I am older I have a different perspective on it. Heywood wanted his fish to win at first but then eventually he realized it wasn’t worth it to have the guy die in front of his very eyes even he knew it wasn’t funny anymore. Then later on when Andy asks him what happened Heywood initially is a jerk to him but then later on when Andy requests the beers Heywood realizes Andy is a good man with a good heart and then we as the audience realize so is Heywood. He may be a jerk at times but he is just an institutionalized jerk underneath that Heywood is a man with a heart of gold. As much as this is my favorite movie and I love Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in it William Sadler’s performance in this is so underrated. Sure Heywood can be mean at times but that’s because the system has taught him to be that way. Away from all of that he is a good man with a heart of gold which is why I love the character. Later on Andy quotes Heywood about how his lawyer screwed him and he ended up at Shawshank and Heywood and others burst up laughing. Heywood was a good friend to Andy and a good person who just made a mistake.
