Ironically, since Andrew made this recording Ineos has released a video of the power train being tested. I was thinking the same thing. I hope it’s wider than the defender, and the engine and gearbox are solid units that will run for 100s of 1000kms without issues. These vehicles should last decades if built right.
In N America we might be getting a proper offroader from Ford in the new Bronco. But, that's a slim chance since Ford is also quite proud of their electronics.

Agreed. I have carefully watched the new Defender release and setting aside the 1st year teething issues, I am not seeing problems in reliability or performance to characterize it as technically less than the old/ancient Defender.
Best 4 wheel channel on the internet bar none, and Andrew is EASILY the best, most balanced and knowledgable reviewer. He strikes me as a bloke of the utmost integrity and honesty..Very rare qualities. i salute you sir.
I’m an old Defender “Tragic” like you Andrew. However I took the plunge in December last year and ordered a new LR Defender 1st Edition which is now due in a couple of months time (delayed due to COVID). If Ineos does give you a Grenadier for an Australian endurance touring test at full payload, I’d be interested to bring the new Defender along for a real-world head to head comparison...! I’m hoping such a face-off won’t be the lay-down misère you seem confident it will be but who knows? Would be interesting to have a new Wrangler Gladiator as well.
4xAdventures, Only time will tell if it needs a new name . Looks excellent but I do suspect there will be many teething problems to get it to the standard being claimed.

Hi Andrew! I watched this 11 months ago, and it was my introduction to the Grenadier. Thank you! I'm following their build and test progress, and notice a new call for testing to be done globally. @Dugie Doogs im not sure that was the problem. they added too much junk that you dont want for a utilitarian car. cameras everywhere, auto transmission, over 80 computers controlling it all, you want 1 to control the engine for emissions, and thats IT.
@@petelattimer6808 I spoke to one of the engineers who worked on the new defender project. It's literally the front end of a Range Rover and back end of the Discovery sport welded together, with an extra bit in the middle for the long wheelbase version.

So yeah looks awesome...not sure about BMW Engines...but time will tell. I wouldn't mind the 3.2 did pajero engine..or that awesome 2.9 merc diesel...or 2.8 Cummins..
As the owner of the last Snatch Defender released by thr M.O.D.I think the Grenadier looks brilliant. The new Defender I also like as it looks like a more modern version of the Skoda Yeti
From a geographical point of view, it's not highly unlikely that it could have been named "The Nags Head", or "The Alfred Tenysson" or "The Star Tavern Belgravia"... Don't you feel lucky now?
I remember seeing them in the development stage. I love the Idea they have cherry picked the best ideas from all the best 4x4's please keep producing more on this 4x4. I like the interior as it reminds me of the aircraft I used to work on.
I think they hammer on the "form following function" and "engineering led"concepts to avoid being sued for copying the Defender. Or, it means the old Defender was the best designed vehicle as this is the best the engineers can come up with now. They are not using newly designed parts. The majority of components are coming off the shelf from established manufactures, and this is good because parts will be available over the counter anywhere. BMW build good engines and again, available nearly everywhere. The only issue is the price. If it can be in the region of or less than a 70 series Land Cruiser, they will have a winner.
Target starting price is £35k, The roots of Land Rover was form following function as with many of the famous utility 4wds so their shape will naturally be similar
"BMW build good engines and again, available nearly everywhere." wash your mouth, ask any BWM specialist about how much work they have because of their engines....a lot, that that isn't good. It's not that there are brand new highly complex BMW engines scattered around isolated areas on the globe.... you all are kidding yourselves
I think they got sued, or threatened and won (LR lost).... (read something, somewhere.) If JLR decide to stop making a genre of vehicles, they can't morally (legally - they have to win that argument) claim infringement on "approximate styling".
Thanks Andrew, I own a Discovery 3 and as I live in the uk is easy to get parts at reasonable prices. As you know the D3/D4 is ok as a middle of the road vehicle “good” on road and “good” off road which is fine here at home but I’m sure it would never do the Canning stock route or any of your long distance trips. I love the look of the Grenadier and like you it’s obviously designed to look like one vehicle in particular. I think Ineos tried to buy the rights to continue production of the Defender but LR said no. I think that as it using BMW engines they have also struck a deal to sell them through existing BMW dealerships. It would be nice to think that the axles and suspension are existing parts to keep costs down and reliability up and allow modifications from already known suppliers. I would imagine that the interior would reflect BMW as well to tie in with the engines. The most challenging thing will be costs I think here in the UK a base stripped down model will cost at least £40,000. And put it on par with the new Defender and as we don’t get the Land cruisers that you get it won’t have any competition (Jeep wrangler maybe). If however the car can be modified through the dealer with third party stuff (bumpers, lockers, roof racks etc.) then it will make it work better. Hopefully they can reach out to utility companies, Police, military etc to get bulk sale at lower prices to help get production numbers up. I would love to see what you could do with one, maybe you could set up the first Australian Dealerships with some of your contacts. And Ineos should send you one to test for them any company should be glad for the feedback good or bad
Excellent!! Halfway into watching the clip I was praying the INEOS team see your clip and reach out to you. Glad you offered to carry out an elongated test for/with them at the end. I hope they take up your offer. Your feedback will them and us a whole lot of good.
This guy is the most valuable bit of R&D a car manufacturer could do. If I was Land Rover I’d hire this guy to get back in track to their roots. Surely Land Rover can build modern but durable vehicles that only only priced for the people who wouldn’t actually use them for their purpose.
It's great to see one of my brothers from South Africa talk about off roading with such obvious passion, in runs in every vein of his body, he can't possibly help himself....and I to hope the Grenadier can be a world wide success and a version be adapted for light military applications...to cement its world class reputation. Off roading in Australia is a whole different ball game....
And folks like me are fine with the Defender taking over the LR 5 role. Let's be honest, the current Disco 5 is as attractive is Boris Johnson's hair in the middle of a hurricane.
I would never buy a brand new car and have always maintained that it’s not a sensible financial decision, but I can honestly say the INEOS is for me the exception to the rule. I really would buy one of these with the plan of it being the only car I will ever need. If it’s as good as it looks like it will be, then I will do so.
You obviously should say that you would NORMALLY never buy a brand new car....Many new cars sold in the last twenty years were resold for WAY above original MSRP, and many with miles on them....It depends on what you're buying, so I'm always careful with blanket statements.
As an owner of an older landrover 110 defender, it is exciting to see a newer more improved version being available. Hopefully the guys take you up on your offer Andrew. If you give it your tick of approval I would certainly consider purchasing one.
What most of us fear with the new products is all of the electronics! I was basically going to keep my 2005 130 Defender until I couldn’t get it maintained anymore! I’m very very very interested in this vehicle. As for the price, we all have “Invested” about the same amount again as our purchase prices in upgrades & fit outs!
As a serial BMW owner I have alot of reservations with the powerplant choice. Granted it will be detuned for reliability but I don't have as much faith in them as I would a Toyota unit.
ive had 3 new landrovers in the past 10 years and i have to say everyone has broken down at some point .the issue have is getting landrover to fix them with out costing you a arm and leg
Great video. I do have a comment, though. Every vehicle can break. Breaking on a long overland isn't necessarily a deal-breaker. The questions that need to be answered will be, when it does break, are parts available and can things be fixed on the trail, etc?
Andrew: "I want to get my hand on it". Me: "So do I". In the end, Andrew's got hold of it and disappeared in the Australian desert. That's how endless, ambitious and hopeful people always win. They love what they do. They do it for a living. And hey, Andrew, if Ineos go ahead and listen to you, I'm pretty sure it'll be one of the best overland videos anyone on this planet could probably dream of. No question, you're the best and the right guy, if not the only one, who can do it objectively, accurately and with passion. That's why I like your videos!

Fully agree whit you Andrew, i speak about Discover'ish new Defender long time. And i was excited seeing this new Grenadier on first press relase shots.
As I got, they are going for a BMW in-line 6 diesel with slight decrease of power for stressless running. Those diesels are quite reliable. Looks like a good choice.
I must have had my head in the sand because I'd never heard of it before today. Was surprised by the BMW engine, I was certain they were going to say something like ISUZU however getting into bed with BMW isn't such a bad idea for a 100% new company as it instantly gives you global showrooms, distribution, marketing, servicing and a parts network. Maybe it'll be like the Mini and although we all know it's BMW it's in it's own building. Can't help wondering which engine they'll be using though, can't think of any with the characteristics I'd have wanted in this new beast. Really hope it's a huge success though.
Andy Sparks Isuzu or Toyota would have given them more credibility in an off road engine and also given them the same global network for sales, parts and service. V8 Land Cruiser engine.. 🤪👍🇦🇺
@@bigPianist99 can't see 340HP being on the cards, more likely be de-tuned for reliability. nothing to stop people tuning them up though (once their warranty has expired, of course 😂)

Mike Zog that’s a better idea than mine but I there is rumours they are going to discontinue the v8. Also it would be easier to do a deal with Isuzu because the new bt50 is Isuzu and because of the mentioned Aus defenders deal. In other words Toyota might not want to part with any motors for the project.

I prefer Ineos Grenadier. The simple reason is it gives the feeling of driving a off road vehicle. The new Land Rover doesn't give the feeling of driving a off road vehicle. It looks and feels like driving a big box. Ineos Grenadier looks and feels like driving a robust vehicle.
@4xoverland they have already said in a video that there will be more shoulder room than in a defender. Just as a military and police vehicles I believe they will sell many vehicles. The final price will dictate if it is only a real 4x4 for rich people.
I hope INEOS gives you the shot you are hoping for. I also wish INEOS as much success as possible so I could maybe see one of these in the states some day.
It is a very interesting vehicle. This is how Land Rover must make the new defender. The Grenadier you can use as a real overlander the new defender not with Al the electronic what the defender has.
The really big market is the military and mining/drilling companies. if it can carry a 500kg half pallet in the back, 4 people in a climate controlled space, be rugged in -30 to +40°C and have room in the side panels for kevlar panels and shootprof glass it's a winner. It's amazing how many army's that is relying on old off-roaders for personel transport in the field.

I hope it’s wider than the defender, and the engine and gearbox are solid units that will run for 100s of 1000kms without issues. These vehicles should last decades if built right.
Ineos have stated that 25,000 units will be the production goal. With the faults of the old Defender fixed, I think sales could be higher than that.

I'm a fan of the new Defender. I get that the Monocoque, suspension and tech limits modifications, but it's the future, and you can't fight the wheels of progress.
@4xOverland, I am looking forward to your review of a new Defender
Agreed. I have carefully watched the new Defender release and setting aside the 1st year teething issues, I am not seeing problems in reliability or performance to characterize it as technically less than the old/ancient Defender.

Don't INEOS sponsor Mercedes in F1? Recipriocity?
A defender replacement that is meant to be a serious 4x4, with a BMW engine! What could go wrong
I'm thinking maybe 200 series price, but if they can make it only 5-10k more than the 76 it would be a hit
@357MagnumPlinkster Society yea hopefully pickup and chassis cab will be around that if the station wagon is £35k
I think they got sued, or threatened and won (LR lost).... (read something, somewhere.)
If JLR decide to stop making a genre of vehicles, they can't morally (legally - they have to win that argument) claim infringement on "approximate styling".

I would never buy a brand new car and have always maintained that it’s not a sensible financial decision, but I can honestly say the INEOS is for me the exception to the rule. I really would buy one of these with the plan of it being the only car I will ever need. If it’s as good as it looks like it will be, then I will do so.
I feel the same way chap. It the exception to the rule.
Absolutely. Electronics are for laptops unless they are less integrated, modular and extremely rugged and resistant to all the elements.
As a serial BMW owner I have alot of reservations with the powerplant choice. Granted it will be detuned for reliability but I don't have as much faith in them as I would a Toyota unit.

Great video. I do have a comment, though. Every vehicle can break. Breaking on a long overland isn't necessarily a deal-breaker. The questions that need to be answered will be, when it does break, are parts available and can things be fixed on the trail, etc?

I prefer Ineos Grenadier. The simple reason is it gives the feeling of driving a off road vehicle. The new Land Rover doesn't give the feeling of driving a off road vehicle. It looks and feels like driving a big box. Ineos Grenadier looks and feels like driving a robust vehicle.

@4xoverland they have already said in a video that there will be more shoulder room than in a defender.

Only yesterday I was talking to the other half about finding a replacement for my mk4 Shogun 300,000 miles towing maximum weight most days.
She hated the old defender, noisey and uncomfortable but did the job. The shogun does equally well for the terrain we encounter and luxury in comparison but with the importation to the UK ending we were lost for a successor as I do not want a pickup, this morning I open my phone and my prayers may have been answered, Grenadier from Ineos
Testing its towing ability and tight space manuvering all round visbility and comfort will be a challenge after the Shogun.

I do not understand the BMW hate. Toyota put BMW motors in the fifth generation Supra, both the BMW B48B20 and BMW B58B30. Is the new Supra now an unreliable auto because it it technically a BMW motor installed at factory by Toyota? I would have thought if Toyota approved of these motors, they must meet Toyotas standard for reliability.

The only deal breaker for most fans on the Grenadier will be the cost to buy it.....its gonna be expensive
And apparently no manual gearbox....
Did you say only available in automatic? First bit of bad news I've heard about it. Hope I'm mistaken.
This cures all the issues that should have been taken care of with the defender.
I hope this is a success and I will be looking at one asap to buy
Being sun of former forestery engineer I remember my father punishing the woods in Iran with that defender vehicle. It crowled up the mountains up to 4000m and drove down in the stone desert in the south. Images of impressions flash trough my mind and I know what you are talking about. Although you are kinda person that is not loved by general car marketing people because of your honesty. You really deserve to get your chance of for filling your dream and test one. Happy marketing is not going to be any good in the middle of the desert. You need a car you are sure it will take you trough the next day. I really hope all the best for you but don't put a head of a dead Giraf in the back. 😁😂
