      Funny how things come full circle. The scramble for max area under the curve led to [0.006 - 0.050] ramps of 16.5 degrees and occasionally shorter - more lift for the same duration looked like the holy grail coming out of the '80s. But... we almost forgot who the oil companies formulate for: new builds. Its never been much different. When one manufacturer puts 2M engines on the road every year, you bet the petro-chemists accept specs from their engineers and start tweaking additives so they have something to sell them.
      Looking at the heyday of flat tappet valvetrains [SD thru SF oils], oems had gentle ramps: 30 degrees, often more. It worked: no break-in cold sweat rituals as bizarre as hopping about on one foot flinging spoonfuls of hot sauce at a picture of chairman Mao, chanting "yo-yo man stay in the trees". Detroit probably took most fresh builds, ran them a few minutes to dial in the carb & timing, and if it passed it received QC blessing and loaded out after dropping a fresh charge of oil in. Lake Speed jr was nowhere in sight, oddly.
      Camshafts all face a serious fight to survive: oil has to work very well, and there are limits. I examined an old set of hyd/flat tappets from 4k mile engine not long ago suspected of being over sprung. What I noted was a mild donut shaped burnish that evidenced the lobe pressure points. They began about 0.050" from the edge [so far so good], and were anywhere from 0.020" to 0.080" wide. That seemed too large a variance, and decided mismatch was likely - new cam/lifters/springs went in, as head swap was in the works anyway. Then I sat down and crunched numbers on what I had found [existing springs were tested], and I used the 0.080" number - I assumed square [not having pressure tape to prove both axis footprint over the nose at max lift]. So... 320# going back through 1.5 rockers is 480# of lifter working against the lobe. Divide by 0.0064 square inches and thats 75,000 psi. Oil has to be stronger than that, so add a 20% safety margin, and a lose no sleep number is 90,000psi failure point or better on the oil. Cam guys have their hands full, and Godbold looks to be aiming in a good direction for street enthusiasts.

    I still love my 265 with 114 LSA, its so driveable and still makes excellent power in my built 5.3...but this is great news though for the big cam guys, who struggle with wear and spring issues, another great breakthrough, which is why I have been a comp cam customer for decades.

    I got 15 camaro 1le. I put stage 2 cam in mine. This cam is so far so good and sound great also.

    Damn, Billy, I wish I could work for you. I have a bizarre fascination with cams and valvetrain, it's the engine topic that interests me most. But I'm 55 and not an engineer, just a gearhead.

    I love your short-travel hydraulic roller lifters, but do you have them for old school Mopars yet? I'd love to see them for LA and B engines, and Magnums too.

      took 60 hrs and the XD lifter forks spread like a hooker on dollar night. Took out my engine. Good luck

      Maybe so, but they don't spend the kind of money on advertising, sponsorship, marketing, and contingencies that Comp does. And simply due to technical advances, Comp undoubtedly does it better now than anyone did 15 years ago. Even if they didn't invent the concept, they're improving on it.

    you keep talking about no or little airflow at tdc, what about cams with lots of overlap that scavenge? how is this going to affect a tight lsa?

      yeah, like the big Honda VTEC high cam lobes. :-) Got me curious about Comp's Honda B series race cams...

    Speaking of which, can you please offer new cams for the 1.6 & 1.9 CVHs in the EXP & Escort? Love your grinds but the few roller cams that exist today don't qualify for your performance regrinds :/
    I'd seriously buy your cams by the literal dozen if you can make CVH cams from scratch and not just regrinds, thanks! Keep being the best!

    can you make this lobe for my gen 1 small block chevy stroker, daily driver, cross country, endurance, road race, that doesn't refuel during race. 60 gallon fuel tank. there is a long rod 362 c.i. and a long rod 373 c.i. slightly higher compression on pump gas 10.75:01 aluminum heads.

    What is the suffix on the grind numbers for low shock cams. I had a custom cam made with this principal and no way of knowing if it's low shock

      Look at the Honda B16A VTEC's High Cam Lobe from 1988. It's asymmetrical, opens hard and fast, and lets down easy...

    nice,ill have to dl a new master catalog..how does this lobe compare to huc's or ehx?..i usual do my cams on hucs,newest one i did ehx being it was l92 heads an wanting to turn it to 7800.
