Very kind of you to say, Dane. In fact, since "retiring" I've had a flurry of comments and subscribes to the channel. I should have retired long ago ;)
I don't know if you have looked the story up more since you made this video. In the book, the soldiers of the Empire don't wear French Foreign Legion outfits they wear lacquer armor suggesting they are Chinese or Japanese. Commentators have argued that the geography most resembles Xinjiang near Lop Nur lake, one of the few regions Europeans didn't directly colonize in the colonial era. On the other hand, other features of the story such as Joll's name do suggest the Empire is European. Ultimately that will always probably remain a mystery Coetzee isn't one for sharing his secrets.
I always thought Beau Geste with Telly Savalas from 1966 was a hell of a film.
Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it when it's shown on one of the main streaming channels, for free.
Found you through your Sharpe videos and enjoyed a lot of your other vids wish you luck in your future endeavors.
