I thought this movie was wonderful, I don't understand all the hate. It's not a war movie, it's not an action flick, and it isn't some grand ending sci-fi reveal. This is a period piece written from the perspective of exploring the mentality and behaviors of differing cultures. Was it something that left me in shock and I have to tell everyone about this? No. But it was a very well written movie
_I wish people could sit through slower movies more easily_ ikr. All of this Marvel shit is annoying and stupid. I didn't like the movie in the sense I just didn't understand what the author was trying to say, so I didn't dislike, it's just "whaaaaaat?"
Stuff does happen in the movie, it is just not shown, it's left to the imagination as modern audiences are all too familiar with that subject matter. The movie is more about communicating a message rather than illustrating the gore that's going on. Remember in the movie Rylance's comment that the Empire's soldiers led by Joll are 'depraving' these people? The movie gives a foundation for the ending, the right audience could almost predict this ending. The Empire taking Rylance's house and such is not the meat of the story, that's why people find it boring, they are looking for the gore and excitement so they miss the point. The story is not about Rylance, he is a central character, but it's really about those people. Great acting by the cast.
I thought this film was outstanding - a really beautifully poised film, some wonderful acting, and great cinematography, and anyone who says “nothing happens” completely misses the point. I disagree that anything should be edited out of it - its perfectly paced to the story it tells. Changing its pacing to allow for the Twitter age would ruin it. It’s a timeless tale - an allegory for the way “Empire” misleads itself into finding or making its own enemies and the insane convolutions of reason to find its enemies - it could be Rome, or S Africa and the machinations of BOSS, or the Soviet Union (or Putin’s Russia) - or as some reviewers say, the US in Afghanistan or Iraq. I’m off to give the book a try….. I give it 8.5/10 recognising its not for everyone.
I didn't found this movie is too slow. This have own pace, remember this is periphery a frontier of an empire with almost rural life. Without it couldn't be explained with right way. I watched movie from beginning to end without feeling bored. But always I kept in mind a novel. In a case of adaptation of a novel it's good example. What I like in this story, Kutzee gave deeper understanding of phenomenons.. Both nomads and empire
My interpretation is that the reason why she was unhappy is that she fall in love with him, but couldnt be with him, because he was „the enemy“ and his people killed her father. So, she despises these people but the magistrate treated her good and lovely and at the end she fall in love. I am not sure if thats what its supposed to mean, but thats what i am thinking.
I haven't seen the film, but going by the book which it appears was faithfully adhered to in this scene, it's a lot easier to see why she is unhappy with context. In the book, she is clearly underage, maltreated, vulnerable. He takes advantage of her sexually - though not penetratively. In one interpretation, the Magistrate represents one side of 'empire', 'civil' (legal) but perverted, blind to its own failures and oppressive structures - Colonel Joll, the other - brute force and unremitting violence. The Magistrate is sympathetic, but malevolently so.
I quite enjoyed the subtlety. There is a lot of suffering, which doesn't have to be - we'd probably even prefer it not to be - shown on screen. The story seems awfully realistic from what little I know of these kinds of historical situations. The Jesus parallels were very much on the nose - as in washing the commoner's feet - but it all had a purpose. I'd say it's one of the best movies I've ever watched, enjoyed both Dudley and Diggory, and it gave me plenty to think about.
I appreciated it as a person who studies history. I think it was done in the great way that historical films - epochs - used to be done in the 80s/90s/2000s. I just can’t tell who is whom here & where. It could be Anatolia ? The “Stans” ? Where are the guys from the “Empire” from ? Austrian empire ? Turks ? Russians ? Someone pls tell me if you have any ideas.
I Agree. Watched it with my Dad who is also into history. Couldn't tell where this was taking place or who they were. Uniforms made us think French and their flag looked Russian or Jorgian. The other people there were a mix of middle eastern looking and east asian Mongolian looking. Super weird. We basically ended up thinking it's some alternate earth like game of thrones but in the colonial period.
I'm a little late for this comment but I'm commenting anyway, I think that It was the director's and the author's choice to let the details of who is the empire and exactly where it is located because the point was the message that could fit in many places, times and nations. My guess would be the British and the place somewhere around Tibet or Nepal
To me, as a person with a degree in history and as an aspiring writer, it was fictional. It was a fictional empire, at a fictional frontier. The uniforms were inspired by different European armies of the late 1800s/early 1900s, but again fictional. I loved that. There was a tiny bit of worldbuilding, and more wasn't necessary. The audience gets to know enough as is necessary to understand the story and is then expected to fill in the blanks themselves if wished. I like that.
Despite being a former film school dropout, most movie plots confuse me. This one didn't. Was I bored? Yes. Did I fast forward a bit? Yes. Did I miss anything in fast forwarding a bit? No. Am I glad I watched it? Perhaps.
I like this movie. I honestly find it refreshing to watch a book adaptation where the director didn't feel the need to cram in a bunch of explicit action scenes like it's a Marvel or DC Comics movie.
I enjoyed watching it but I did not enjoy the fact that I had watched it once it ended. It was very "all stick and no carrot". Not the worlds biggest fan of Open Ended stories. Though I did love the speechless coversation between the Magistrate and Joll when they were reunited after Joll's second incursion into the desert "you done messed up A-a-ron" was communicated perfectly through the eyes
Interesting this guy tries to do everything good but is not acceptable in the political unrest crisis. Sounds what we’re going through in this world today.
This movie and story reminded me of the exact reaction of Persians to the Mongolians before their invasion. The Persian Frontier did the same thing (at least in the movie we have got a good-hearted person there). Then Chankiz Conquered Persia.
What are we waiting for, assembled in the forum? The barbarians are due here today. Why isn’t anything going on in the senate? Why are the senators sitting there without legislating? Because the barbarians are coming today. What’s the point of senators making laws now? Once the barbarians are here, they’ll do the legislating. Why did our emperor get up so early, and why is he sitting enthroned at the city’s main gate, in state, wearing the crown? Because the barbarians are coming today and the emperor’s waiting to receive their leader. He’s even got a scroll to give him, loaded with titles, with imposing names. Why have our two consuls and praetors come out today wearing their embroidered, their scarlet togas? Why have they put on bracelets with so many amethysts, rings sparkling with magnificent emeralds? Why are they carrying elegant canes beautifully worked in silver and gold? Because the barbarians are coming today and things like that dazzle the barbarians. Why don’t our distinguished orators turn up as usual to make their speeches, say what they have to say? Because the barbarians are coming today and they’re bored by rhetoric and public speaking. Why this sudden bewilderment, this confusion? (How serious people’s faces have become.) Why are the streets and squares emptying so rapidly, everyone going home lost in thought? Because night has fallen and the barbarians haven't come. And some of our men just in from the border say there are no barbarians any longer. Now what’s going to happen to us without barbarians? Those people were a kind of solution.
Great review from Amazon Prime... THIS MOVIE WASN'T MEANT FOR YOU. It's not pleasurable. It's not entertaining. It's not cathartic. The storyline is shorter than an elevator pitch. There is no excitement. No romance. No journey. No resolution. It's painterly. You could watch it muted and stare at the ocean of pixels without moving for the entire running time. It's sound painted. You could listen only between dialogue and be saturated. The spoken restraint is so pervasive that the single loud, angry shout shocks. The magistrate is not the protagonist. The colonel is not the antagonist. The barbarian woman is not the victim. The frontier is as fully drafted character as any of them. No backstory, no part 2, no merchandise tie-in, no compromises. (Of course there were, but not perceptible to the viewer.) This is an awful movie in the sense of filling with awe. I'm going to go throw up now and watch it again. (by Richard Careaga)
Just finished this movie. Not only did I waste money renting it at home, I wasted my time watching it. 2 hours of life down the drain. There’s no satisfying ending, so many moments beg for elaboration that never comes. 2020 just keeps letting me down, but I should of known it was destined for disappointment - it’s a Depp film.
I liked it. The tempo worked perfectly, and I didn't beg for elaboration. A lot was implied, and I could fill things in. It felt more like how with many books you get to fill in the gaps, rather than be force-fed a narrative. But damn, the trailer as shown in this videoreally makes it seem like there's a lot more action. I just watched the film without having seen anything about it. I read the premise and it sounded interesting.
This movie was horrible! It is quite an accomplishment given that the acting and cinematography was good. The plot was meandering and at the same time predictable. Parts of the movie was overdone. It is a case of people creating an enemy that they are “searching” for. You will quickly realize that the new soldiers need only look in the mirror when searching for the barbarians.
Just finished watching it
Aight
I finished watching it too. I honestly like it.

I was sucked into the movie from the start. I wish people could sit through slower movies more easily

Beautiful film. Rylance needs to be nominated for this.
8/10
Slow rhythm, but strong performances and beautiful cinematography make this a must see.

This movie was pretty good, Tbh
I really enjoyed everyone's performances, they all played their parts well.
I just watched the movie....of course nothing happened...they were waiting for the barbarians.
The fact the "good guys" were more barbaric than the indiginous people didn't stick out to you?

Can someone explained why the servant told the magistrate that he made the girl unhappy, and he was perplexed ad to how and why?
I had the same question.

It’s based on a book by the same name. It is set in a fictional world, drawing parallels to many areas of the world during the age of imperialism.

The Oscar Movie That Won't be Nominated for Anything? Why this the title of the video , i dont understand
Man your lucky the nearest Regal near me doesn’t open for another 2 weeks
😪
I'm glad I watched it. Probably would have been disappointed if i spent $15 on it at a theatre though. Its not a block buster.
hmm are you telling me that blockbuster films are always good??
Saw it right now. I really enjoyed it but I understand why people wouldn't like it. No action just slow story telling and dramatic acting.
you're describing Bladerunner 2049 and thankfully I loved it.

i did not know what it was going in to it but i really liked it
I agree. A definite almost.
American’s? He says, “by a director a name I can’t pronounce”. Why is they don’t even try?
Because then you'd be mad at my pronunciation 😔 there's no win.

why the troops ran away? and took some food nd women
@John Dough i see but why they loot food and women from the peoppe they were suppose to protect?
It's a real thing that has been done many years ago. Us humans are barbaric

Just the fact the u said "nazi" just shows how fucking stupid u r
Nazi theme? It seemed more like colonial occupation. The uniforms were of fictional late 1800s cops. Nothing about this film made me think of nazis.
