This happens because driving in ice creates a wave under the ice and if you’re going fast the wave eventually overtakes you if you slow down the ice cracks and down you go. Also because they scripted it and there was always a hole with water under the snow
This has to be one of the best bits of ingenuity from the team I've ever seen. When something serious goes wrong they always come together to help solve it

Ever saw ice road truckers?. Imagine going through the ice with a truck.and trailer. Ever saw once it was not allowed to wear ur seatbelt while driving on a frozen lake. Because, if it did happen, that the truck fell through ... they could jump out the truck, and not be strained, or blocked from the seatbelt that could take a few seconds to save urself before the truck is sinking, no?

Definitely not a set up if you look at James' immediate reaction. The whole rescue process was a bit protracted and scripted but he definitely broke the ice and beached it for real.
The moment he went through you can hear how properly serious Jeremy and Richard took it. When they established James was going to be okay then they went back to joking about.
There will never be a trio like the boys who worked together for so many years and entertained us. These shows both TG(before the trios exit) and GT will forever remain the greatest car show EVER.

Its funny how Richard fell in love with Oliver which was a yellow color car and james clearly developed a connection with the Evo which is also yellow. 😅 IMO that's what makes cars special. The moments you experience with the car regardless of whether it works or breaks down. Clarksons quote at the end was poetic about the Audi. A Quattro isn't just for Christmas. A Quattro is for life! So happy to see these 3 back at it again doing what they do best. Thank you all for a life time of memories. Its sad to see them burn by the fire of time but i guess we all have to age one day. Not 1 adventure where they haven't ever made it entertaining to watch.
That is why us here in Canada 🇨🇦. When going out ice fishing, in any vehicle. Roll your windows down, seat belts uncliped. Just incase you need to make an emergency exit. Comman sentence for most people.
Protocol dictates that in a situation like this the two remaining lads abandon him and continue with the challenge. The fact they all worked together to not only save their friend but the car also is astonishing. These guys are getting soft.

If there's one thing I love about these guys, it's their unique resourcefulness. Especially at their ages. Ass kicking grandpas, all of them.
Hammond's camping experience really shines through in moments like these. The improvisation is impeccable!
