Constantine II, the former King of Greece died on the 10th of January, 2023 at the age of 82. He was the 6th and last king of the Hellens in the modern era. At 20 he won an Olympic gold medal in sailing. When he inherited the throne at 23 and wed beautiful Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark, hopes were high. But in just 3 years he was ousted by a military coup. He attempted a bungled counter-coup but was forced to flee with his wife and young children. He spent the next 56 years socializing with the crowned heads of Europe, most of whom were his close relatives, and fighting with the Greek government over his lost property. Let’s meet the ex king of Greece, Constantine II. But first, a quick jaunt through Greek history.

The Father-in-law of Europe was the six part documentary about the descendants of Christian IX. Constantine comes across as very charming. It's up on RUclips, but there are audio issues with the first two episodes. The sound only cuts out for a few seconds here and there, but it's a little annoying. I really enjoyed it. Lots of family stories!

A few small corrections from a Greek:
    1) His disagreement with the government wasn't over his property but over the crown's property. The thing is, there is no crown in Greece, there hasn't been one in more than half a century. All its properties were requisitioned by the government.
    2) He was, indeed, a gold medal winner at the 1960 olympics, however the other two members of the team, Odysseas Eskitzoglou and George Zaimis, as well as their instructor Paul Elvstrøm, are almost never mentioned, even though they were just as important to the win.
    3) Constantine wasn't against a coup so long as it was supportive of the monarchy's interests. The only reason for the hal hearted counter coup was that the colonels didn't cater to his demands. Not to mention the fact that he single handedly created the instability that led to the coup by meddling with politics as well as his efforts to restore the monarchy post 1974 by making contact with a few of dictator Ioannides' allies.
    4) The reason he was not allowed to return to Greece was that he refused to adopt a surname which is a necessity for any and all Greek citizens and thus had no passport. Conveniently enough when he asked his Danish relatives for a passport he "magically" found a surname to have on it.

    great video !
as a greek, here are some notes:
    1. the ionian islands were actually given back because the population had suffered too many attrocities at the hands of the british and it had started to become kind of difficult to continue the occupation
    2. Hellenes does not mean Greece , it means Greeks. Hellas - Ελλάς- means Greece. The reason greeks like to refraine from calling ourselves Greeks in the english language and prefer Hellenes - 'Ελληνες - instead, is because Greeks comes from the derogatory word γραικός , which was used against us by the Ottomans.
    3. you pronounced Thessaloniki - Θεσσαλονίκη - pretty well
    4. fascist Italy had almost no gains in Greece during ww2, but the germans did win and handed over some parts.

Ottomans called Greeks Rum or Yunan, if they wanted to insult them then I think they called them gavur which means infidels. I think you're confusing it with Latin 'Graeculus' which means "little Greek" and was used by the Romans as a pejorative term for Greeks.
Greeks didn't find the term "Graikos" pejorative and it was used instead of Hellene during Byzantine and Ottomans times because Hellenes were branded as pagans.

King Juan Carlos used brother-in-law King Constantine as a Template of what NOT to do during his own Spanish 1981 Coup

    • @Edmonton-of2ec
      @Edmonton-of2ec Год назад +11

To be fair, that coup attempt was horribly organized. The Greek coup was well planned, well thought out and almost perfectly executed. Juan Carlos also had a lot more political experience, and had stacked the military with more liberal officers, headed by the experienced Minister of Defence, Manuel Gutiérrez Mellado.
Constantine, by contrast, was young, politically inexperienced, and had far less direct control over the military then Juan Carlos did, not helped the fact that between Constantine’s accession to the throne and the coup, there’d been a political crisis known as the Apostasia and 6 different Prime Ministers.

When he asked to be allowed to marry Princess Annemarie, King Frederik (Annemarie's father) was so surprised that he didn't know what to answer. Therefore he locked Contantine in a room. During this period Constantinos constantly intervened into the politics of the country, mingled with the wide majority elected government and appointed non elected governments further destabilizing Greece. All those events, among others, resulted to the military Junta coup, marking a dark period for the Greek nation which suffered great loses (civilian suppression, tortures and deaths, marginalization of Greece in European politics and ultimately the invasion of Cyprus). Even following the military Junta coup, he failed to stand as a democracy rallying point and ultimately protect the constitution and his people. Instead he made the crown seem it gets along with the new regime and it showed its low reflexes only 7 months later making it into looking as a conflict of interest rather than a serious effort to restore democracy. Those further deteriorated his and the crown's public image. I do not want to be unfair towards Constantinos, as he has already stated he made a lot of faults during his reign and has recognized them. The fact that he returned in Greece 10 years ago as a civilian, abstaining from politics is very pleasant. As of now it has been almost 50 years since Greece is a republic and the institution of monarchy is well behind us. Also the end of monarch it is not entirely to blame Constantinos as a person. He as a king during his reign acted as expected, most probably as his father would had or most of his predecessors. Monarchy in Greece was always a controversy especially in the 20th century, coming with schisms (between republicans and monarchists in the period before WW1), dubious and controversial royal decisions acting against the interest of the Greek state (Greek neutrality in WWI, the Asia Minor war campaign following the end of WW1, resulting in the eclipse of the Greek populations in Asia Minor) and of course the extreme involvement into the politics (especially during the period following WWII with the civil war and the cold war). All those resulted in a mistrust towards the monarchy institution. To sum up Constantinos as an individual maybe was a lovely personality but the burden he had on his shoulders was heavy and he showed little willingness/ability to maneuver with it as a political personality. History will judge him as a king/public figure as well as the history of monarchy in Greece. May he rest in peace.

I agree with many things you wrote but surely not with all. You can't blame the Minor Asia 'catastrophe' solely on Konstantinos I for example. It's oversimplistic. And even if that was the case this doesn't mean he had bad intentions. Both Konstantinos I and II surely made mistakes but were as much at fault as almost every major Greek politician of their respective age. But no politician paid the price ir even lost his citizenship as Konstantinos did. Never forget, history is written by the winners. The Greek royal family were utterly the losers.

@@user-hl4vl8qd7h The constitutions during the Greek revolution were written and approved by a small in number educated elite with many liberal elements, in order to touch the hearts and souls and gain the support of the western European liberal movements of the period. But even those were constantly changed ending up with the creation of a Kingdom. Even before Kapodistrias' rule it was agreed, decided and constituted that a King would utterly follow as the ruler.
Apart from a small in number (but influential) educated elites with liberal ideals, the vast majority of the common folk revolted with the expectation of the creation of a neo-byzantine empire, with a king as its ruler.
Eg according to Theodoros Kolokotronis, the commander-in-chief of the Greek Revolution:
"OUR KING (Constantine XI Palaiologos) was killed and never surrendered to the Turks, he never signed a treaty with them"
Aristides Hatzis, "The Noblest Cause: The 1821 Greek War of Independence", p.p. 112
For the first 100 years of the existence of the Greek state, the Greeks in their vast majority were pro-monarchists. That started to gradually change only after the "ethnikos dixasmos", the "Minor Asia catastrophe" and the influx of the mostly anti-monarchist newcomers from Anatolia and Eastern Thrace who blamed and felt betrayed mainly by the monarchy. The so called "old Greece" (the borders until the Balkan wars) even until a few decades ago was to a very large extent passionately pro-monarchist.

I lived in Greece for couple years and I have to say that modern Greeks are very interesting and unique people but also very complicated. I think they are stubborn rebels by nature. Its hard for them to kneel to a king or any other foreign power like EU, NATO etc. And they will not do it even if that is against their interests and comes with a cost for their lives and their future. Sometimes I was thinking how is possible for this nation to be under Ottoman occupation and maybe thats the awnser why after that they are so proud and rebellious even though their country is not an example of how to run a modern country properly. They have so much corruption but at the same time their so proud for their country and their customs. They fight over anything with each other (they love to hate each other actually, its like their national hobby) but they can suddenly become one body when a foreigner will attack them. The majority of Greek people are against the Royals even though their politicians are very corrupted. Constantine made just 2 mistakes, he rejected the leftish elected government of Papandreou and a bit later he didn't do anything to stop the military Junta... and Greeks will never forgive him for these 2 mistakes because that resulted 7 years of dictatorship and the loss of half Cyprus by the Turks.

The government officials in place from the referendum of 1974 up until now avoid the matter almost at all costs. Are they afraid of the existence of royalists? They shouldn't be, in my view. Monarchy may not be in our DNA, especially since we are the first to establish Democracy, but it is still part of our history.
