And we have to keep showing up, even if we are rebuffed, scorned, or ignored. You can fall to your knees and tear out your hair. Or you can shrug it off, and return to your chief task of discerning what’s inside your control and what isn’t, then focus all your energy on making the right choices in regards to what’s yours to decide. Set your focus on these essential leadership qualities that come to us from the ancient Stoics.

    I must take command.
    My father died 8 months ago and the siblings responsible for his burial have done nothing about it. His remains are on a bedroom closet shelf. No headstone. No grave to visit. I must step in and take over out of respect for his memory.

    I didn't feel any negative reaction when you mentioned Trump or Obama, was just listening to your examples and trying to gain whatever knowledge or insight I could from them. There are good and bad lessons to be learned from any administration. Wasn't until you mentioned people having a negative reaction that my mind went there. I did roll my eyes when you mentioned Belichick though :D

    Currently I have difficulty calming myself for extended periods of time. I do my best learning in listening mode. I do choose books for the purpose of learning though. I choose fiction to relax (if I can) and to observe an author’s writing style. I’ve come to admire brevity: the most illustrated in the fewest words.

    Lead from the front. Never make a subordinate do something you wouldn’t do or haven’t done. Take responsibility for every mistake even if it wasn’t your fault. Never sell out the guys under you. Listen to concerns. Practice what you preach. Be friendly but don’t be friends. Put your ego away. Even though you’re the “boss” consider yourself the lowest ranking person. Realize a great leader serves those under him. Show up first and leave last.

    • @fin1423
      @fin1423 3 года назад +9

      Of course not. Aurelius was like any of us - flawed. This is worsened when the context of the time is distorted.
      Think of it - an emperor some 2000 years ago. The fact that we can agree with Aurelius on much at all is commendable, really. Society has changed so much since the days of empire.
      That is not, of course, to ignore the systematic persecution of many under the Roman Empire. What I am suggesting is that we learn from all of Aurelius' life, good or bad, and continue to refine stoicism into an increasingly consistent state of virtue. Maybe one day we will get there.

      Indeed, as we've seen, there appears to be no evidence whatsoever that Marcus was actually responsible for the persecution of Christians. The weight of evidence, rather, suggests that he was, as Tertullian claims, a “protector” of Christians, and tried to prevent provincial authorities from persecuting them.

I thought I was very polite on my comment it was just a suggestion, but it's ok this confirms you are not the person I thought you were. Jose, you have to respect Ryan's opinion and move on. Keep in mind that Stoicism is rooted in debate and we are here to be better. You got to control your emotions and not let anyone control them for you. For me, Obama was a great communicator and awful leader where as Trump was a great leader and awful communicator. Study on friend and control your emotions.

    • @investradelearn

      @@Educatenotindoctrinate hi Jason, I came here to see his videos for Stoic information not to hear about his political views. Checkout my initial message, it was very polite and in my opinion it was a constructive criticism to his channel. Now look at his message and tell me if he was as polite as I was, calling me a snowflake, sorry to say this but this guys is a clown. At least this situation helped know who he really is, he is just making money of a philosophy that has been around for many years, there is nothing new he posts that is not written in the old books. Take my advice, if you really want to learn about Stoicism stop listening to this channel and read the old books, everything is there, there is no need for us to absorb Mr. Holiday's political views, we have enough with CNN. And FYI I'm from Venezuela so I really don't have any opinions on US politics, we have our own problem over there (and they are really big problems compared to the US). Cheers!

      @@investradelearn Politics is teaching me how to remain calm and effectively communicate while everyone around me is struggling to do so. Guess what, staying calm pisses people off... it's a win. Sticks and stones brother... Remember Epictetus was a slave who's master twisted his foot in a steel boot while Epictetus repeated "you are going to break it". Somethings are in your power like your emotions and somethings are not like Ryan's opinion. I agree that the snowflake comment was salty just as your comment on his video. How long and how much effort goes into the preperation of making a video? You just shit on his work so of course he will react. It is ok to have teeth in discourse after all this is where these great Philosophers started. Maybe Ryan's style isnt for you but could you get passed that to absorb the message? It is ok to bring old material to light, it is ok to earn a living doing so. Brother, regardless... you need to control your emotions and you both failed. Personalities and politics aside, did you learn anything? Sorry for the current state of Venezuela as I can clearly see politricks is a touchy topic but can you do better with how you reacted? Peace Brother, enjoy your journey.

    Discipline is overrated, discipline is the opposite of the second law of thermodynamics, ‘great’ leaders don’t have exceptional discipline, they just have exceptional drive, which does not necessarily mean they are great, and you sir, are biased, you don’t get to say who is ‘great’ and who is not, there is no such thing as absolute great or bad in this universe, everything is subjective.

    • @davlmt
      @davlmt 3 года назад

      You cannot live in this world without adopting ethics and judging what's good and bad according to them. You won't be right or wrong in the absolute, but will act according to your ethics. A completely relativist worldview can only render you powerless and ultimately will make you a instrument of suffering for yourself or other ppl with absolute certainty.
