When I was in 8th grade, I had a really cool science teacher. One day when we were taking a test he started filling balloons with hydrogen and sticking a match to them behind us.
Just would casually set off small hydrogen bombs while we were trying to take a test and we'd turn around and he'd just be like "what?"
    He did it 3 times.

In 7th grade, my science teacher was retiring. At the end of the school year, she decided to try an experiment. Mix this one tablet with water in a flask with a narrow opening. With a balloon, capture the hydrogen gas from the chemical reaction, then tie off the balloons. Since it was a class we did groups of 3, so we had 8 or 9 balloons. The teacher then took a lot match on the far end of a meter stick to light each balloon. For my next class I was against a wall. You could feel the wall shake for every balloon popped from the next room over. That said it was a temp wall dividing a large room into 2 smaller class rooms.

Okay.... Army infantry here, from 1992-1995, then cavalry scout from 1999-2000.
Yes, MRE bom-- er.... MRE BOOPS ( ;D ) were definitely a thing when I was in. Ideally, you would place the heating pack inside a 20 oz soda or water bottle, add some water, then put the lid of the bottle on tight. You would then either drop the bottle and vacate the area, or you would throw that s.o.b., because when it went off, your ear drums were gonna kick your ass.
True story: in 1994, I took part in a field training exercise where I got to play a civilian agitator for a week. At the end of the week, we decided to make a bunch of MRE boops in order to harass the unit that was training at the time. After everything was over, we still had plenty of boops left, so the following morning, we went to the top of the building we were in (downtown MOUT City, for those who've done it), and started setting and tossing boops over the side, just for the heck of it. I'd taken a 2 liter bottle, put two heaters inside, added water, and sealed the cap. At that point, someone asked me a question, and I got distracted for maybe 3 or 4 seconds. Another soldier shouted my name, and pointed hastily at the bottle I was holding by its neck, which had rapidly expanded to almost 3 times its size. In a panic, I underhand tossed it away, and it popped about ten feet from me. In the open air, on top of a roof, with no walls around.
It sounded and felt like I'd fired off a mortar right next to me (a sound I was intimately familiar with, so this isn't hyperbole). My ears rang for a week. The concussion was so surprising that I skittered back like a scared puppy and almost tripped over my own feet. As a close range distraction, they can be amazingly effective. So yes... merry pranksters we be, though not incredibly bright at times.
Gunpowder and Tabasco smoke diversions are a story for another day. :)

We had bought a bottle of 'The Bomb' (seen on First we feasts Hot Ones) instead of Tabasco.
One of my buddies had the genius idea that we should test it on ourselves before, so we knew that no permanent harm would come to her.
Long story short, we did not use the "The Stink Bomb" as we called it, on our CO, because we all threw up and had severe eye/mouth/nasal pains for 2 days after that.
It would not have been fair to her, since she was going on deployment the week after.

I feel like we need more cameras to get wider shots so we can see the reactions of the crew to everything more often.
There's something special about 2 grown men trying to fit folded heatpacks in a balloon to fill with tobasco knowing full well nothing good can come of it while a film crew cowers behind rudimentary safety that is making a shield out of their shirts and sunglasses.

Tobacco sauce uses the Tabasco chili pepper 🌶 in its production. This is a short and thin hot chili pepper 🌶 similar to the Asian and African varieties of Birds Eye Chili Pepper 🌶 at least in shape and size. The Asian Birds Eye is often sold Asian markets as the Thai Chili pepper 🌶 and the African version is known as Puri-Puri and is the main ingredient in Portuguese Puri-Puri sauce which is a key ingredient in Puri-Puri chicken, a popular dish both in Portugal and in former Portuguese colonies in Africa (and nearby countries like South Africa). Crystal Hot sauce, the other well known Louisiana hot sauce uses Cayenne Peppers 🌶. As does Frank’s Red Hot and Texas Pete (not made in Texas but in North Carolina).

If you get gallium and aluminum and mix them, the gallium allows aluminum to react with water making hydrogen and aluminum oxide, this is a very efficient process and you recover the gallium, so you just need to use new aluminum metal.

You take a empty water bottle and the cut open the heat and dump the contents of the heater into the water bottle.
You then add the hot sauce into the bottle and then put the cap back on.

Place packet in balloon, put hot sauce in plastic water bottle, slightly inflate balloon, place balloon over mouth of water bottle, over turn water bottle allowing hot sauce to contact packet within balloon, quickly tie balloon, wait for rupture. Adjust air added to balloon as needed for volume of liquid and rupture point of balloon. Brought to you by the USMC.

Always thought the MRE heater/ Tabasco connection was that soldiers used the little Tabasco bottle that was included in some rations´ accessory packets as a pressure vessel/ frag hull for the reactive mix.
Seems like the method you showed is less likely to have a bad outcome, though.

The Tabasco bottles that came with the MREs while I was in were incredibly small, not large enough to effectively load and set off. If one were able to, though, I imagine the plastic cap would give way before the bottle did, but I've no way to know.

I'm just perplexed by the "Modern MRE heaters no longer use water or produce hydrogen" line because all the way through OSUT this last year our MREs still had water heaters, and it's the same thing at drill as recent as last month even. Whatever these "modern" waterless heaters are, they certainly aren't actually being used by the military - at least not in the MREs we got at Fort Benning nor at my unit in Pennsylvania National Guard.
