It was almost like James Rolfe's reason for not wanting to watch the 2016 "fan film" really resonated and people decided to act on that and look at where it got us!
I really dug the film. My largest critique is that the whole movie was predicated on the idea that Ray didn't believe Egon about Gozer coming back. Egon and Rey felt inseparable in the latter films and it seemed way out of character. Other then that a solid, fun watch with great new characters and a wonderful way to continue the franchise.
Besides if Egon mentioned Gozer, I could see Ray subconsciously want to believe him. Almost gotten killed 3 times and help bringing stay puft into existence would create so e mental hangups
@@OneSixthShape True that. if Egon kept becoming more and more paranoid, as the film tells us, it's easy to imagine a point where Ray would say "you're my friend, but dude come on". It was very well written, IMO.

It should have ended with Janine answering a call at the Firehouse with the line "Hello Ghostbusters. That's right, we're back again." cut to the new crew returning in the Ecto-1 as the Ghostbusters theme starts up.
I'd say Tron: Legacy deserves a mention among these torch-passing films. I dare even say, it successfully managed to have Jeff Bridges' character go through what The Last Jedi tried but failed to pull off with Luke Skywalker.

I truly despise the 'passing the torch' trend. There's no torch to be passed, there is a beginning and there is an end and that should be it. I don't care about newer generations, the original movies are still there and they aren't going away ever.
Remember when Patton Oswalt got extremely butthurt that James refused to review GB16? Well, I hope this positive review of Afterlife rubs more salt in that wound. XD
Paul Rudd is in the Leonardo DiCaprio Romeo and Juliet movie, where they maintain the original dialogue. I cannot believe somebody would legitimately you say that Paul Rudd is forever tied to a Halloween movie that I think five people saw
Dissapointed he watched it. He should've refused to watch it like the previous movie. One day the Franchise will be revived. But it wont be this decade it would seem.
I can only hope that nostalgia will not only be handled with more respect than it has in the past, but won't be the soul driving force behind movies. We need creativity and originality above All Else.
Thank u for answering our requests. It became just as honorable to see your review of this movie. I remembered all of reactions of every scene from the audience that day.
I thought GAL was EXCELLENTLY done. I'm not even a big Ghostbusters fan and even I teared up when the original 3 showed up. I had full tears when Egon showed up to help Phoebe all Dragon Ball Z style 😂, and of course the hug at the end. MacKenzie Grace was AMAZING, and was incredible as the granddaughter. I can't imagine how a better and more respectful tribute could have been made ♥
This movie was a fantastic send off for Harold Ramis not only the end of the movie but also in the heroic but also tragic way in which the charactor of Egon was depicted
For me, this is it right there... Ghostbuster 3 was touching, funny, amazing to watch... a lesson for all the studios that failed to make nostalgia a solid hit for the next generation.
It's always such a joy to be a part of your perspective on a movie regardless what plot it may have. Great choice of background music and as always, the editing is masterclass.
interesting thing to note: the actor who plays Egon's body is the guy who played Costa in Project X, that late 00s raunchy comedy about a guy throwing a party that gets wayyy too out of control. I kind of hope he comes back to play a character in the next film
I loved the movie! Considering how long it's been since the original, I felt that the movie was pretty much what it needed to be. A fun ride, and a heartfelt goodbye to Ramis.
I mean, wasn't 1990's "Star Trek Generations" exactly this, a "passing the torch" thing? I'm sure there are other examples of this being done in the past.
Generations isn't really a passing of the torch, because the TNG had been established for years by then, and DS9 had been going by then, while Voyager was on its way. Encounter at Farpoint's McCoy scene was more of a passing of the torch, because the TNG crew were being introduced to audiences then.
I'd argue that it didn't really pass the torch; the only interaction between the two casts was in the Captains, and by that point TNG had completed a 7 season run which had already included McCoy, Scotty and Spock in cameos. But there seemed to be a torch-passing moment for every classic Trek. McCoy in Encounter At Farpoint. Picard in Emissary. Quark in Caretaker. And I guess the reviled last episode of Enterprise, called These Are The Voyages, was a torch-passing back to the TNG cast.
I'm glad Afterlife was a departure tonally from the other movies, it makes it feel fresh as its own style of movie while still feeling in the spirit of Ghostbusters. It's pretty charming. A thing that I didn't understand much is how everyone but Grooberson seemingly never know ghosts existed or have seen anything about the Ghostbusters in the 30 years since, in the age of RUclips/TikTok where it's easy to go into a rabbit hole of history & cover ups & conspiracy videos? Baffling logic, but still a fun movie!
Maybe the Scream movies can "pass the torch" where Sidney has a son where it goes to him like how Egon's daughter from the Ghostbusters movies has it handed to her.
Always great commentary on media/entertainment and awesome points on passing the touch movies/shows. Been watching since I was 15 and I'll keep watching now
I loved it too….despite what a lot of internet people said about it. Been a Ghostbusters fan since the OG movie and the premiere of the animated series. The ending had me sobbing….it hit a little too close to home after losing my Dad back in April. This movie has a lot of heart to it and I’m excited to see where future sequels might go.
To be honest? I have not watched the movie, but I have seen the clip where the CGI appearance of Harold Ramis makes an appearance. Having him not talk, yet standing shoulder to shoulder with his co-stars makes the scene far more powerful while drop kicks everyone in the feels that much harder then it would to have heard him speak.
Nice review, James. I, too, really enjoyed Afterlife for most of the same reasons you described. It knew how to honor the legacy of the older ones while also setting up a new collection of characters. And for the record, your review was much more enjoyable than what Tony did on Hack the Movies (i.e. he basically hated it with a passion). Just glad to know you really enjoyed it as much as all of us did.
I had been waiting to see this movie since it was announced. I'm too young to have seen the original films in theaters, so I was excited to catch this one on the big screen. I felt like I was eight years old again, the sound effects were also a great nostalgia trip for me. I just bought the movie on 4k last week and I can't wait to watch it again.
Thanks a ton James, I had passed this up and was never going to give it a chance, but thanks to you I just watched it and I thought it was awesome. 👍 That closing scene is absolute gold! 😊 😂 🤣
Loved the review and am pretty fond of afterlife. The only point against it for me is that I'd rather the main baddie been someone/thing else, someone/thing bigger and badder than Gozer with different minions. I think at that point it tipped slightly too far into a nostalgia fest for me.

Thank you for saying this so I didn't have too lol
I loved Aftlerife, new cast was great, old cameos were perfect, and the movie felt very small and human
I saw afterlife in a theater with great sound and I too was filled with ueforic nostalgia when Phoebe turned on the proton pack.
Incredible!
I dont cry too much but I started bawling when egon was hugging everyone
I saw this movie with my dad, and it was one of the rare times I ever saw him get emotional at a film.
I saw it yesterday. It was the best conclusion to the ghostbuster trilogy!
Waited for ages to hear your thoughts on this film, I really enjoyed it
Dissapointed he watched it. He should've refused to watch it like the previous movie.
One day the Franchise will be revived. But it wont be this decade it would seem.
@@enskje Well.. I guess it just wasn't for you. I enjoyed it.
@@enskje It wasn't all feminine trash like the last one and actually has the original characters
Can't wait for an extended release of Afterlife to be released.
James, you always know how to post a video when it’s needed most. Love all your work. Thank you for doing this James!
Saw it with my friend in theatres, absolutely fantastic film! I actually choked up quite a bit at the end when Egon Spengler appeared.
I can't imagine how a better and more respectful tribute could have been made ♥
James said something that I totally agree with that I didn't ever think about, nostalgia HAS become a genre in movies now
I got very sentimental with this movie…. so many tears of nostalgia and happiness ❤️❤️ its a great movie too
James looks & sounds just like I remember, it’s great!
As far as passing the torch films, I don't know what's my favorite but Maverick came to mind as one you didn't mention.
i loved watching Tony's hissy fit over this movie over on Hack the Movies
This movie was a fantastic send off for Harold Ramis not only the end of the movie but also in the heroic but also tragic way in which the charactor of Egon was depicted
I really enjoyed it. It had an 80s feel to it, like the Goonies mixed with Ghostbusters.
It's so strange that we finally have a GB trilogy!
Solid movie, it got a lot of hate for having the same story beats as the original at the end but it was nonetheless enjoyable. 7/10 sort of score
Normally I would have given it a 7/10. But I gave it a 8/10 for respecting us the viewers, the original material and not being woke.
Well, it got hate mainly for listening to the fans, since those critics were fully backing that 2016 crapfest.
@@boskostoybox "not being woke", hahahhahahah sensitive flakes when will you ever put the pipe down?
@@afa78djd🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
With a preteen girl as your main character, I’d say GB: Afterlife was very woke.
I felt as though Ghostbusters Afterlife was a low-key apology for the 2016 abomination.
I’ve been hearing the term “requel” being used lately (even in the new SCREAM), but I like your “fresh sequel” term much better.
I see it as more of a second reboot than a sequel.
The new scream was bad.
I've always called em "legacy sequels".
also "Rebooquel"
There is a new Scream?
RIP Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis
I’m happy to see Ghostbusters Afterlife gets your seal of approval!
Hey James, sorry to bring bad news but, ivan reitman director of ghostbusters has passed away at age of 75.
R.I.P ivan reitman
I mean, wasn't 1990's "Star Trek Generations" exactly this, a "passing the torch" thing?
I'm sure there are other examples of this being done in the past.
Transformers 1986 tried to so that between seasons 2 and 3.
lol Star Trek Generations definitely "did this" but also failed hard
i'll always remember that film as the "Captain Kirk Puts Dill in his Eggs" film
Generations isn't really a passing of the torch, because the TNG had been established for years by then, and DS9 had been going by then, while Voyager was on its way. Encounter at Farpoint's McCoy scene was more of a passing of the torch, because the TNG crew were being introduced to audiences then.
No. Generations was a excuse to put TNG on film. Kirk on it was the "gimmicky cover".
Great to see him FINALLY be able to review a TRUE Ghostbusters sequel. Love to see it!
Maybe the Scream movies can "pass the torch" where Sidney has a son where it goes to him like how Egon's daughter from the Ghostbusters movies has it handed to her.
the thing missing from Ghostbusters afterlife was Ghosts. I wish there were more in this film.
Always great commentary on media/entertainment and awesome points on passing the touch movies/shows. Been watching since I was 15 and I'll keep watching now
I knew the old crew was in the movie but I thought they would be a bigger part of the movie's plot vs just showing up towards the end
This movie was not that bad and actually I was enjoying it :)
Honestly, if I made this movie, I would’ve just called it Ghostbusters 3
Best quick passing the torch:
The rundown / welcome to the Jungle
Schwarzenegger to Dwayne Johnson "now its your turn"
I love how James completely took himself out of the remake, the 2016 version, this is a true sequel and it was pretty fun. Miss Harold Ramis,
That comb over is quite nostalgic.
Look who’s reviewing a Ghostbusters movie! I kid, l kid. Enjoyed the review!!
Well, for sure this is the ghostbuster movie we wanted, not the 2016 one!
Thanks a ton James, I had passed this up and was never going to give it a chance, but thanks to you I just watched it and I thought it was awesome. 👍
That closing scene is absolute gold! 😊 😂 🤣
James rocking a fro here
Loved the review and am pretty fond of afterlife. The only point against it for me is that I'd rather the main baddie been someone/thing else, someone/thing bigger and badder than Gozer with different minions. I think at that point it tipped slightly too far into a nostalgia fest for me.
