Yes, kue lapis is the traditional steamed cake made from rice flour, just like what you have in Malaysia. However, lapis kukus that you had is a more recent invention that essentially co-opts the name kue lapis. What you were really looking for was Indonesian lapis legit, known as spekkoek in Dutch. This cake resembles baumkuchen with its distinct layers. A variation, lapis Surabaya, features just three layers. Lapis legit is a festive staple in Indonesia, enjoyed during celebrations like Christmas, Lunar New Year, and Eid. You might think that history doesn’t matter, but understanding it enriches your culinary experience. We have noodle dishes worldwide, but we know they all trace their origins to China. The same goes for lapis legit, which originated from Indonesia, a product of both Dutch and Indonesian influences. During my visit to Sarawak, our local guide happily shared that kek lapis Sarawak (Sarawak layer cake) originated from Indonesian lapis legit. This occurred when Singapore banned layer cakes from Indonesia, prompting Sarawak to fill the gap in the market. By the way, please avoid saying “sikit manis,” as that’s Malaysian Malay; we don’t use that expression in Indonesian.
Thank you so much for the detailed answer. We had no clue the extent/depth of kue lapis! Thank you for your insights, it's so interesting to learn about it all especially that of Sarawak filling the need for it 😂 Thanks for the heads up on Sikit Manis, we are trying to learn both Indonesian and Malay, but don't quite have it down and get confused between them both. How would you say the expression in Indonesian? ☺️
I wouldn't say I pride myself on it, but it's just what I grew up eating and so make the comparison. I don't have a bias as you'll see if you watch our other videos in Indonesia. I don't care who stole what food, or where it originated, it really doesn't matter all too much in my honest opinion, have a good day☺️
@@DisappearforDays maybe it doesn't matter all too much for "uncultured" white people, but the origin of cuisine, art, fabric, etc means so much for Indonesian. If you know Malaysian & Singaporeans claim cendol for decades, CNA Insider is searching for the answer, turns out it's from Java, Indonesia, historically & archaeology proven. Many Indonesian cultures & cuisines are claimed by fellow countries, it's still unacceptable. I don't have any respect from white influencers just looking for followers like you.
Indonesian legit layer cake has once again gained a name at world level. CNN has released a new ranking, the most delicious cake category in the world. Of the 17 most popular cakes, Lapis Legit is number 4, after Pavlova (New Zealand), Swedish Prince Cake (Sweden) and Victoria Sponge (United Kingdom). Number 4 is new Lapis Legit (Indonesia). Indonesian have kue lapis & bolu lapis. Kue lapis is a traditional snack....made from a mixture of rice flour & tapioca flour,, coconut milk and steamed layer by layer. Usually sold per slice. Bolu Lapis is a very soft sponge cake. ..❤ The famous one is Bolu Lapis Surabaya... there are 3 layers of cake arranged, original color - chocolate - original. Can be sold per slice... there are also those sold per pan
@DisappearforDays Lapis Legit is a cake from Indonesia which is the result of the development of a cake from the Netherlands, namely SPEKKOEK. First developed in the Dutch colonial era. Legit layer is SPEKKOEK + original Indonesian spices. Lapis Legit is another type of bolu lapis Surabaya. Lapis legit is almost the same as bolu lapis Surabaya but the layers are thinner. There are many layers in the Lapis Legit.. For bolu lapis Surabaya only have 3 layers & softer. Lapis legit is more expensive because there is more effort involved in the cake making process. 10.26 is kue lapis (traditional snack) 12.04 is bolu lapis Surabaya. 14.00 is lapis legit
Yes, you are right Jacob. Kueh lapis in Malaysia is very different from Jawa. The kueh lapis in Malaysia is made from glutinous rice flour and coconut milk, and it is steamed, layer by layer, not baked in an oven.
I think I have told you about this, after my mom passed away in Jakarta, my dad married to a Javanese from Jakarta. My Indonesian stepmom is very good in making the kek lapis betawi. She will sometimes make more than thousand of the cinnamon spiced layered cake for Raya, even for Christmas and CNY. It's become her main side income in KL, now lives in PJ.
Oh wow, that's so interesting! I thought it had to be different, but I can never quite tell which is which 😂 You mentioned about your step mother, but not about her side gig of kue lapis! That's so cool, it must take so much time to make so many 😮
@DisappearforDays Yes, baking the kek lapis betawi is time consuming. At the beginning, she only used egg yolks for the cakes, and decades ago, she only charged RM20 per cake. Nowadays, she uses the whole egg white and yolk, as decades gone by and prices of ingredients have increased over time, she sells RM80 for each cake. Besides the original recipe and the ones with prunes or dried fruits, she also makes the layered cakes with chocolate, cheese, plum slice and in rainbow layers. 😀
We didn't go to Malang unfortunately as our visa ran out 😭 it gives us something to head back for though. Do you have recommendations of where to visit?
in jakarta, there is a lapis legit store named lapis legit anggrek at palmerah. they cook it fresh from the oven, and they sell small portion too. I always buy lapis legit from there. cause it's cheap, fresh and super delcious. you should try it , if you have time....🙂😁
