Is a Mk 7 Gti a better platform for all round performance than a Mk 6 R? The 4WD is a big one for me and I hear the older engine is more robust but certainly being drawn to the later model as its similarly priced. Looking for a long term daily to improve gradually and not end up regretting purchasing one or the other. Any input appreciated.
Each generation has it's pros and cons. Not sure where you heard of the older engine being "more robust", but the Mk 7 GTI can handle a lot - the third gen EA888 is a beast of an engine. I recently got into a Mk 7 R, and I can say it's definitely a different animal from the all FWD platforms - that AWD makes a massive difference in acceleration on slippery surfaces (tires are also very important here), also in handling. The FWD GTI is going to be a blast to drive and modify, as is the AWD R. The question for you is, do you want FWD or AWD?
@@jameshaulenbeek5931 Pretty sure AWD will win in this instance. If I can safely drive it faster that's a giant factor. I have heard that VW stuck with the older engine in the R as it was better able to reliably cope with the higher output over the '888 GTI. Best go for the 6 spd manual over the DSG I reckon.

The hpfp is not close to being maxed out. The stock lpfp and fuel pump controler is the limitation. The ea113 hpfp would need to be upgraded at that hp level.
Wrong and HPFP is the first to run out About 350 wheel is the limit Its well documented. Also its why Some people run Nostrum HPFP & MK7 R injectors like myself.
@alowlevelbot43 The MK6 GTI has a TSI engine that does need an HPFP upgrade. The FSI needs an HPFP upgrade to run anything bigger than the stock turbo. The Golf R has a different engine.
thought i needed a boss 600 kit for those power levels. what type of setup does the 600 kit open the doors for? is it overkill for a stock motor 450hp setup?
The turbo might be capable of making that much power, but the oem low pressure fuel pump limits the GTI to around 350 whp (same for the MK7). Also, the smaller turbo spools more quickly, and therefore the torque curve ramps up a few hundred rpms quicker, so the connecting rods become a concern.
