Brian. As they say "Take a break to stay on schedule." I dont go with a timer but I do take walking meetings, and find i have my best brainstorming while i am running or biking. If i am on a real roll, ill stay seated, but most of the time a short walk re-focuses me. Important to know sitting can negate activity. Not allowed to put a link here but google "prolonged sitting in the workplace and VicHealth" for a nice video and scientific review.
10k steps a day is a lot! good for you. Ive used almost all the wearable activity monitors and I find they are most helpful on my low days.. There is something in medical research called the hawthorne effect-- when we are observed we change (usually for the better).. I think reading may be one of the best vices out there.. thanks.
This concept dawned on me when I was in karate 10 years ago I don't go to a gym but use the world around me. Jogging to the store with a backpack. Bike trailer my children to town. Dips in chairs with armrests. This not only saves time integrating workouts with daily life but money on the gym memberships.
I love this! My Fitbit Flex makes me push for my 10,000 steps a day. At 61, my arthritis is better when I move. I do zumba and walk but with the Flex, I pick other ways to move more so I can hit that number. It's self-competitive & when those little lights start flashing I give myself a big YAY! I love knowing that small things count, too..like taking a quick dance break when a good song plays. My only vice? A lot of time reading, but then I get inspired by things, such as your videos!
I love your message! I shared this with my sister who then calculated that she has spent 5 years of her life in her commute to work, this made her even happier about the new job she just took that she can bike to!
Dr Mike, love your down-to-earth approach! In fact, you inspired me to stand while watching your video. And with a phone headset at work, it's easy to stand or pace while talking!
I think a standup desk, or one that could be adjusted to allow you to alternate between sitting and standing would fit the bill. Been meaning to get one myself. I think it would provide a couple of benefits - giving some variety in posture would be good from an ergonomic/circulation standpoint and you would also be probably more alert/focussed in a standing position. Great work Doc!
I'm an active commuter who normally walks or runs the 3 miles to work. Haven't used an escalator in over 2 years and avoid lifts where possible. I don't shout for my family. I go and speak to them
Yes. Agreed . I bike to my post office to check my mail because it is only 2 miles away ...instead of cranking 4 pistons up and down a hundred thousand times.
i love these videos :) lovely drawings and so informative! today i went to the gym for 90 minutes for strength conditioning and then did an hour tempo run :] feel great!
yes, i think so! i imagine that much of physicianship is a subset of science, and arguably the most important element of science is a robust (and possibly even reverent) appreciation for what is *not* known. ignorance, or more specifically awareness of it, can be a virtue. indeed, Socrates professed that the the only thing in the universe that he knew for sure was how much he didn't know...
I'm just sort of using logic and somethings i've heard to answer this but I think it has to do more with their metabolism and way of life than it has to do with "living longer" in the more human sense.
Push your shopping cart to the cart corral or, better yet, back to the front of the store. Not only will this make your day a little harder, it will remove you from the douche bag group of people who don't care that they block other people from using a parking space because they didn't want to walk another 50 feet after doing a one-mile tour of the Costco of Walmart aisles.

I love walking.. unfortunately modern days don't let you with time to spend with loved ones, witch make you want to try to save up as much as possible time... sometimes this ends up eating up time you drive a car it eats gas, gas cost money, money cost time, gas save time so it is a loop. a trap that keeps you taped :( for the record i love to drive... but not to work i do it because it's quicker it gives me 10 more minutes of sleep, witch gives me 10 more staying with my wife late at night, but the 10 minutes saved by the drive to work, cost money it's a short drive witch means i don't even get the chance to warm up the engine to get it to operating temperature, so it eats more fuel, so i need to put more gas, gas is money, money is time ... P.S. I walked to work this morning, main reason why pleople stop walking is not tehnology but the missuse of thenology, thenology evolved to make our work easyer industrial revolution is based on that makeing work easyer but what we did once that work was easyer was ... "AAA so the fizical work is easyer now i'll make him work faster... and pay him less" so man had to double the stress level just to keep up with the work level reduction the easyer it is to do your job the less you get paid and more is demanded of you, this is a wrong way to use tehnology...
in my previous job i had to walk every now and then. now i just sit around all day. I'm feeling a lot worse. also less productive and creative. It sucks, I try to walk whenever i get the chance but I think people are thinking like "dude has nothing to do" Sucks that society and cooporations dont take notice. what a lazy bunch we've become.
well a great idea to energize ourselves and make a happy environment with a more actual social life, then the fake digital social gamut, MAde me remember my old school days, Made me feel younger
Continuation: So for example mice & rabbits have a faster way of life so they will die sooner, have more sex in shorter periods of time, move more and metabolize faster I believe. Whilst elephants and turtles would do this differently not only due to their behaviour per say but also due to their biological clocks. hope you read this and hope it helped :P
Slower heart-rate maybe? Moving is important, but not moving fast constantly or working hard constantly. Stoats run around constantly (and hectically) and have an incredibly high heart-rate - they drop dead (literally) after only 1.5 years when their little over-worked heart fails.
"park further away in that spot reserved for people who want to live longer..." love it
Sounds like a partab speech !

Your voice is so soothing to listen to
Dr Mike, love your down-to-earth approach! In fact, you inspired me to stand while watching your video. And with a phone headset at work, it's easy to stand or pace while talking!
Love your message. So simple but makes so much sense. It's all about small changes. Sign us up! Tweak the week!
Dr. Evans, your videos and comforting tone of voice are very gratifying and inspiring. Thank you.
Great point....I always park far away from other folks. I enjoy the walk and also no one crashes or dents my car!!
I LOVE these videos Doctor. Thank you so much

I'm gonna get off a stop early tomorrow morning on my way to work. Thanks Dr. Mike :-)
Love it. I wonder what the (double) benefit would be if we all didnt yell to our family members -- but just went to speak to them.

Hey, Doc! :) I listen to you regularly, on CBC Radio. Thank you so much for setting us straight on the dangers of sitting too much! :-)
Thank you for sharing this with the world, its encouraged me to get my dog and go for a walk with him as soon as I finish this :)

I agree - Let's move and live longer!!!
Awesome video Dr. Evans, great message, and I must admit was really impressed by the animations. Can't wait to see some more vids!
Nouman you are out of my wheelhouse with that question. I dont know. (I like it when doctors say I dont know... am i unusual?)

YES! I once worked in a household where the only way to turn off the living room light was by asking “Alexa”, the bot!
So simple to move the body but we seem to have forgotten how to do it! Great clip to remind us how to MOVE!
Best thing i learned this summer!!! Thanks Doc :)
So much truth in this!
+Jenerous Soul sssssigh
yes I guess you're right
Another excellent message from Mike
This is good advice and worth listening to!
Absolutely.
Tweak it baby. Great video and easy initiative.
thats great Majid. Interesting that in a way walking breaks are built in to the average day of a Muslim. Too bad the Mosque wasn't farther away!?
Good idea, I really love to make my life harder this way!
I love this! Thank you.
I loved it and so true!

Love it! It's not "cutting just carbs",as any Irishman will tell u! It's walking to dig up ur potatoes.
I have the opposite of "sitting disease" and I have chronic foot pain.

Biking for commuting is not making your week harder, but more fun and cardio friendly.

good video but fucking annoying sound effects
+Dario Stefanutto It's basically a cartoon. Cartoons have sound effects
i think this video was total tripe. why make our day to day activities harder when they could be easier?
So you'll live longer !!!!
this is boring
