The fact that people are starting to compare Tag to Omega is really a testament to how much Tag has stepped up their game. I have the Reverse Panda Glassbox Carrera and just bought the 2024 Aquaracer 300 Green Dial just shown in the video. I'm 60 and 40-45 years ago Tag Heuer was my nose to the window brand... but by the time I had the money to start collecting watches they had already fallen into the mall watch dumpster. Very happy the quality of a number of their lines has come up to the point where they are worth lusting after and owning again.
Both fantastic, beautiful watches. I have a watch crush for Omega SMP as the most beautiful diver in the face of the earth but I have to admit the Tag is fantastic. I definitely have the black dial and bezel with that gorgeous blue seconds hand on my wish list. My favorite watch color is blue so of course that slot on my wish list belongs to the Omega SMP.
Thanks for the great comparison Brad! I've owned a couple of wave dial Seamasters but flipped them in favour of the Planet Ocean line now. I also have the outgoing Aquaracer GMT on rubber. I think Omega missed an opportunity to do a few quality of life improvements on the Seamaster when they released the green dial version. For me at least, I would have liked a slightly bigger crown and then some refinements made to the bracelet. It's well made, but a bit old fashioned looking for my tastes. A pop of colour on this particular Seamaster would have been welcomed too, I think Tag did a great job in this respect. The Seamaster will always be a desireable watch and hold its value better, but the Aquaracer has had a host of improvements and costs significantly less. Tough call!
Hi Brad, nobody has mentioned this but the hands on the Tag are much easier to read in the dark... I like them both, but would sleep easier at night with the Tag on my bedside cabinet and an extra $2,000 in the bank... I know that the Omega is better, but the law of diminishing returns suggests that it's not $2,000 better...
@@DanielDahl-i9p The movement is METAS rather than COSC certified for a start. It's beautifully finished, although we can't judge the Tag's Sellita without opening the case back. Generally, Omega seen as a higher level manufacturer than Tag, although either maker will supply you with a watch to last a lifetime. Perhaps I should flip your question: how is the Omega NOT better?
Why a better movement on the Omega? The Tag movement is also COSC certified, magnetic resistant, beats at a higher frequency and has 25 hours more power reserve... both movements/watches have 5 year warranties. The only real advantage that I see for the 8800 movement in the SMP is the Master Chronometer testing. But that really doesn't have much of a practical advantage in the real world.
Omega SMP 300 at retail here in Europe is over 6000€. The new Aquaracer is 3500€ so thats a 2500€+ difference. Maybe its worth the difference, maybe not, that depends on each person. For me its not worth the difference and I have that the omega movement has only 55 hr power reserve. The aquaracer has 80 hr power reserve beating at 28.800 bph, 47.5 lug to lug. Il wait half a year to 1 year and buy this TAG at 3000€ or under
Tag for me: better strap (tapered), better micro-adjustment (on the fly, w/o removing), shorter lug to lug, thinner, 30g lighter, longer power reserve (25 more than Omega’s), and do I need to say, cheaper? Omega slightly better colour and movement but not worth the premium unless you’re a Bond fan.
I own an older Aguaracer and a new Seamaster. I really do like the new Aquaracer except the stupid cyclops at the 6. If they had a no date or got rid of the cyclops, I’d probably pick one up.
The Omega definitely has the better bezel sound, the tag sounds a bit cheap and tinny. Plus the display caseback and coaxial escapement makes the Omega my choice
Man I’m not going to lie I think the Tag is nicer . Better bracelet Cosc certified so not much of a difference with movement. Way better power reserve. Nicer dial in my opinion . Thinner. Wears better. Omega has better bezel action but that’s it. Not really sure why you would choose the omega other than branding.
@@maitrehg it’s not much better. Cosc is good enough for 99.999% of people. 70 hour power reserve vs 55. Gauss rating is cool but not not as cool as having a nicer dial and bracelet
@@martina6212 You are wrong. A METAS certified in-house movement is meaningful to many more people than you think. A great movement is actually one of the reasons a watch costs so much. Power reserve means nothing when you have a rotation of several watches like me and so many other collectors.
I really like Tag and I have tried it couple of times. I think it is a great watch in that price point but the only thing to stop me to buy it is the bracelet which feels way too cheap. It is like a bracelet from a cheap cheap Seiko watch. I can’t get over it and allow me to buy this watch although I love everything else in this watch. I’m so sorry Tag. Please fix the bracelet and I will be first one to buy this great watch.
Lol wut? How many cheap, cheap Seiko bracelets have you handled? The bracelet on the Tag is nothing like those. Fully milled clasp with on-the-fly adjustment, solid links with screws and solid end links. Low end Seiko bracelets have none of those. The Tag bracelet is what you would expect at this price point.
@@Angry_Gnome Yes, I agree that on-the-fly adjustment is great. No Seiko bracelet has that for sure but I just would prefer more thick and rugged bracelet which would make this watch to my choice of high-end everyday tool watch. Don’t get me wrong. I really really like this watch but the bracelet is the part that unfortunately stop me to buy this watch. Omega is not an option for me since Tag is clearly more ”bang-for-the-buck”. This is just my personal opinion and I’m still happy to see how Tag is really coming with some great new releases. Personally I feel that I’m only one small bracelet update away to buy one 😊
Thicker and less power reserve… I think people forget a demagnetiser costs £10 😂 Sorry but the SMP is just not worth £2k more than the Aquaracer and that new dial is fire
@@maitrehgof course, I don’t have many watches but I can tell you for nothing my Selitta based Carrera Calibre 5 stops ticking faaaaar more than my Carrera Glassbox. Now I’m using an Apple Watch throughout my working day because that’s the tool I need for a rough environment so power reserve even for just one watch is still important, it may only be getting a couple of hours of wrist time a day. Back to the original point though, way better movement is a very broad statement, there’s thickness to take into account, accuracy is going to be very tight on both of them, heck my old Selitta movement is at +1 a day and that’s without the extra steps of COSC certification so they’re going to be close on accuracy, one is magnetic resistant sure but magnetism is an easy affliction to fix, so really it’s down to power reserve, thickness, additional complications(date, GMT for instance). Don’t take this as me bashing the SMP it’s an excellent piece, heck the bezel click is god tier but again the price Omega ask for the SMP is just too much and the same can and should be said of the Speedy too, Omega just hikes prices because people will take the hit and I just cannot support or justify that behaviour
