What is funny is the country music establishment turning their back on Johnny Cash around the middle 80's to early 90's, shunning his work with Rick Rubin for the American Recordings series, only to finally give rightful praise to Cash (after disowning him for so many years) right around when Cash's health was in rapid decline. They hail him as the number one icon of country music, when Johnny himself hated categorization. He's right. He has a foot in many genres, besides country music. In the broadest terms, he's a singer-songwriter like Woody Guthrie.

Well, I love his work during his time at Sun Records. I'm sure you have heard that stuff though. "Hey Porter", "Folsom Prison Blues", "I Walk The Line", etc. But I also liked his stuff with Columbia. His concept albums such as "Ride This Train". His prison albums are groundbreaking. "Live at Folsom Prison" and "Live at San Quentin" are highlights. His final work with Rick Rubin is fantastic, such as the "American Recordings" series. Are you wanting me to list specific songs or will this suffice?

People are essentially a product of their own time. As much as I have always respected JC, the country music of the late 80’s-early 90’s was simply superb. Having been born in 1964, I don’t get today’s music..nor do I really want to. It just doesn’t seem to have the same soul. But I have developed a deep appreciation for the classics I passed up in my youth. Peace!
I was born in '61 and grew up around country music. The junk from the late '70's onward was NOT "superb", unless your idea of "superb" music is taking the worst aspects of commercial rock and the worst aspects of commercial country, slapping them together, and selling it to clueless hipsters as country music. One good thing about life in the 21st-century is that young indie musicians have followed the music back to its roots and are performing real country music without sounding like they're trying to imitate the old stuff, in spite of the fact that the Nashville money machine continues to push its commercial shlock.

I was looking through it & the top 6 would be my top 6 but i couldn't put them in an order, they are all amazing. Cash would be my #1 though. It was great seeing Jimmy Rodgers in it he is often forgotten probably due to how long ago he died. As it said he was the Father of country music. I would have squeezed in Tom T somewhere.

I noticed that this CMT program excluded one of the biggest traditionalist Country stars in Nashville during the late 80's and early 90's, and that was RICKY VAN SHELTON. He was untouchable in talent and record sales. Columbia screwed Ricky too. It seems Nashville don't like people who tell it like it is. (insert middle finger here for Ricky).

To be fair (& accurate) it wasn't John Cash vs Music Row. That's not accurate. it was more like the Label (RCA, Columbia, Capital, Decca, Atlantic, etc.) Producers were told to, no matter what, make it radio friendly. That was rule #1 from New York or LA. They were following a formula for air time. The only way anyone got to try something they wanted to, if it didn't fall in the perimeters of what the producers wanted, then you were told an excuse why you couldn't or it wouldn't work on the record (for some reason) Waylon Jennings wanted more base drum on one of his songs and the producer said no! Waylon said " why the fuck not" he asked? The producer said "too much base will just roll around on the record, radio won't play the record with too much base. And the big one: that ain't country! They bossed every artist at the label, every Label was the same... more or less. Not just country music either, Nashville Tennessee cuts all types of music. Different genre, same treatment! If you think I'm exaggerating, look up what a non-performance clause is. And every artist on every Label has one!
