It's rare when a song can make you cry and you really can't explain it but this is a song that certainly tugs at the heartstrings. This rendition is the most beautiful I've ever heard.
It’s a mother’s lullaby
My sister swears I watched empire of the sun just to cry to this song as a young boy. Older now but still shed tears for this.
Beautiful...simply a perfect rendition of a classic lullaby.
It moves your heart...tears of all that is good and all that changes. Mother's love and how it grows as her child does.
There's actually a better version sung by Anthony Way: ruclips.net/video/keZzVlCokT8/видео.html
This takes me back to when I worked as a musician on the film 'Empire of the Sun'. Lovely singing, Cai! I am a Singing teacher and Welsh, this is what I try to achieve with all my trebles. Lovely focused tone, breath control, intonation, and musical phrasing.
that must have been a thrill, one of my favorite opening scenes, a great film
I too am pleased with Cai. When I first heard this beautiful, beautiful song, I don't know what happened exactly, but it DID bring a tear or two to my eye, and it put a monstrous lump in my throat very near the size of Jupiter. That is no joke -- Wales is the Land of Song, truly, and I love, with all my heart, the Welsh love of the voice!
I wish more people in this world could understand better just how musicians like Cai make this crazy, hectic, and sometimes all-around twisted world a better place, yes?
Oh, how very proud I am of him! I can't express it more. *tears in my eyes*
@@mmzddx96 beautifully put ❤️
Oh wow that movie was my introduction to this piece when I was a child and I have been in love with it ever since!
The music was wonderful in that film...fabulous job. I've listened to the soundtrack for 35 years! Thank you!
The final scene...I must have seen it 100 times and still, I cry.
The Welsh are known for their beautiful voices this young man and this choir are no exception. Loved this. Thank You for your performance.
Diolch yn fawr cariad..... ❤️
They truly are. They say a lot of Welsh went to Cork in Ireland who are also reknowned for their lilting musical accent and beautiful singing. I wonder is it true.
Irish, Italians and Kenyans are as well.
you know you have an amazing voice when you can make Welsh sound good ; )
From the beauty of the harp, to the double bass and violins coupled to the young man’s mastery of the lyrics he is voicing backed up by a capable choir, the mechanics of this magic are magnificent. The work involved to arrive at the finished product always amazes me as the musician works the instrument so delicately while the vocalist manipulates their talent through precise control to arrive at what amounts to a masterpiece. Having been involved in this field, so much happens to get here. Bravo to all. That was a delight to behold.
His pitch is stunning. So serene and absolutely beautifully sung.
After a very long frustrating, stressful and horrible day this child fills my soul with peace.
so beautiful I have tears streaming down my cheeks, a welsh lullaby, used to sing this to my babies no where near as good as this though you are doing our country proud young man diolch

I’ve been obsessed with this song since empire if the sun. It gives me chills anytime I hear it. Beautiful soprano voice absolutely lovely❤

My father's grandmother came from Merthyr Tydfil. I have her Welsh Bible. Perhaps the pull this song has on me is an ancestral memory rising to the surface.
Yup, same here. Porth, Swansea, Camarthen. Lots of Thomases too 😄
I've never understood why the Welsh have such beautiful singing voices. But, then, of course, their own spoken language is very musical.
I am a 55 year old man. The moment I heard your voice I began to weep tears of joy...I do not know why. That voice could heal our weary world. Thank you for affecting me so beautifully.

That is its original intention. It is a lullaby.

Beautiful, just beautiful. There is nothing so "pure" as a boy soprano!! I should know, I was head chorister of my prep school choir in 1958!! I was eleven!!

More mythical clap-trap! It's depressing to see the credit for such a talent being deflected away from the person who has that talent. This beautiful living being is the ultimate product of the tens of thousands of years of microscopically small advances made by the generation-on-generation evolution which has created the modern human being, with all its strengths and all its weaknesses, all its joy and all its sadness, all its goodness and all its evil. Let us rejoice in humanity, its reality and all its most magnificent qualities and achievements, the better to address its many failings.
I pity you for your betrayal of your own species. I detest ignorance and delusion, and wish each person who suffers from them a prompt and complete recovery.
Get well soon.

There is no doubt that the Welsh are blessed with beautiful voices. As an old lady now, I remember the Welsh Male Choir. Truly sweet, lovely music❤
One time I was at a kiosk along the Motorway. I told the sales lady, "I have never heard the English language spoken as beautifully as the way you speak it. It sounds like music." She said, "Oh, it's me Welsh accent."
HOW OLD IS OLD! YOU ARE AS YOUNG AS YOU FEEL SAYS I.
He has the most beautiful, pure voice ❤️ I have to say as well that There is nothing like a Welsh male voice choir. Listening to Treorchy male voice choir sing "Tydi a Roddaist" ( Thou gavest) always fills me with pride. It's very moving.
(In addition to Cai Thomas) Aled Jones; Stuart Burrows; Bryn Terfel. To name just a few.
So very beautiful! It is always such a delight to hear a boy soprano sing. Did this piece with my choir last Christmas. Brought back such fond memories.
Empire of the Sun. Hauntingly beautiful.
The Welsh really are good singers!
In the "Song of Patriotic Prejudice" Michael Flanders asserted that the Welshman "...sings far too loud, far too often, and flat..."
While some Welsh singers fall into those traps, This young man's voice is true and unwavering, spot-on intonation and pitch.
A fine performance.
I agree, but then I would - I'm Welsh. Pob hwyl i Cai i'r dyfodol.
I think it not that all Welsh people are good singers, it just that Welsh people who can sing, are appreciated, trained, and nurtured.

I had this song stuck in my head for 2 decades without knowing what it was, and when I finally heard it again it was like being struck by lightning and I broke down crying for no apparent reason. I've sure I've listened to it over a thousand times since then and I'm still overwhelmed every time I hear it. Have to add that while the focus tends to be on the singer, the lighting, recording, and filming in this video is superb, the people involved in the production should be very proud.

Are you Welsh lad?
@@geopez2999 Nope, I'm Dutch... but the Welsh, they really can sing!
Wow! I became familiar with this lullaby watching "Empire of the Sun". I didn't realize it was sung in the Welsh language having never heard the language spoken before (a beautiful language!). Hearing this young man sing this sounding like an angel along with the rest of the choir just sends chills through me. I was able to find the English translation, what a sweet, sweet lullaby any child would find magical. I am hoping I can find some sheet music so I can play the lovely tune on the piano, though I could never do it justice and play it even remotely well as this guy sings it.
Having been in the Drakensberg Boy's Choir School in South Africa myself and once upon a time also being a soprano, I am familiar with this kind of talent. There's no purer instrument than a properly developed unbroken boy's voice. This is a very fine example.
As a former member of the Maryland State Boychoir (and likewise a former soprano), I could not agree more.

Angels are just fiction, this is real.
and what one hopes they look like.
Who knows what Angels really sound like. For all we know they can be singing some African tribal songs.
Yes, pretty much. Was in my church boy choir and it was wonderful.
Absolutely, Angels of God, there is indeed no time like the present for such beauty and light brought to this earth, God has a plan and while I do not know what all that may entail, I strongly feel this young boy is part of it, Timing is everything.
This was the pure essence of beauty; the tragedy is that time marches on and wonderful boy sopranos voices soon change, and those ethereal high notes are lost. The gift is short in duration and that makes it more precious.
There's some dialogue in the film "Boychoir," about this exact thing.
Their is no tragedy within perfections realm.
To hold this exquisite essence but only for a time stays with one for lifetime.
We are part of the composition of orchestral genius at all times. Your grateful heart receives sublime joy when the vessel of life seeks to fill it's Soul with ingenuity's source steps linked to creation.
Be glad that the time when adults worked to preserve such voices (through castration of talented boy singers) is centuries past.

The hairs are standing up on the back of my neck! I love listening to the Welsh language, it sounds like singing.
I have heard many versions of this song, often by boy trebles, however, in my opinion this is by far the best.
Cai has the voice of an angel, but what's more is he truly feels the music he sings. It's not enough to just sing the notes and lyrics, the singer must put his soul into it. And Cai does just that. No matter that his voice will change, he has The Gift.
Added to his solo is a perfect accompaniment, strings and the harp are meant for this piece.

A parent’s song of protection and responsibility, Suo Gan, is a traditional Welsh lullaby, or “lull song”, from the title’s translation (suo = lull; gân = song).
Here are the lovely lyrics for Suo Gan, and hint: it’s pronounced something like, see-oh-gan, with the gan rhyming with can.
Suo Gân
Hush, my dear one,
Sleep serenely,
Now, my lovely
Slumber deep.
Mother rocks you,
Humming lowly,
Close your eyes now
Go to sleep.
Angels hover,
Ever nearer,
Looking on your
Smiling face.
I will hold you,
Close enfold you
Close your eyes now
Go to sleep.
Lovely darling,
I will guard you
Keep you from all
Woe and harm.
Slowly, gently,
I will rock you,
Resting sweetly,
On my arm.
May you slumber,
E’er so softly,
Dream of visions
Wondrous fair.
I will hold you,
Close enfold you.
Close your eyes now
Go to sleep.
Thank you!
Thank you.

One with you will not do wrong;
Goodbye, dear child,

Say goodbye, tonight, sleep,

Why are you now smiling,
Smile kindly at yourself?
Is it angels above, who smile,
You smile smilingly,
You smile back under a merger,
Silently at me?
