Pitch correction in vocal competitions is just as much of a cheat as performance-enhancing drugs in athletic competitions.

And she didn’t need auto-tune because she could definitely hit the notes correctly and she has excellent natural capabilities. They compromised her audition for the sake of the production damaging her chances of her performance. 😒

I realize some people think Fil is like the Grinch who stole Christmas with the autotune videos. It is impossible to go back to the ignorance of believing that performers we enjoy are singing with their natural voices. Once you hear it, you can't unhear. I don't think Fil is trying to spoil our enjoyment. I believe he is trying to educate us so that we can be astute listeners. If you like a song/singer/group and they use autotune, so what? I'd rather know the truth and be unashamed to admit that I still like what I'm hearing. These videos are far more than simply pointing out when a performer uses autotune. It is commentary on the state of the music industry and the juxtaposition of a truly talented musical artist vs. a glossy image that sells tickets.

      @beetlebob4675 2 года назад +5

It would be cheating if these competitions actually operated under a set of rules. Lol
I've seen local contests, regional contests, older tv contests, and there's no emotional backstory of the singers to emotionally impact the judges. The judges are totally impartial and detatched and focused on singing ability. It's purely about actual talent. The judges are usually professionals in their field, not necessarily celebrities who are guaranteed to draw an audience. It's about the actual contest and the actual contestants, and the potential careers they can garner from the experience.
These shows are purely for entertainment. I genuinely feel that they're shows built on the bones of how a competition show runs, but isn't actually one in practice, so the people running it can bend or totally break conventional choices in order to put on a good performance on television.
It's like they combined competition and reality TV, and we all know "reality tv" is heavily edited and scripted around adlibbing.

It also sounds heavily compressed, which is very common in current music. The sound levels of her voice seem unnaturally even and her voice is oddly thick, and this to me spells out that compression was heavily applied. The fact that autotuning is used at all says volumes about how far the industry has sunk. As far as shows like this are concerned, I can't stand them. It's all about how you look, not how you sound. How many amazing talents from years ago wouldn't have made it in today's market simply because they didn't have the look? Yes, appearance has always been a factor, but not in the way that it's the sole criteria. Small wonder I rarely find anything new that makes me want to hear it again.

Autotune is a great tool if used subtly. The issue I have with it and with music in general today is that it allows people that are not great singers, but have the right look, to compete with people who are great singers but don't have he right look. 15+ years ago I auditioned for Canadian Idol. I made it through 2 or 3 rounds of producers (there are many rounds before you see the actual judges) and was then told I was too good to be on the show.
I asked how it was possible to be too good for a show that is supposedly looking for the best singer in Canada. They said "this is a TV show. It's about the journey from good to great. You're already clearly a highly accomplished singer. No one wants to watch that...it's boring. Plus, I'm a TV producer...who am I to give you feedback on your singing when you're already excellent? It just won't work."
She was definitely right about that last part because during my audition she kept asking me to sing with an absolutely straight tone with no vibrato at all. Ever. That's impossible for a healthy voice! The amount of tension I would have to employ to stop all vibrato all the time would cause damage. She clearly had no knowledge of how singing works...

A few seasons back, American Idol had a sanitation worker who had never sung professionally OR publicly. The judges liked his "down-home", innocence so much, they put him through week after week. They gave him a complete makeover including a brand new smile, and continued to vote him through. He was a likeable guy, but I often wondered if someone was digitally enhancing his voice in order to keep him on week after week. (His back-story really resonated with the public), and he made it further than many contestants with better vocals. Thanks for opening my eyes and ears Fil!

And I just have to add, "BALLS!" for what you did on BGT, any musician who watches that can see- "Showmanship". They should have advanced you for that, alone. Showmanship IS a large part of "Performance". They just don't care- as you said, they are looking for people who fit the Narrative they wish to drive, or heartbreaking story they wish to promote.
Maybe if this girl had had even a tiny bit? It could have helped mask her performance even more- it was truly not good. And yeah, I heard, with absolute ease, where they let go of the Auto-tune, and was sure they did- still nice to see your confirmation.

I'm with you all the way, Fil! It's sad this has to be a "reality show" that's so heavily produced. It lacks the artistry and proper criticisms and true musicians deserve. The autotune effect adds insult to injury. Yes, helping someone along who has a rough or sad story seems noble, but it's patronizing and an insult to those who have worked hard to earn their skills. Not to mention, I'm an independent artist like you and wouldn't want to hand over control of my music and properties to them to dictate how I'll work and what I produce. If someone wants to consent to that and feels like it's a fair tradeoff to get fame and attention, perhaps it's okay. Greater transparency would be better...or a talent show more like what you or I would seek. ;)

It's not about singing, it's about the process of making records (or in this case, a TV program). There's a Dutch TV show called "Beste Zangers" where established artists sing to one another in a TV studio setting. I couldn't believe how badly they applied auto-tune on Floor Jansen's vocals, it ruined the whole show for me to be honest. I believe the editing was made for the youtube videos released after it was aired on TV, but I could be wrong. What a mess. These producers are doing the singers no favors at all by altering their performances like this. The singers are not improving their technique or learning how to refine their voices when a computer program can just "fix" any mistakes they make. Once the X Factor contracts are up, these singers (unless they're like Geri) probably won't have much to fall back on, as far as being professional vocalists. So they've just spent how many years doing something which they may love, but don't excel at doing, without the help of some computer programs. I love to sing. I love music. But I KNOW what I sound like. I have an acceptable voice, and I can sing on key, etc., but I'm no professional singer, and I never will be. Auto-Tune helps these young performers live and perpetuate a lie, and it isn't fair to them.

I believe in the Beth Hart rule in singing contests. You can't just make it as a singer. You have to be able to write and or play instruments. If you are a singer and can't play an instrument, you'll need help and help costs money and forces you to work with somebody else's idea. That's why so many winners just fade away. They don't want to pay for the help before their career takes off.
Beth Hart was a winning contestant on Star Search in 1993. She sang her original song Am I The One. It's still being sung by TV singing contestants around the world. She also plays the acoustic guitar, the acoustic bass and the keyboards. She is the top female blues singer now and a multi genre singer as well.

First time I saw Star Search it was for the competition winner and I thought, that's a nice voice. Then I switched to Gladys Knight singing Midnight Train to Georgia and there is a huge difference between a good voice and a great singer.

I have great appreciation for your analysis as I am a bit of an artistic obsessive myself.
I agree with you, one should - in my opinion - NEVER EVER use auto tune or pitch correction! Never!
And let us be clear, here . . . it comes back down to the same thing that it has always been for millennia! MONEY!
Publishers, producers, and studio heads (bulging ungulates thread-straing Armani suits with cigars hanging from oleaginous lower lips) don’t want to spend the thousands of dollars in the studio costs doing extra takes getting it right when they can simply pay one guy at a computer screen to merely flip switches and push sliders.
Imagine if Michelangelo had merely tapped some keys to generate a mold to print out and set on the floor into which he could simply pour a slurry of cement to give us the Pia’ta!
It’s Orwellian when you think about it. In the novel 1984 it was “Big Brother” that wrote novels for the (worker insect) people, not literary artists.
