This song is a perfect example of why I don't think Slipknot, or any band for that matter, can ever capture that IOWA feel again. That energy and beauty of barely controlled chaos actually put on tape. It can't be replicated.

No doubt nothing will touch Iowa. Ask the original drummer from papa roach. They played the album extremely loud and literally gave him a bout of Bell’s palsy. Sid from then on said this album melts faces.

@@515hiato I concur. I will always love Self-Titled as a close second to Iowa. It's just that Iowa is a lot more dark in tone which is my thing, while S/T is more chaotic, which is ALSO great. I just slightly prefer the darker side of the band. It's a damn shame they've never even come close to making as great of an album as the first 2 overall. They've had some amazing singles sprinkled throughout, and even a few that weren't singles, but the first 2 are the only ones I can listen to from start to finish without skipping multiple tracks. I think the only track on S/T I will normally skip is Scissors. That track is just all over the map and feels more like a jam session than a song. Otherwise, it's damn near a perfect album.

I got to see them in 2004 just before I graduated high school. I drove to the arena with 4 of my best friends. Unfortunately we couldn't get general admission tickets (mosh pit), and got stuck in the balcony. I wasn't happy with that and myself and multiple other fans ended up jumping from the balcony into the mosh pit below (~15 feet). I landed on someone, a friend of mine somehow landed in an empty wheelchair and her side was so bruised the next day.
We got absolutely destroyed at the concert. It was shortly after they released their 3rd album (the subliminal verses).
I used to watch this whole live show on VHS back then, lol! Dating myself a bit. I eventually got the DVD, which I still watch from time to time in my basement theater!
Great reaction! Everyone always recommends the 2009 Live Spit it Out, but my heart still lives with the original Spit it Out from this live performance video (the same one as Disasterpiece here).

Love this song. That ending breakdown is just chef's kiss. I recommend checking out the band "Avatar". They're great live and have such a crazy frontman.

The whole Disasterpieces dvd is amazing. Best live dvd ever. Surfacing, Heretic Anthem, Custer and AOV are a must. Plus you have to see them do Spit It Out live at Download 2009.

I got to see Slipknot in Florida at Ozzfest in 2001. It was probably the best concert I've been too. This was maybe a month before their Iowa album came out and they did a bunch of songs from it. It was our first time hearing these songs. It was so good.

First time ever going to a slipknot concert this past Thursday and they opened with this song.. I’ve never felt an adrenaline rush like I did when the concert started. Got sucked into the mosh pit and I was like “eh, fk it” and moshed for a bit 🤣🤣

Great i am glad that you listen and give it a try. Btw not just Joey passed out, also bassist Paul Gray tragicaly died on medication overdose in 2010 and percusionist Chris Fehn (that guy with long nose) was fired from the band in 2019. Now on the drums is Jay Weinberg, on the bass Alessandro Venturella and on percusion Michael Pfaff. Btw they can go heavy like this even these days. From two latest albums i recommend songs like Custer, Orphan or Nero Forte but if i would be you go from start, start with their debut album live shows or videoclips and continue to their newest albums so you get the idea of their progression.

Slipknot, Deftones, Lamb of God, Machinehead...among others, 8/18/2012, Somerset, WI. outdoors all day, 90 degrees, Slipknot somehow still blows the roof off the fkn place! Best live performance ive ever seen is TOOL by star distance far, but by galaxy far the most energy ive ever felt is Slipknot live!🙃

Yeah. Slipknot has matured a lot over the years and are probably better now than they were back in the Iowa days, but there's something gritty and fascinatingly hostile with their early music that they've lost over the years. As much as I love their recent music, Iowa will always be my favorite album. Probably because it fit perfectly with where I was at in life, personally, at the time of its release.
What's cool about the album is that, amidst all the angst and everything pumped up to 11 musically, you can still faintly hear the more intrinsic sound deep in the background that they would eventually bring to the forefront. They are so incredibly talented musicians even this early in their career, and while it would take a while for that to really blossom into something they dove deeper into, it's still an unmistakable part of the album.
That's one of the main reasons I love Gentle as much as I do. It's a very tightly-controlled but extremely menacing song. It's like a combination of what they were back then and what they would eventually become, in the best way possible.
Great reaction. It's always fun to see people appreciate early Slipknot. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it's a *damn fine* cup of tea if it's your thing.

I'm enjoying watching you react to this band that I've been listening to since Ozzfest'99 but can't wait to see you listen to more of their songs especially from their debut album Surfacing and Spit it Out live are awesome plus my personal favorite Prosthetics or Sic

Great reaction as always, it’s one of the heaviest slipknot songs. If you like this song you have to try “eyeless”.

I saw them 21/22 years ago at the Agora in Cleveland. So not hug arena or anything. Sid was doing flips off the balcony into the crowd. They were lighting each other on fire. It was pure chaos and amazing.

I must say thank you because this vid has me even more hyped up going to see their concert tomorrow. Oh also, Corey Taylor makes an appearance in Drugs by FIR if you ever decide to do that trilogy by them. 2 of my favorite Slipknot songs is Before I Forget, Wait & Bleed. Also, check out Stone Sour at some point, it's Corey's other band & they're pretty kickass too.
