We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a survivor of uterine cancer from the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in South Korea or Japan. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on RUclips. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and arranged for her to share eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. She becomes the song when she sings it and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. She is indeed akin to an addictive substance you can't live without. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear and it is important to note that, as these are _essential_ parts of any great music production. She took a breath or paused to emphasis the words not because she has to, she has supreme breath control. She often uses a pause as a stylistic choice. Basically she can do whatever she wants with her voice. Also I think she likes to be careful of her pronunciation when singing in English since her first langue is Korean.
It's interesting to see your reaction video on Sohyang's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" here. Your expertise in production certainly served as the backdrop of your response as you took note of the staging, arrangement, styling, and sound. Lol, the break in the phrase you didn't like, was by choice and it was in order to put more emphasis on it. Sohyang is a master arranger and one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet.
Yeah, Chris is clueless. ONE of his accomplishments so far was to found an a Capella group that has had numero uno Country recordings...Home Free. And he's founded about three other groups now that I know of, does some excellent arrangements which he performs himself, like his Take 5, with a twist. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, anyway, and he obviously knew she did that on purpose, he was just questioning that choice. And the break would make more sense at the end of the sentence, in pretty much every sense. You don't generally break up adjectives and nouns in a sentence, now do you, not in English anyway? :-/ As for best female vocalists on the planet, really, how many of them have you heard? I do agree she is VERY good though, outstanding even.

Sohyang is a virtuoso - everything she does is intentional. She has absolute breath control, perfect pitch, and the phrasing and enunciation are always to insure that the story she is telling is clear. She speaks four languages and English is not her native language. She lectures on music and voice at university. She does all of the arrangements for her stage performances: music, orchestra, chorus, lighting, and costumes. @@sherriechampion7979 Your friend just needs to watch more of So Hyang's live performances. He simply didn't take long enough to properly evaluate this performance. It is one of the best ever given on a live stage. Her breath break was a choice that is neither right nor wrong. It is where she "chose" to take a breath and there are no rules for that when you are dealing with a singer _and_ arranger as excellent as So Hyang. (In fact, that was the very first time I have seen that criticism of her and I have watched thousands of these reactions. Chris should not have said that and I see he tried to retract it near the end of the review.) So Hyang is fundamentally unequaled in the world and has been since about 2012 or so. David Foster puts her on _the_ highest level with Whitney, Celine and Mariah. Michael Bolton calls her a vocal "virtuoso." And I can't begin to count the vocal coaches and voice teachers who have done analyses who have said the same thing. She is the best female singer in the known world right now. And the major labels have all been after her to sign on the dotted line for quite a while now. But she doesn't want the Hollywood lifestyle because she is a serious Christian, so she refuses them all. A reaction video is exactly that, commenting as you listen. Often as you listen all the way through your opinion can change as you learn about that person's particular style and technique. I was 61 at that time, so I'd heard pretty much all of them. Her transitions between her vocal registers are utterly flawless, much like Brad Delp the singer from Boston. You simply cannot identify where she changes from chest to mixed to head voice. And her vocal tone and quality is utterly beautiful. She packs more emotional impact into a song that many singers manage to do in a lifetime. Of course, this is hyperbole but you see my point. Are you a robot? You're probably one of those people who think Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez are top vocalists. No disrespect to those singers but So Hyang is top 10 vocalist in the world and well respected by many music industry professionals. The break in the phrases is to show emphasis and emotion. Welcome to Sohyang's world. This is not a talent show. Its a contest for established popular Korean artists who get invited on the show to compete against each other. It is less about talent and more about popularity, although of course they are all good. It's an ongoing show, each Immortal Songs 2 show has a theme, this one was 'English Pop songs' and each artist picks a song and rearranges it. This is Sohyang's arrangement. She won this particular IS2 with highest audience vote. She has been on a few and always places in the top 3.
Watch more of her songs on youtube. The are no known suppliers of her recordings in th US. Get with your record label associates, and look into licensing her works. Based on reaction clips, there is a market

Sohyang is somewhat of a hidden gem outside of South Korea. She is an independent artist and cancer survivor and due to both her health and faith you won't ever find her on a large label. She spreads to countries outside of Korea mostly by RUclips reactions such as this, so it's more a case of stumbling across her, but once you do it's like a rabbit hole.
I felt that this reactor was a bit out of his depth in this review, despite his background. Did not pick up on many of the nuances and emotion of this exquisite performance and some of the comments seemed a bit odd. Glad he liked and generally appreciated her performance though. Just my honest opinion.
Good reaction. Sohyang in fluent in English but her phrasing is sometimes (not often) alien to American ears. By the way, calling Immortal Songs a "talent contest" is a little like calling the NFL a community sports league. Koreans treat music like pro sports. Top professionals duke it out on Immortal song. There's not really anything like it in the US. Take a look at the whole lineup for the "Michael Bolton Tribute" on Immortal Songs ruclips.net/video/yyYygQ3jN7k/видео.html. These guys are really good and have major label contracts. Sohyang won that day and it was a bit like the Ali / Frazier fight. Bolton was taken aback by what he saw and heard. Actually, Sohyang. is different from the others in that she has not signed with the labels that approached her. I bet she was the lowest paid performer on stage in the Bolton show. She prefers to sing live to audiences in churches, public events, the university where she.has taught, and in these TV shows. She does do some OSTs and a little studio work, but really not much that I have seen. In a world were artist talk the talk about not "selling out", Sohyang has walked the walk. She reaches people directly through her live performance.

As some others said, her break was an arrangement and style choice. She has superb breath control and certainly didn't run out of air at that point. Most all other professional vocal coaches do not find any fault with this. But you, a music producer does????? Yeah dude, he's had plenty of vocal coaches and did graduate from music college, for VOICE, one aspect, and founded a number one country acapella group, Home Free. Go listen, they are very good. He also founded 7th Ave Band, and has a couple of other groups he sings with, as well as plenty of solo work. Go look at his Take 5 rendition if you want an excellent example of that and some of his arranging. All that said your opinions are your own, so not arguing, just FYI. So Hyang is way above Home Free (who are gifted but not in the same ballpark as So Hyang). One can hear it as soon as she starts singing, she is one of the best vocalists in the world. He seems like a typical USA music guy without real knowledge of talent, that is why our collective musical talent, the ones we see and hear all of the time, is not nearly what it could be. Most of our greatest singers have way too hard a time making it because of people like this guy. There is not one human on our TV or radio with as much talent as her. And then you travel to Norway, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines to find the next best singers.

She is indeed a devoted christian singer and also a christian novelist in Korea. We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a survivor of uterine cancer from the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in South Korea or Japan.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on RUclips.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and arranged for her to share eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.)

In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and locking the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether she wants it or not, fame has overtaken her, backed up and run her over again!

So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

Oh, I just remembered, she has also had several fantasy novels published, as well as a theological treatise on the book of Revelation, and is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
Though she is less than 5' 4" and probably not even 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. She is indeed akin to an addictive substance you can't live without.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear and it is important to note that, as these are _essential_ parts of any great music production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

She took a breath or paused to emphasis the words not because she has to, she has supreme breath control. She often uses a pause as a stylistic choice. Basically she can do whatever she wants with her voice. Also I think she likes to be careful of her pronunciation when singing in English since her first langue is Korean.
It's interesting to see your reaction video on Sohyang's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" here. Your expertise in production certainly served as the backdrop of your response as you took note of the staging, arrangement, styling, and sound. Lol, the break in the phrase you didn't like, was by choice and it was in order to put more emphasis on it. Sohyang is a master arranger and one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet.
Yeah, Chris is clueless. ONE of his accomplishments so far was to found an a Capella group that has had numero uno Country recordings...Home Free. And he's founded about three other groups now that I know of, does some excellent arrangements which he performs himself, like his Take 5, with a twist. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, anyway, and he obviously knew she did that on purpose, he was just questioning that choice.
And the break would make more sense at the end of the sentence, in pretty much every sense. You don't generally break up adjectives and nouns in a sentence, now do you, not in English anyway? :-/

Sohyang is a virtuoso - everything she does is intentional. She has absolute breath control, perfect pitch, and the phrasing and enunciation are always to insure that the story she is telling is clear. She speaks four languages and English is not her native language. She lectures on music and voice at university. She does all of the arrangements for her stage performances: music, orchestra, chorus, lighting, and costumes. If you want to criticize her because you think that's your job, you have to make something up when you're talking about Sohyang. Don't believe me? Check her out.

@@sherriechampion7979 Your friend just needs to watch more of So Hyang's live performances. He simply didn't take long enough to properly evaluate this performance. It is one of the best ever given on a live stage. Her breath break was a choice that is neither right nor wrong. It is where she "chose" to take a breath and there are no rules for that when you are dealing with a singer _and_ arranger as excellent as So Hyang. (In fact, that was the very first time I have seen that criticism of her and I have watched thousands of these reactions. Chris should not have said that and I see he tried to retract it near the end of the review.)
So Hyang is fundamentally unequaled in the world and has been since about 2012 or so. David Foster puts her on _the_ highest level with Whitney, Celine and Mariah. Michael Bolton calls her a vocal "virtuoso." And I can't begin to count the vocal coaches and voice teachers who have done analyses who have said the same thing. She is the best female singer in the known world right now. And the major labels have all been after her to sign on the dotted line for quite a while now. But she doesn't want the Hollywood lifestyle because she is a serious Christian, so she refuses them all.

A reaction video is exactly that, commenting as you listen. Often as you listen all the way through your opinion can change as you learn about that person's particular style and technique. I was 61 at that time, so I'd heard pretty much all of them. Her transitions between her vocal registers are utterly flawless, much like Brad Delp the singer from Boston. You simply cannot identify where she changes from chest to mixed to head voice. And her vocal tone and quality is utterly beautiful. She packs more emotional impact into a song that many singers manage to do in a lifetime. Of course, this is hyperbole but you see my point. Are you a robot? You're probably one of those people who think Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez are top vocalists. No disrespect to those singers but So Hyang is top 10 vocalist in the world and well respected by many music industry professionals. The break in the phrases is to show emphasis and emotion. Why do people get so worked up over opinions. I can guarantee you she wouldn't. In that industry they can be pretty brutal at times. Simon Cowell makes a living at it (not my favorite person). Examples, is she the best throat singer, best fryer, does she sing opera, jazz, folk, rock, etc. better than anyone else? Is she the best beat boxer on Earth. Welcome to Sohyang's world. This is not a talent show. Its a contest for established popular Korean artists who get invited on the show to compete against each other. It is less about talent and more about popularity, although of course they are all good.
It's an ongoing show, each Immortal Songs 2 show has a theme, this one was 'English Pop songs' and each artist picks a song and rearranges it. This is Sohyang's arrangement. She won this particular IS2 with highest audience vote. She has been on a few and always places in the top 3.

Sohyang is somewhat of a hidden gem outside of South Korea. She is an independent artist and cancer survivor and due to both her health and faith you won't ever find her on a large label. She spreads to countries outside of Korea mostly by RUclips reactions such as this, so it's more a case of stumbling across her, but once you do it's like a rabbit hole.
I felt that this reactor was a bit out of his depth in this review, despite his background. Did not pick up on many of the nuances and emotion of this exquisite performance and some of the comments seemed a bit odd. Glad he liked and generally appreciated her performance though. Just my honest opinion.

Good reaction. Sohyang in fluent in English but her phrasing is sometimes (not often) alien to American ears. By the way, calling Immortal Songs a "talent contest" is a little like calling the NFL a community sports league. Koreans treat music like pro sports. Top professionals duke it out on Immortal song. There's not really anything like it in the US. Take a look at the whole lineup for the "Michael Bolton Tribute" on Immortal Songs ruclips.net/video/yyYygQ3jN7k/видео.html. These guys are really good and have major label contracts. Sohyang won that day and it was a bit like the Ali / Frazier fight. Bolton was taken aback by what he saw and heard. Actually, Sohyang. is different from the others in that she has not signed with the labels that approached her. I bet she was the lowest paid performer on stage in the Bolton show. She prefers to sing live to audiences in churches, public events, the university where she.has taught, and in these TV shows. She does do some OSTs and a little studio work, but really not much that I have seen. In a world were artist talk the talk about not "selling out", Sohyang has walked the walk. She reaches people directly through her live performance.

As some others said, her break was an arrangement and style choice. She has superb breath control and certainly didn't run out of air at that point. She has held notes/belts for several measures before without any strain.

Its true everyone is allowed an opinion its funny that a few other vocal coaches commented how much they loved the break in phrasing its to each his own I guess in my opinion the break was great just saying!

Hua Chenyu is the premiere artist from China. He is a must see. One song is not enough to truly appreciate his talents, so I developed these recommendations for you.
Most all other professional vocal coaches do not find any fault with this. But you, a music producer does????? Notice how many thumbs down you hav e and maybe you should go listen to some actual vocal coaches critique this same song. Sorry but it’s a no go for me from you.
Like someone else said, all of her breaks are her choice, and she is the best female vocalist on the planet.
Yeah dude, he's had plenty of vocal coaches and did graduate from music college, for VOICE, one aspect, and founded a number one country acapella group, Home Free. Go listen, they are very good. He also founded 7th Ave Band, and has a couple of other groups he sings with, as well as plenty of solo work. Go look at his Take 5 rendition if you want an excellent example of that and some of his arranging.
All that said your opinions are your own, so not arguing, just FYI. Arguing that his is wrong is kind of silly, though.
As for best female vocalist on the planet? She is very very good, but you should probably go listen to some of the better ones, like Janeckova or performers like this:

They would give her a run any day of the week, and the trebles in the group 5th Street aren't too shabby either, if you want a jazz example. I expect if you asked this singer if she thought she was the 'best on Earth', she would answer no. Almost guaranteed. A title like that doesn't even make any sense, actually. Cheers.

So Hyang is way above Home Free (who are gifted but not in the same ballpark as So Hyang). One can hear it as soon as she starts singing, she is one of the best vocalists in the world. He seems like a typical USA music guy without real knowledge of talent, that is why our collective musical talent, the ones we see and hear all of the time, is not nearly what it could be. Most of our greatest singers have way too hard a time making it because of people like this guy. There is not one human on our TV or radio with as much talent as her. And then you travel to Norway, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines to find the next best singers.
