  • Waakye is a Ghanaian dish of cooked rice and beans, commonly eaten for breakfast or lunch. However, others eat it for supper. Waakye is a popular street food in Ghana.
    The beans used are normally black-eyed peas, some use red or pinto beans.
    Ingredients:
    3 cups of Black eyed Beans
    4 sticks of sorghum leaves( waakye leaves)
    1 tsp Bicarbonate soda ( Baking soda)
    1 tbsp of salt
    4 cups of Jasmine Rice
    2 tbsp coconut oil
    5 cups of water

    This waakye is a must try, the authentic colour and texture is on point. I like your idea of taking the leaves off after adding the rice andvthe touch of coconut oil

    Looks absolutely delicious. Love the colour. Did you cook the beans for 15mins or 50 mins? Sorry that part wasn't clear for me as my beans usually take longer without pressure cooker.... thanks 😊

      I soaked the beans overnight so I cooked it for 15 minutes before adding the rice. Nowadays I soak it for only an hour or two, cook it for 20 minutes before adding the rice. Both methods works💞

    have tasted waakye just once and i loved it!!
    Since then have been looking for a way to try it again plus i use to think waakye is a Nigerian food made by the northerners😁 now I know better. Thanks for this.🙏🏻
