So sad to see Benjamin so frail in this interview. It still baffles me that so many people have no idea that he sang so many of the hits. The Cars were one of my first favorite bands growing up. The first album still holds it's own against the greatest albums of all time.
I read that Ben was the impetus behind this interview because he wanted to get together with his bandmates, whom he loved, one last time knowing his time was growing short. It breaks my heart to watch this, but his courage and love shine through. Ben is an inspiration on so many levels.
@@wavehead11 Yes.. Definitely a great voice and very good bass player. They say he also played guitar and drums. In his interviews, he was always a polite and friendly person.
I wish he did not have on the glasses. Would love to see his eyes one more time. They were probably jaundiced due to his pancreatic cancer. It's true--only the good die young.
This must be the saddest video on You Tube. The amazing Benjamin Orr, a mere shell of a man. And the great Ric Ocasek, now gone. I don't cry easily but when I saw Benjamin's face I lost it. What a waste of a legendary musician
This interview is a treasured artifact and it feels like being there with them. It's relaxed and free flowing and in the way they play off each other I get a glimpse of how they were as real friends. As Elliot said The Cars' music did matter.
For a man who lived the dream life of a huge rock star, blessed with above average looks & adored by countless beautiful women, it speaks volumes of Bens character & humility that he went on public T.V. & allowed the world to see what the ravages of cancer had done. Arranging this reunion was a classy last act. It's heartbreaking to see this once handsome man reduced to this; I couldn't help notice he looks like a cool Grandpa hanging out in the garage with his grandson's rock band. I've heard that pancreatic is one of the most painful & brutally swift cancers there is. The bravery he shows through the obvious pain he's feeling to be there; to be reunited with the friends who shared & lived their life's dream together . . . I can't continue. . .
This band was such a fundamental part of my youth. I was a Cars fanatic. In 9th grade (1983) there was a girl in my school who was also a Cars fanatic. We used to write Cars lyrics on paper and pass them to each other throughout the school day. I still listen to The Cars to this day. I have all their records on vinyl. Every time I listen to them I can’t help but to think of her. Deepest gratitude to The Cars for bringing me so much joy with their music. R.I.P. Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek. 🙏
I can relate. When I was 14, in 1980, we would hear My Best Friend's Girl and another song from The Cars first album on the radio, and I thought it was cool. But I didn't really become a Cars fanatic until I started smoking weed and swiped my older cousin's, who lived with me, new Candy-O album. It was an 8-track cassette, and my dad had just purchased a used car for me, a 1969 VW bug, that I was still too young to drive, so every morning before school for 2 months straight, I would sit in my car and crank up the Candy O album and smoke out on Gainesville Green Marijuana in a miniature corn cob pipe. This was in Florida. To say that it was a transcendental spiritual experience would not be an understatement. I will always remember, and cherish those glorious mornings. I was hooked. And then, as if that wasn't good enough, the Shake It Up album came out, and I seriously thought I had died and gone to heaven. I would lay on my bed in my room for hours and just listen to the eight track play over and over again. Pure bliss. High as a kite and loving life as a teenager. In the early '80s. And, of course, I have had other favorite bands as the years have gone on, but no 'favorite band' ever affected me in a positive way with their music like the Cars did. Pure Musical magic!!
that was awesome Donna, thank you. Hurts to see Ben in such poor shape, I won quite a few singing contests singing Cars songs, a fan since day 1. Heartbeat City will always be one of my favorite songs of all time. Such a unique band and hearing what a great guy Ben was in real life has made it even sadder.
Ben's thoughts at the very end of this really touched my heart. Talking about the experience of "The Cars" life and how much fun it was, and the friendships the band developed. It feels like he is removed from the reality of where he was in his life in the present. Love his perspective and his strength as a man.
Over the top-- I am with respect for Ben for submitting to this interview. What a find it would be if his last performance somehow surfaced- RIP Benjamin💙
Expectations are funny. I never thought Elliot and David would be the most talkative band members. Great to hear the recollections and early band history.
I love how Ric said that if he thought a song needed a really good voice he’d give it to Ben to sing. Ben truly had an amazing voice that I loved but I was just as enamoured of Ric’s quirky vocals.
When The Cars were in their prime I always enjoyed their hits. As time passed I have grown to enjoy their entire catalog. If you liked the Cars but don’t have all of their albums, you should do so. There are only 6 with the original line up. They are all top notch.
The Cars are one of a couple acts that I really just think I took for granted. Their music always felt eternal, like it had no beginning and no end. They were always there. I always loved their songs. Just recently I saw some videos for the first time and in so doing I learned about Benjamin Orr. I always thought Ric O. was the only singer. To see Ben singing so artfully and skillfully while playing bass blew me away. I fell in love with him. I’m a singer songwriter who plays rhythm guitar. I always admire bassists who also sing since it seems so counter-intuitive to me with voice holding down its melodic and punctuated rhythmic structure and bass holding down the entire house. It’s odd feeling such an affinity towards someone in videos. Chalk it up to the power of music. Pancreatic cancer took my oldest sister and my best cousin. I’m crying and saddened that I never knew Ben existed until this week and so long after his passing. As for the rest of the band, what a beautiful group of men without the macho displays of so many bands. They all seem so humble. Thank you all for your music.
Thank you for this. Finally watched the whole interview. I Love the Cars they will always be in my heart. Have Never seen Ben more beautiful than right here, A Class Act!! RIP Ben and Ric.
"The Cars" first album of 1978 brings back so many memories ! It was my Freshman year of High School and a guy named Kenny (also a Freshman) and his family had moved in to the house next to mine. I walked over to see him and he had just bought the Cars album...he's jamming to it and loved it as well. We bought tickets to see the The Cars playing at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago my very first concert...14 years old...I will never forget those great time. Thank You Bennie eleven letters. Rest in peace
I listened to this with my earbuds on (while cleaning the garage, lol) Even though I've seen it before, just listening made it easier to hear all the intricacies of things, and events they were talking about :) and also easier to not have to see Benjamin as he is here. But, it warms my heart knowing he had this nice get-together with his bandmates before he was gone. ❤ then, I watched and cranked the video of Take What You Want, to see super strong hot young Benjamin kicking and tossing his guitar pik🎸🔥😍🤪 as I'm sure he'd want us to remember him with a smile instead of tears.
Benjamin was so brave to do this interview. I cannot imagine how hard it was for him. I’m going to do what you did @jessiek5683 and watch my favorite videos and remember Benjamin owning the stage. ❤

Godspeed Ben and Ric... BTW,... was also privy to seeing this great band at the Rat in Kenmore Square more than once, before they became globally huge.... 😎👍
@@ppesco69Wow! Thanks for the reply. I know Ben used to live in Weston so it would make sense that he would come out to the Framingham area for shopping or entertainment. So sad and painful to watch this video😞😢but after a long while (months) since last September 2019 when I found out about this band I have come to and end and been in peace with my heart and soul to know that Ben was surrounded by friends and a beautiful lady who were there until he passed. Elliot looked amazing with his hat and long hair😍😍😍😍
Five likable, low-key guys reminiscing about a great run. Notice how democratic they were in the conversation. No one talked over anyone else. Ocasek didn’t feel a need to assert himself as leader. I didn’t realize how tight they were, how much they loved and respected each other. I remember buying that first album when it debuted. Great, great music. RIP Ben and Ric.
This is the second time I have watched the full video, and have had the same or similar response each time, i.e it is almost too painful, so full of emotion and impossible to speak a word even if I had wanted to, but I loved it. Above all for Ben, the beautiful, brilliant, self-effacing superstar, showing incredible courage, humility and affection for his brother Cars. And for those same wonderful, talented men, enfolding him as it were, talking warm-heartedly of their great times together. From Patricia H. not William H.

Remember the first time I heard the CARS... Freshman year '79/80HS, unbelievably stoned at a seniors apt. Lunch break!!! OMFG! It blew my mind. Love you guy's ❤️ Thank you so so much for your music 🎶 All these years,it helped!!!
It took me awhile to watch this. First Ben passed away, which just floored me, then Ric passed away not long after their induction into the HOF. Fell in love with this group in 1978 when I was in 10th grade. I've been jamming to them every since. I've worn out the cassette tapes(although I still have them 😁), and have every album and CD. There's hardly a time during the week I don't have them blaring out of my Sony speakers, especially "Bye Bye Love, and Night Spots". Love you guys, and most assuredly miss Ben and Ric. RIP fellas... See you in Heaven!
Ben needed to hear this. It was what he needed to take his mind off but also let him know he (and the band) had an impact. As a young man I was jealous of his looks...
Have LOVED these guys and their music since day 1. 40+ years later they're *STILL* one of the best bands with the best music!!! Was fortunate enough to see them live twice. '79 & '82
wow! i grew up listening to them on the east coast (eastern PA) in the 80's. i always liked the Cars. Ric was always very iconic to me. omg, like, Totally from LA, right? i never realized they were from Boston - always assumed an LA band. but actually, they were each very iconic as themselves in the Cars. i think my 1st memorable exposure to them was, of course "Moving in Stereo" from ft@rh movie (phoebe cates pool scene). i was hooked - by - the - sound! ♪♫♪ 🤯i've always been really drawn to their linguistics & inflections. i find myself listening to my old FAV's from then & i can't help but be totally amazed at them as a group & individually. the more i see & hear = the more i love them! i love watching them LIVE now to see how they held it all together for a decade & thrived! and i never realized Elliot is such a hunk! 😈currently i think the best live show is the Nov 29, 1978 Musikladen tv show. please, if anyone can suggest any others? Bye Bye Love! RIP Ben & Ric
One terrific band! I appreciate them much more now than I did back in the day. I was too busy being the stereotypical (H.S. Class of 85) brat metal head! Christ, we're all getting old but Ben & Rick aren't forgotten...
Elliott: Man I got tired of the first album cover… the big grinning face Ric: What about the sperm colored steering wheel? Elliott: That I didn’t get tired of. 🤣
I didn't initially like The Cars, but had a girlfriend who really dug 'em and got me into their sound. The tunes that finally won me over were Moving In Stereo, Dangerous Type and Cruiser. This interview is really special. Many positive memories of their experiences together.
I did vocals in a band and I remember hearing Candy o. They were amazing and it looked so simple to sing but it wasn't. Talented people make difficult things look so easy.
You know, in 59 years I'm beginning to see that there exists a love affair between truly gifted artists & their instrument of choice. Like, u feel lost & out of sorts sometimes when there's not one around to play. How you cannot see a guitar, ANY guitar, even missing strings and such, & not feel this overpowering urge to pick it up & play it, see what sounds you can make out of it. Ben played live right up until the very end (he left this video taping to catch a flight to Seattle to play a outdoor show, amazing dedication!); such was Bens love for the instrument(s) . . .
This band was so incredibly compelling to me by 1980. They redefined music in that they took synthesizers and excellent guitar work to new directions without any of the trappings of mid-70’s rock. They brought a new style into focus and no one could touch them in terms of really ballsy but classy music. This interview really gets in to the mystery they exuded. Ben was such an amazing singer, Elliot the best lead guitarist, and they had a definite sound that was no one else. The fact that they were influenced by VU and Soft Machine is interesting, because they definitely brought that legacy forward. Now that Ben and Ric are gone this interview is so fascinating.
I've been a Huge Fan of The Cars every since 1979 ,80 ✔ I first seen them in concert at Reunion Arena in Dallas ,Texas ,and I think they were the First Rock / Pop Band to ever play at the Arena ! They were Amazing ! Benjamin Orr was a Phenomenal Bassist and Vocalist .I play Bass myself and just today , I was playing along with The Cars on one of their concert videos from Houston ,Texas . They were Amazing !✔ RIP Benjamin and Ric .......
I love this interview, you can see the respect between the guys and while it's terribly sad to see the condition Ben is in, it was great he got to do this with his friends and bandmates before he left us.
The Cars was such a unique band! Because bands were either Classic rock or New Wave! And The Cars managed to stay in the middle of both! Very Awesome! God Bless! Ben! and Rick.
@@pauliescott that's right. I forgot Panorama. There were only two good songs on that album. I added it to one of my other Cars albums. I meant the first album, Candy-O, and Shake It Up were their best albums. Heartbeat city was good, but not awesome. In fact, I added the two Panorama songs to the end of Heartbeat City. (C.D.'s). So you were correct. But the self titled debut album, Candy-O, and Shake It Up are phenomenal works of musical brilliance. Every one of those musicians were geniuses. You can tell they were all extremely intelligent. And you can tell they really respected each other and got along well together also. I'm pretty sure psychedelic drugs aided into creativity as well. LOL
these guys are a huge part of my youth and love there style tone and the song writing just wish i would of got to see them live that would of been epic. anyway ill be a fan till im in the dirt.
Everyone should come together and request it. The fact that Ben did this interview being so sick speaks volumes of who he was. He wanted to be connected to his fans no matter what. ❤❤❤ This is why he did shows until almost the very end.

One of the Greatest Rock Band of All Time
Ben needed to hear this.
Incredible band with timeless music will live forever!
They talk around Ben like he's not there. Same with the cameraman. Sad.
i want more ben
wow! i grew up listening to them on the east coast (eastern PA) in the 80's. i always liked the Cars.
I miss this group so much...
Sad to see Ben like that, I miss his great voice. I saw the cars open for Cheap Trick in NYC. An awesome show for sure.
So hard to see Ben so sick; what an outstanding human ❤ rip
Lord, I hate to see Ben looking like that... I still love him and the rest of the band so much. A great part of my teen years.
Elliott: Man I got tired of the first album cover… the big grinning face
Ric: What about the sperm colored steering wheel?
Elliott: That I didn’t get tired of.
🤣
I love The Cars and I love Ben.Such a gorgeous man, especially in the video Bye Bye Love . Gone too soon.
What a great bunch of lads, so calm and positive, now I know why their music is so good.... timeless genius
Awesome music! Love the interview! RIP Ben and Rick
God always takes the sweet ones back first because he really enjoys their company......
SAUDADE BENJAMIN ORR , VOZ ÚNICA E MARCANTE
Benjamin Orr is alive in my parallel reality.Benjamin Orr está vivo en mi realidad.Benjamin Orr está vivo na minha realidade paralela.
5 geniuses and Love them Soo Much Forever!! I'm soo thankful for this❤ 🏁 🚗💨 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'s
Ben played live right up until the very end (he left this video taping to catch a flight to Seattle to play a outdoor show, amazing dedication!);
such was Bens love for the instrument(s) . . .
👏👏👏👍👌🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮
One of the best interviews and all the guys are so modest.
I liked the Cars being a part of the soundtrack of my life, growing up in the 80's. Now more than ever I appreciate and love their music.
The Cars are legendary and always will be for all time.
So sad seeing Ben in this....😔💔
I'm pausing this. I'll be back i need to listen a live version of "Drive". RIP Ben
They were Amazing !✔
RIP Benjamin and Ric .......
Thank you for posting. I enjoyed very much. At age 63. I will always "Let the Good Times Roll" . RIP Ben and Ric......
Love The Cars, very underrated
🙏🤍🤍⚘⚘R.I.P Benjamin Orr..and Rick Ocasek 🇧🇷🌎
Love and miss you Ben and Ric.
I love this interview, you can see the respect between the guys and while it's terribly sad to see the condition Ben is in, it was great he got to do this with his friends and bandmates before he left us.
(L to R): Elliott Easton, Greg Hawkes, Ric Ocasek, Ben Orr, David Robinson... rock on Ben and Ric!
The Cars was such a unique band! Because bands were either Classic rock or New Wave! And The Cars managed to stay in the middle of both! Very Awesome! God Bless! Ben! and Rick.
Man I fucking love the Cars.
First two Cars albums are perfect.
Correction, first three cars albums are perfect
@@davidoverstreet2875 i didn't care for Panorama
LOL
The cars will forever be the best new wave band American 🇺🇸 or English🏴
*One Word: Respect*
I love guys you are genius
these guys are a huge part of my youth and love there style tone and the song writing just wish i would of got to see them live that would of been epic. anyway ill be a fan till im in the dirt.
I never realized just how cool Elliot Easton really is.
In my opinion, Elliot is one of the most underrated guitarists of the 80’s or any decade after that…
I wish Rhino would release the full interview with all the questions & without the edits.
Agreed!
Everyone should come together and request it. The fact that Ben did this interview being so sick speaks volumes of who he was. He wanted to be connected to his fans no matter what. ❤❤❤ This is why he did shows until almost the very end.
.
Great interview. I loved these guys. Music and as men. RIP Ric and Ben.
I'm 52 and thought you all were an English band!
As a left hander Ive had an appreciation for EE for many yrs - I play a different type of music but I've always liked the Cars
Ben Orr’s voice really comes as British English to me
