- On November 29, 1978, The Cars continued promoting their debut album in Europe by scooting on over to Bremen, Germany, where they performed for the German television program, Musikladen. The concert was aired on June 7, 1979, and later released on DVD by Rhino Records on October 24, 2000 (just three weeks after Benjamin’s death).
**The first song, "Good Times Roll," has been trimmed out by RUclips for copyright reasons. I suspect this is because Rhino has uploaded that performance as the official live video for that song. It can be viewed here: • The Cars - Good Times ...

Thank you so much for posting this. Like several others, I remember watching this concert on pre-MTV video shows and, in searching for it again, was assuming that they had been on Rockpalast. It's a great set! Excellent blog entry as well.
Donna thanks for posting this outstanding band, definitely deserving of more acclaim
Yes, thank you, my beloved Cars, I’m drawn like a magnet to this I watch over and over!
Yer'a fucking great music writer!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Sometimes even when you're tired and hungover, whatev - one guy being 'on it' or nailing a good riff or just digging in a little harder because of it - can get THE WHOLE BAND ROLLING even better than usual!!!
@@stutzbearcat5624 Thank you so much -- glad you enjoyed it!
Some critics said the Cars had no energy because they always played the songs the same way, but frankly, I always thought of that as a positive. They were true artists who composed the songs the way they wanted them, and when they played them... that's how they were. I love that.
I agree, I hate when bands sound so different live, you don’t even recognize the songs
I have always marveled at how tight they were and managed to sound just like the record.
Rush was like that, and look at what they accomplished. They were incredibly polished live.
Yeah, we want to hear the songs just how we know them.
I’m not the biggest fan of too much improv…
I love The Cars, however, the most boring concert I ever went to. Second most boring concert? Rush.
fElliot Easton two hand tapping. Looks up. Looks at the crowd. On his face it says "hey M/F'ers, I got this" Badass, underrated and under appreciated guitarists. That whole band was Tight. So sad losing Ben the way it happened and then losing Ocasik. The Cars were my favorite band back in the day. They've never writtin' a shitty song.
Make America Great Again. Bring back The Cars from 1978.
YES :)
I’m all for time travel
Keyboard player earning his keep. Certainly were a well polished unit. Brilliant..
I always thought Ben had one of top voices in the pop rock arena.
John Wetton was about as good as Ben, and both bass players.
Benjamin Orr. Beautiful, talented, sweet. Every woman’s fantasy man. No one ever looked as good in leather as he did.
Elvis 1968.
Rutger Hauer's Rock Doggleganger (Rockleganger?)
Ben rocked black leather like Ric wished he could.
@@janetaldrich7747Ben was a true beauty, but Ric's look was iconic. When it was a true partnership, they were invincible.
I'm straight but he had something that made me want to be him. Some guys wanted to be superheros, The Fonz or whatever. He was so cool and or course he got the girls and had perfect hair.
THEY JUST DON'T MAKE CARS LIKE THESE ANYMORE.
❤️
well done
Benjamin Orr ❤️❤️
Yes, especially since the Benjamin Orr & the Ric Ocasek models have been permanently discontinued! 😭😭😭
RIP Ben Orr & Ric Ocasek
Damn I miss the 80s...these guys were a big part of the unique culture and sound. Love em..
Eliot Easton is the epitome of what a lead guitarist is.
I agree entirely; dynamic and interesting but still melodic and cohesive with the rest of the band.
Hes so good - concise and memorable but loyal to the song
His touch and go is phenomenal @andrewburgess6417
ELIOT ROCKS !!!
The word you're looking for is "tasty"😂
Can't get enough of Elliot Easton. His style of playing is brilliant.
The Cars had it all, GREAT look that matched a great sound. Quirky synth-driven pop songs…with GREAT leads. EE is criminally over-looked.
His look reminds me of one of the guys from Blondie
I agree, Elliot just rocks. Great to see him up close like this! This setlist is fabulous too.
Super under rated riff master
Eliott is basically the Power Pop James Burton. No one else played like him or worked the riffs and fills the same way. And his solos are always excellent.
I love Benjamin’s “Oh” face. He perfected the art of the resting “Oh” face.
Oh Lord, I love this band. Why can't we have anything like this now? RIP Ben and Ric
There so good I'm a guitarist and a Metal guy for the most part. But there first album is in my top five favorite records of all time. Every song on that record is just brilliant. Elliot Easton is so tasty....
Because a handful of people have a monopoly on the music industry.

2023, and I still thank God for this Band.
The Cars were trend setters ahead of their time. This was 78, and they looked and sounded 4 years ahead.
Absolutely bro, well said.
My first concert the Cars Central Park NYC 1979, I was 16 years old I'm still grownded.
😁
1978 is the best year for music. Joy Division, Blondie, ELO, ACDC, KISS, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Lynard Skynard,. I was 12. Every cent I saved went towards LP albums. The Cars immediately became my favorite at that age. Elliot's iconic guitar solos, Ric's lyrical genius, Hawk's rif's! Ben's bass, vocal tone and good looks, Post punk. American. Legends. Always fresh.
Journey, Rush, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Toto ....
😂KISS? YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS! THEIR WHOLE THING WAS DRESSING UP LIKE CARTOON CHARACTERS!😅
❤cheap trick were amazing, I love that band! so many great songs!😂
@@klausrain111 To each his own.
I was born in '71. I remember the AM radio playing most of the classic rock (I loved ELO, CCR. Lynyrd, etc) but I missed out on the live performances. I got there as soon as I could. I wish we could travel back in time. The late 70's (and early 90's imo ) music were the best times for me. I'm just lucky they recorded some of these on video. They don't make music like this anymore...
Elliot Easton's brief solos fit these songs so well. Incredible musician.
I was lucky. I got to watch the Cars play at a local club often (before they were famous). It was amazing standing right in front of the stage, dancing and taking it all in.
I worked at a gas station on the south shore of Boston. Someone came by and said hey, put up this advertisement and you can go see the bands for free at this club. The Ranch House in Marshfield MA.
Thanks Donna! Great show! I miss them! RIP Ben and Ric
Elliot Easton...is just a bad A$$ lead guitarist. Every little solo he does...is spot on.
Mos def one of the most underrated guitarists in rock-and-roll.
@@herk1952 Agreed bro!
Wish the camera would of focused on his solos better.
He's amazing! Definitely among my favourite 5 guitarists! 😀
YES!! Damn Elliot is so good. Definitely an unsung and underrated player!!
Every now and again,..Geeks are allowed to SHINE 🌞 and the most innovative things happen. 🎵🎵
One thing I really like about this recording is that the director either attended (and paid attention to) rehearsal, or just was more on-the-ball than other directors of The Cars’ early live performances. He was able to follow the right action; Elliot’s solos, highlighting Greg at the right moments, David’s fills, etc. So many other recordings like this totally miss crucial moments of interest.
A good example was Ben's kick. The camera went from Ric to Ben, and when they realized they were early, they waited a beat and went back to Ben to catch the kick.
Except the camera is zoomed in on EE’s left hand when all the action is with his right hand. It always drives me crazy when directors focus on the wrong hand!
Came here after watching a recent two-part long form interview with Easton. Man, bands in the 70s and 80s could PLAY. No gimmicks, no fakery, no excuses. Stand and deliver.
The keyboard sounds and the smug lead vocal stylings of Orr and Ocasek made them “New Wave,” but Easton’s perfect solos kept them a true-blue rock band.
Truly amazing.
90 s too. The Pearl Jam concerts were like revelations.
I always loved how Ben steps back when Elliot starts to play lead. Pure respect.❤
And when I see Benjamin I ask myself : " Am I really straight ? " What a beautiful man
He always was!!
@@erwinklawuttke5572 Yep. Its the great showmanship and looks together.
He knew how to play in a band!
Benjamin also stepped back for Greg’s solos. Such a gentleman! So classy! 🤩
Freakin Easton man. What a great guitar player
Truly one of the best bands to come out of America the songs being consistently good
No vamping and histrionics, no strutting and primping, no show boating and choreography -- just really well composed and performed songs nearly identical to the studio versions. It's like they are all in support of each other rather than a front man and the boys. This band is so unlike any other I've seen.
But once they lost Benny - all those things worked against them when playing live. And it gives me no joy to say so
They complement each other perfectly

David Robinson the perfect pocket drummer. Perfect timing, great feel ❤
Edit: good lord these guys were fantastic. Every one of them, Greg, Elliot, David, Ric,and Ben, all just phenomenal. I miss this band
He was in The Modern Lovers and DMZ
Very innovative, two guys capable of lead vocals, and Greg, David, and Elliott driving the engine of their sound! Phenomenal is correct!
@@drummer78 because of your comment I looked up The Modern Lovers. Then I remembered hearing them back in the day. David’s sound was obvious this time though. Good comment!
He stated that he was deathly ill with food poisoning for this show! You can't tell, that is for sure. ✨️💯✨️The Cars forever ❤
One of the best bands ever.
Absolutely the band that captured the sound of the 80’s in 1978!!!
My thought exactly. They could play Drive and it almost would not be out of place in this set.
Out of all the Genre's of music that there are, no other band incorporated as many of them into their music as the Cars! Not even Rush ( whom I love as well) . They were a truly one of a kind group. What other band has
Rock
Punk
Jazz
New Age
Country and blues flavors in their music? They had them all! Absolutely excellent !!!! All their albums are fantastic. A very, very talented and fun band. RIP , Rick and Ben.
I agree. back then nobody sounded like them they invented new wave! like the Ramones invented punk! there is no original music
no new 'scene' no new sound! music is boring!
Another underrated band. Glad you are here Peace
Im not sure the audience knew how lucky they truly were, I'm mean seeing the Cars in their prime!!
All the years I followed the CARS I never realized that Greg Hawkes could play guitar. What couldn't that dude play? The musicianship these five guys had just added to the onstage chemistry. Leave it to Donna to find this one. Not a bigger CARS fan on earth.
Arguably the best debut and follow-up albums. Crazy that they were considered "new wave" at the time. Now they sound simply like rock and roll.
Me and my mates were absolutely enthralled by this group circa 1980. The best of times!
greg hawks, much more than just a keyboardist !
incredible one of the best ever
Is it wrong that I could just watch Benjamin & Elliot clapping for about an hour? How did they make clapping sexy? I need that on a loop to send me to a dreamy cars sleep every night … ❤
Ben made everything sexy!
Believe it or not, some people just didn’t know what to make of them at the time. I became an instant fan when my oldest brother stuck the new 8 track of their debut album and said: Listen to this new band called “The Cars”! They were so unique. So original.
RIP Ben and RIC.
Me too!
I think their music was really ahead of its time. A lot of this music would fit in perfectly in the 2000-2010 time range, a bit of emo, pop sensibilities, plenty of new wave sound too.
Originals lots of jealousy
Yeesss!!
Way ahead of their time. Great songs, lyrics and instrumentation! They broke onto the scene when I was in High School & College and during my early Radio days, which I spun into an over 20 year career. The Cars one of my all-time favorite Bands. Scott at Big J Report....
Truly one of the best bands of all time. This band had it all.
Fantastic, truly an original sound that no other band had. Simply put The Cars were an amazing band and their stature will only grow. RIP Ben Orr and Ric Ocasek

The most reliable CARS ever made in the USA. Built to last. Great mileage. Quality fit and finish. Never goes out of style.
That is the best comment I’ve ever read about a band. Truer words have never been spoken.👍
i saw a recent interview with Elliot Easton where he explained coming up with his sound. how he added lots of classic country and rockabilly sound. now when i listen to these songs i can really hear those flavors.
Elliot and Greg both went to Berklee College of Music. Elliot said it helped him understand music and laid the foundation for his style.

What a brilliantly assembled band - Great song writing/arrangements, Elliott's kick ass guitar, Ben/Rick splitting lead vocal and backup duties with the band. 1978 was a great era and The Cars were top of the heap.

bought and just thinking wow this is ....? like nothing we ever heard! I was a hard rock and metal fan but we loved it! I still do.
This is what the cars were like in 78 but the crowds would go crazy! I know this was shot in studio but it's still fantastic.
God bless this camera/sound crew. What a priceless gem.
The 2 singers are so different but somehow The Cars have captured one sound! Amazing dudes!!
I think they sound the same as well
@@beholden1663 I can't understand how some people can't tell them apart. Ric Ocasek is quirky, more nasal, anxious, and he says, "That's right" a lot even when it's not in the lyrics. Sometimes he'll change the lyrics. Ben has a deeper voice more range and is smoother in his delivery, sing the lyrics like Ric wrote them.
No other band has ever come close to the sound of the Cars,,,, AMAZING!! ❤❤
These were GLORIOUS times!
I can see that when guys wanted to look like rockers and not wear athletic clothes all the time and listen to crappy hip hop lol
The Cars. Every member a top-notch musician. Together they created one of the tightest bands in new wave and rock history, with an unmistakeable sound all their own. Their consistent groove can make a metronome jealous. Incredible
I love that this all is played 100% live! Great find!
Elliot really shines live. He really had that classic rock tone nailed down on this track.
I love how he based his solos on chords as much as scales and never crowded notes in for no reason.
For sure! I’m working on Just What I Needed. We’re found a “weird” chord, just one that wouldn’t normally go in its place, and the solo hits that note a couple of times throughout just to tie it all together. I’m thinking I’ll be learning more of the Cars and Elliot’s solos.
Vastly underrated guitarist.
@@willwolfinger2770All great guitarists throughout modern Rock played the same way. Page, Brian May " It's not so much the scales, it's about playing your lead's along with the chords that are being played". You land your lead's on the root, the 3rd or the 5th, you can't go wrong. I'm finding that knowing the notes of the fretboard like the back of your hand, is key. Battle -Ends - And - Down -Goes - Charlie's - Father.. Familiar with that learning method ? 6 weeks and I was running the fretboard. An Englishman taught me that. Anyway, back to the show.
They were all exceptionally talented.
They all were great musicians, that made great music!!
The Cars......such a unique sound. Awesome. Benjamin brought the vocals 110% every performance. What a gem. No fluff. No bullshit. Just music. Their final interview together just months before Ben passed away was great.
The final interview was actually only weeks before Benjamin passed away. It was taped in late August of 2000; Benjamin passed away early October of 2000, less than a month after his 53rd birthday. 💔

Tight, raw and LIVE! Exactly how Live Performances should be. Man, what a great band they were.
What I wanna know is why did I have to wait my whole life to see this??? I've been a fan of the cars since around 87 when I was a kid. They never played these concerts on MTV or VH1. I NEVER knew how air tight they were as a live act, and I learned how to play half their stuff! I'm so in love with them again since RUclips. Thanks for posting this!!!
Rick love I was thinking the same thing I
had no idea until RUclips and especially this concert how good they were live.
The rights and costs to get a concert recorded in PAL for West German TV on to an NTSC broadcaster in North America would have been prohibitive.
I am 58 and never saw this. THANKS! Brings back a lot of memories.
By 87 they had became a different band in my opinion but alot of bands went more synth they still made good music but that guitar sound was gone for most part to all keyboards synthesizers
Mike Thomas
A lot of bands evolve (led Zeppelin, The Beatles, David Bowie, even Van Halen added keyboard and added Sammy Hagar) and it is sometimes called growth and adaptation ;p
As for The Cars, back in the day I was thrilled about there mid 80s metamorphosis although I didn't give them the chance they deserved. My loss :( because of You Tube, I saw the Hall of Fame induction ceremony and to say the least, I'm kind of hopeless over each one of them! Especially Benjamin! Now that I have been educated.. Each song is strong and can stand solo! I just had another a-ha moment... They ve managed to sneak a variety of genre fusions, "Everything You Say" really showcases Ben's vocals.. I guess.. what song doesn't ? But.. "Everything You Say" has a Johnny Cash vibe !
I've always loved Dave Robinson's drum sound!

Yes he carried a lot of the weight for the songs that people never realized from the records until they see the concert footage.
'Take What You Want'!!! The Cars...most grittiest, darkest, heaviest track ever recorded. The performance of this track...is fantastic. Elliot Easton's guitar solo is spectacular! A shame, how obscure this track is for most. My fav-o-rite rocking gem The Cars ever laid down. So cool to see the triple guitar attack, with Greg Hawkes leaving the keyboards to assist on this triple guitar assault. Don't get me wrong...I certainly appreciate Hawkes' contributions on keyboards on other tracks. Hawkes' keyboard contributions are part of the 'signature sound', of The Cars. Just nice to see him jamming with Elliot and Rick....and Ben. What a performance.

Oh yeah I got the time for this one always. Its just so damn clever the way he does his magical call and responds on songs in the lyrical to sound context. As a musician he and Elliot have been so major to me in the way they weave this musical tapestry on top of David and Bens groove to Ric's songs.
You feel like he challenged himself to see how many sounds he could create without missing a beat.
They hit their stride in this video, wish I'd seen it much sooner. Every Cars fan should see the video, and many other music enthusiasts should as well. Its an assessment of who they were, and their music. What a great treat, what great music.

I'm starting to think Ric was really influenced by Lou reed that's why he would always wear those glasses lol
What an amazing band. When they played live they gave you the Cars and nothing else. Precision, power and passion. It was basically we are here and we mean business. Everyone had their place in engine that was.
Well those leather pants and long hip coat are hot, in more ways than one, on our out-of-this-world Benjamin. The whole band was smoking hot, musically. I appreciate them more now than I did in real time, but there were distractions back then. They are sublime.

Did everyone notice that Elliot is doing finger tapping during his solo in Night Spots. It's at the 6:06 mark. This video was made in 1979, only a year after Van Halen's first album came out. Eddie Van Halen is seen as the father of the tapping technique but Elliot was doing it very early on. Elliot is not known as a shredder. He's greatly respected for his inventive, well crafted, melodic solos that perfectly fit each song. But make no mistake, Elliot was a highly technically capable player who studied at Berkelee in Boston. He's amazing.
EVH brought it back. Steve Hackett of Genesis was doing the finger tap in 1971
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I also love how Elliot gets into the music & had such passion; borh playing & singing. . A great guitarist.

14:33 Elliot Easton is THE SH!!!!!!T. So underrated. We all loved Ben Orr, and rightly so, but EE is a phenomenal guitarist and arranger. Who could write better solos for The Cars music? The answer is NO BODY.
I agree 100%. His solos were always PERFECT for the song, and usually melodic. His tone, technique & contributions to songwriting really encapsulated the bridge between 50s & 60s Rock'n'Roll, 70s 'Arena Rock', and late 70s New Wave. It takes a ton of talent to do that. BTW, if you haven't followed Easton's work since the Cars aslled it quits, you have to check out his work in "The Empty Hearts". Their debut album (released 2014) is fantastic...it's not the Cars, but it's brilliant power-pop/garage/rock'n'roll !
A W S O M E
I was in High School when this all came out in the late 70's and these songs dominated the radio.
Watching this makes me realize there was so much more talent to it than I knew then; Thank you !
Me too! I graduated in 79 and they blew me away after the disco era!
I blew them off at the time and I am only now appreciative of the great musicianship.
A W E & then S O M E
Indeed..they were so good on album 1.. side 2 was better than side 1
Glad to see they played the Cars in Stranger Things even though it seemed the show was spoofing fast times at ridgemont high
The Cars was Ric's and Ben's band but that sound was SO dependent on Elliott and Greg
I was a child when their first album came out and still love them!! RIP Benjamin and Rick! Do you ever notice that what they're wearing in these videos is still in style today??
Yes,it never goes out of style.
All the positive comments are spot on. I’m watching and wondering WTF is wrong with an audience that barely applauds.
Only disappointing thing about this . I would have been blown away myself. It was like they were playing at some Deadbeat Club.
Different decorum/etiquette in Europe vs US. They’re more deferential. Plus it was still early days, their debut album had yet to hit big in Europe as it did in the US, so they had some catching up to do. Also (someone correct me if I’m wrong) I understand the audience was made up of mostly industry people (i.e. not regular folks like you and me) who see this kind of stuff all the time so they’re not easily enthusiastic about it.
Well, at least the Musikladen audience wasn't misbehaving like the audience for Rock Goes to College! Nothing was thrown at Ben or any other band member!
thank you so much for uploading this! should honestly be in some rock n roll museum, great slice of history captured here
I hope you all realize how the universe somehow pulled these 5 guys together ( who were masters at their respective crafts), to form this literally ONE OF A KIND BAND👍🏻👍🏻
Wow thats so beautiful!
you got it Phil!!! a one of a kind band for sure. Miss Ben and Ric...
It really is a little miraculous. My favorite band and favorite bass player...
Bye Bye Love. So simple , so true . I always liked the power of those three words. And musically it’s quite possibly the best song ever.
And hanging in there. Ric was about 34 on that first record. Never knew he was a year younger than my father. Born in 44 man his peers were the British Invasion Era….I say this because it was pretty rare back then for someone to just keep plowing through in their 30’s and with a family. The Cars were like the hub in a wheel, all those spokes be it Rock,Metal, New Wave, Punk loved the Cars.
Here I am back again watching this excellent concert. It’s so good; I’m like that lady with the camera @8:20 lol stunned motionless by Benjamin 🥰
Saw the Cars Live Once, love their songs. But didn't realize Ben passed before Ric.
I also learned that Ben sang half the Songs, I've leaned so much in the past few days of watching Interviews and past Concerts. Now we have lost two Great Men and Musicians, But The Cars will Always Live On.
All these years later, two members gone, I still LOVE this band and their music. So timeless to me.
God, this is just gorgeous. All glories to The Cars. And Musikladen. Thank you
